Tundra Restaurant Review: Canadian Cuisine in Toronto

When it came to my recent stay at the Hilton in downtown Toronto, I must admit that my favorite part of the entire experience was dinner at their Tundra restaurant. At first glance, the Tundra restaurant appears to be a typical hotel lobby restaurant. However, in reality it is far from typical, and actually a high-end gourmet eatery. I must say that after speaking with the chef, I became very impressed with how they operate.

I was fortunate enough to try their latest menu before it was released to the public. I started with the mussel salad. This was a dish that just me in the right mood. It had a smoked onion soubise which had a very exquisite flavor. All was complemented with a beautiful riesling from the Niagara area. Fantastically refreshing.

This may come as a shocker to many of you, but I must admit that this was the first time I’ve ever tried bone marrow. From the first bite, I fell in love. It had all of the flavors I adore. It was served with a parsley caper salad which was nice and salty, a triple crunch mustard alongside a few pieces of toast. I truly couldn’t get enough and would return simply for this dish!

The third course was a roasted duck breast and house made wild rabbit sausage. This was served alongside turnip, radishes, grapes and braised celery. The favorite for me in this dish was the homemade sausage. I did appreciate the beautiful presentation with all of the colors as well.

Of course, to finish off such a grand meal, needed a grand dessert. Lucky for me, the chef had a beautifully presented dessert ready to go. It was a chocolate ganache accompanied, pistachio ice cream along with red jelly. It just looked beautiful, my favorite part was the ice cream.

You can really feel the love at the Tundra restaurant inside of the Toronto Hilton hotel. They go the extra mile whether their ingredients, service or just amazing food. Our server George took wonderful care of us and I really appreciate his efforts. Nothing better than amazing food and a smiling staff! It was a fantastic evening and I can highly recommend that you eat at Tundra in downtown Toronto!

Nota Bene Restaurant Review (Toronto, Canada)

There was an Italian restaurant in Toronto that I simply had to try. It kept coming up in the top restaurant lists of Toronto, the name is Nota Bene. When I arrived, the restaurant was completely full and stayed that way until 11pm. Off to a great start!

The chef prepared a tasting menu where all dishes were a complete surprise to me. The evening started off with a tray of amuse bouches. All looked divine, my favorite were the oysters.

I must mention Adley, who was the server that took care of me for the evening. He was fantastic and an excellent dinner host! Back to the meal, the next notable dish was the ceviche. This was not a typical ceviche because it had pieces of coconut in it. The coconut put a spin on a classic dish.

I was told that their ravioli is all made by hand. The producer makes it for all of the high-end restaurants in Toronto. The filling was slightly dry but the pasta itself was perfect.

The final course was venison and was superb. Not gamey at all! It was cooked to perfection, as you can see. The venison’s little friend, a crispy potato, was also delicious. The dish reminded me of a Thanksgiving meal and warmed my mind, body and soul.

Up next were the desserts. First was a citrus sorbet that served to cleanse my palate. Very refreshing. The finisher was a chocolate lava cake. This was one of the moistest chocolate cakes ever. They served with a nice port wine and it was definitely a match made heaven. The best wine of the evening!

I couldn’t resist ordering a final cocktail at the end. Pro Tip: order a “Doctor’s Orders.”

Nota Bene in downtown Toronto offers a very quality product. The staff clearly love what they do and it showed in the service and food. This is one of the major differences between good and great restaurants. I must say that I enjoyed myself and I’m sure that you will too, when you visit Nota Bene in Toronto!

My favorite hotel during my recent trip to Toronto has to be the Fairmont Royal York located just across from union station. The hotel is right in the middle of the action. The Royal York is actually full of history and first opened in 1929. Definitely a landmark in Toronto!

After I valeted my car and checked-in, it was up to the 10th floor to see the room. The room was medium sized and had lots of quality components. The bedding was super comfortable! The bathroom had a marble counter top and was very bright. The hotel welcomed me with a few gifts! I liked the tower of desserts, cheese, berries and meat. I was hungry so I gobbled it all up, oops.

After finishing up some hors d’oeuvres upstairs at the Fairmont Gold lounge, I came down to experience a meal. For the main course, I went with the 16oz bone-in ribeye! The steak was a work of art. You can see that it was cooked perfectly. When I order a steak, I don’t usually consider what’s coming with it. After checking in, I proceeded up to the 31st floor to see my room. Upon entering the room, I was very pleased to see the quality. A great desk, comfortable chair and of course a beautiful bed. The room is huge and feels very spacious. The view is overlooking the historical Osgoode Hall which was built in 1829. My room is also just one floor below the Hilton club lounge. Lucky for me, there is a private stairwell from my floor to the 32nd floor which gave me quick access to the lounge.

After getting all settled in, I decided to go check out the rest of the hotel. The first stop on my tour was the gym and pool area. Neither the gym or pool areas were monitored by staff, simply enter your key card and you’re in. The gym was large with lots of equipment. There were no shortage of treadmills and the gym was a great place to workout. They have a heated outdoor pool on the roof which can even be used even in the wintertime! That being said, I have to admit that the locker rooms could use an update.

Of course with the executive lounge being only a floor above, I spent some time there. The executive lounge is large and offers tons of seating. Refreshments and food are quite limited and there is a fee for alcoholic beverages.

Ki Restaurant: Lovely Japanese Cuisine in Toronto

Regardless of where I travel around the world, I’m almost never disappointed when it comes to Japanese cuisine. While in Toronto and staying in the financial district, I had the opportunity to enjoy a dinner at the Ki restaurant. When I arrived, I entered an incredibly full bar and dining room. The staff assured me that this was a slow night, but it was hard to believe with so many people!

Our server was very energetic and knowledgeable about what was being served. I started off the meal with an amuse bouche that looked gorgeous. Following shortly after was succulent pork belly on a skewer. You can’t go wrong with pork!

I almost forgot to order tempura, so I called over the waiter to order their jumbo black tiger shrimp. Not only did it look like heaven, it tasted like it as well. Don’t forget the mayo. Of course I had to sample their sashimi to see what kind of quality they were working with. I asked the server to put together an assorted sashimi plate and I must say that the quality was quite nice. It’s not Japan, but still very tasty.

One of my favorite dishes of the evening had to of been the black cod which was marinated and served with salmon roe. It looked stunning and the taste was divine. The fish was so tender that it just fell apart in my mouth. I can’t forget to mention that throughout the meal I enjoyed several different high-quality sakes. The lovely staff even dipped into their personal collection to let me try something truly special, which was an unpasteurized, locally produced sake. Glorious.

Even though I was already stuffed, I had to order a few desserts to satisfy my sweet tooth. My favorite of the three was the mochi. If you didn’t know, mochi is a Japanese rice cake that is very soft and not too sweet. It was served with ice cream and berries.

The restaurant is clearly doing something right with consistently staying so busy. I was truly impressed with the amount of knowledge that the staff had in regards to their food and beverage offerings. Michael Tremblay, who is their sake expert, has traveled to Japan many times to learn an incredible amount about sake production. He is a true professional, and consistently made great food and alcohol pairings throughout the meal. Therefore, if you’re in Toronto, and you’re craving some fantastic Japanese food, I highly recommend that you visit Ki restaurant!

Bosk Restaurant Review (Toronto, Canada)

10 Jan 2017

Lately, I’ve been hearing many good things about the city of Toronto. It’s an 8 hour drive from Chicago, which isn’t too bad! I finally found myself with some time to visit and thought I’d take the opportunity. The first dinner I had was inside the Shangri-La hotel at their Bosk restaurant. The restaurant had a good buzz online, and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about!

Bosk Restaurant Review (Toronto, Canada) Blog Food Toronto

The first thing I noticed when entering Bosk was the intricate designs everywhere. Lots of beautiful wooden patterns on the walls, and lovely colorful lighting. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating. Allow me to remind you that this was winter time, so I sat inside to avoid the snow.

Bosk Restaurant Review (Toronto, Canada) Blog Food Toronto

Bosk has a fairly extensive food offering, including a three course, four course and the chef’s 10 course menus. The chef’s menu had the most intrigue because I wanted to get a real feel for all that the restaurant had to offer. I took some time to think over this life or death decision, and after a little bit of deliberation, I decided to tough it out and go with the 10 courses, along with the wine pairing of course. When in Rome and as Drake says, you only live once. Unlike the other set menus, this menu was a complete surprise. Exciting indeed.

The meal started off with some very well presented amuse-bouches. All looked beautiful, but there were a few that were definitely better than others. As the meal progressed, the dishes improved and became more and more mouth-watering.

I believe the moment when I started getting excited, was while eating the tuna. This was paired with a lovely sauvignon blanc. The course following this wonderful tuna, was a fantastic foie gras. Normally, I’m not a huge foie gras fan, but this one was just perfect. Not overpowering, just great! It was a melt in your mouth experience. From here on out, it was one glorious course after the next.

I’ll have to mention the perfectly seared scallops with a beautiful presentation. When it was all said and done, the course that I was most excited about, was the salmon from Vancouver. Along with looking phenomenal, it was cooked to perfection!

The Bosk restaurant made me happy. The dining room was simply gorgeous and the food matched wonderfully. I’d love to revisit in the summertime, to sit outdoors. The service was also great and worth mentioning. Mathew took great care of me and there was never a dull moment! It was definitely a meal to remember, making the Bosk restaurant inside of the Shangri-La hotel Toronto a solid choice for your next meal.
