Namo Restaurant Review: Italian Food in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam

29 Oct 2017

On my recent food exploration of Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam I checked out the Namo Italian restaurant located in District 1. The area is home to tons of fancy hotels, shopping and great food. After going up a few flights of stairs, we found our table. Our table was situated next to the window which offered a nice ambiance for the evening. The music was a upbeat providing more of a lounge feel. For the evening, our server Max was on top of his game, always right there when we needed anything. Thanks Max!

We started the evening off with their bread made from pizza dough and of course, wine. One was the Le Volte Dell’Ornellaia 2014 and the other was the Tancredi 2008. The Tancredi was a bit more intense and full-bodied, exactly what I prefer and would recommend to you!

The main event for the evening was the Black Angus Rib-Eye accompanied with green pepper sauce. The steak had a lot of nice fat running through it and I really loved the accompanied salt. To pair with this was more of my lovely wine choice. Fantastic. I did order salad and truffle fries to make it look like I’m healthy.

Max was worried that we wouldn’t have enough room for what was coming next but I assured him that I’m basically a competitive eater to put his mind at ease. Next up was a pizza, half with parma ham and half with mushrooms and truffles. After covering it all in chili I thought I died and went to heaven!

I topped up my glass of wine a few more times before it was time for dessert which was a tiramisu and glass of lemoncello. The lemoncello was great and the tiramisu was flawless. I’ve had tons of tiramisu in my day, but this one was perfect. Well done Namo, well done.

The evening went off without a hitch. From the moment we arrived, to the finish, the staff were great. There were no hiccups in service and every single item we ate was fairly good. Overall, I was quite impressed. The location of the restaurant also makes a very convenient place to visit. Without hesitation, I can easily recommend to you Namo in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam!

L’Usine Restaurant Review (Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam)

26 Oct 2017

I returned to Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam with my eyes set on exploring all of the ins and outs. Saigon is jam-packed full of amazing food and beverage outlets. Most recently, I’ve taken a deeper dive into the L’Usine restaurants. The brand has three locations around Saigon to check out!

My first visit included a breakfast at their Dong Khoi branch. The venue is located up one floor from the street. You have to sneak through an alley way and up a staircase to find it. Mixing contemporary styling and also selling merchandise make these cafes very unique venues. Of course, I had to start with a hot Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk. Something about Vietnamese coffee always puts me in a good mood! Wink.

L’Usine really focuses a lot on their breakfast menu, but has a ton more options as well. For breakfast we went with the English breakfast and the eggs benedict with salmon. Out of all the items I’ve tried, including the lunch, the eggs benedict was my absolute favorite! Mouthwatering.

After the breakfast was complete, a few days later we moved on to the Thanh Ton location, just a stones throw away. L’Usine Thanh Ton is their flagship location with many levels giving us lots of seating choices. Just like the Dong Khoi branch, there was a lot of merchandise being sold inside as well as a very lovely interior design. For lunch we went with a plethora of items to give the menu a full once over. Some items we ordered were a cold cuts platter, a spinach pie, pulled pork sandwich and once again the eggs benedict, because I love it so much! The restaurant also features a large variety of wines to make sure you fully enjoy your self.

Once we worked our way through all of the food, it was time for dessert and decided to go with the cheesecake as well as the red velvet cake. Not overwhelmingly sweet, the red velvet cake was just perfect and hit the spot.

Both L’Usine locations were very busy, showing that I’m not the only one that enjoys this brand. They obviously do a great job at bringing back customers. The staff were very personable and offered great service throughout the visit. Without a doubt, if you enjoy great food, pleasant service and great atmosphere, I would recommend you to visit one of the L’Usine locations in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam!

2 Michelin Star Shang Palace Restaurant Review Hong Kong

16 Oct 2017

First off, I’d like to say that I love Hong Kong! On my most recent trip I stayed at the Kowloon Shangri-La hotel. While there, I had the pleasure of eating at their two Michelin star Shang Palace restaurant. I was excited because I had brought my mother who I was showing around the region.

The Shangri-La’s luxurious design carried right into their Shang Palace restaurant. The dining room has high ceilings with lots of red and gold color. You’ll find white table cloths and only the finest of utensils and tableware. The attentive staff greeted us and brought us directly to a lovely table in the center of the room. There was a set menu prepared but before we began eating, we were served a welcome tea. It was just lovely and a good warm-up for our evening.

The first course of food included a wagyu beef, crispy noodles with egg and a piece of super juicy pork. This amazing sample plate started off the night with a bang! I accompanied this with a lovely red wine. When a meal starts off so good, I knew the rest would be a treat.

The next item was the double boiled chicken broth with fish maw, sea conch and matsutake mushroom. This was a subtle taste which led our taste buds on roller coaster. The meat was tender in the soup and made me remember a similar home-cooked chicken soup my mom used to make.

The most memorable course of the evening came next which was the Cantonese-style crispy chicken served with lemon juice and spicy salt. I’ve had roasted goose and duck but this chicken was on a whole other level. Eating it with the salt brought out so much flavor it made my head spin! I could eat the chicken skin for the rest of my life. Super crispy and packed full of flavor, it was an utter treat. Very well done.

Another very memorable dish of the evening was the fried rice with egg white, conpoy and crab meat. They had served some hot sauce in the beginning which I coated my rice with. Just the way I like it, hot!

To finish off the evening was of course the dessert. For this there was a double boiled pear soup with peach gum, followed by a tree of sweets. From beginning to end, this meal was perfect. This restaurant truly does deserve the highest of ratings. The design of the dining room, the attentive service and the incredible food make this a home run for any occasion. I’d recommend going with a group so you can sample lots of items. Enjoy your lovely meal at the Shang Palace in Hong Kong at the Kowloon Shangri-La hotel.

Shangri-La Hotel Review: Kowloon’s Most Luxurious Hotel?

15 Oct 2017

The Shangri-La brand encompasses extravagance. This year, while I was showing my mother around Hong Kong, we had the pleasure of visiting the Kowloon Shangri-La hotel. From the moment you step in the front door, you’ll immediately know what kind of property this is. Shangri-La’s are known for their very impressive lobbies. Without fail, lots of gold and many giant chandeliers are usually present. This was my mother’s first visit to such a hotel and she was very impressed!

We arrived quite early in the morning but the staff were kind enough to allow us access to the Horizon Club lounge to enjoy breakfast! I did not request this, they were just lovely enough to suggest this option. So thoughtful! The breakfast had both a buffet as well as an à la carte menu. I went with the minute steak and an egg.

The steak was absolutely mind blowing! Cooked to perfection, this could have been served at dinner, it was so tender and juicy. While we’re talking about the Horizon Club lounge, I’ll have to mention the gorgeous view. Being on the Kowloon side of Hong Kong, it’s nice to observe the grand skyline of the island. Better yet is enjoying the view with some great food and drinks at the lounge!

Shortly after breakfast, the room was ready, so it was time to go down one floor to check it out. The spacious room shared the same view as the Horizon Club lounge, a panorama of Hong Kong’s Victoria harbor. There was a lovely seating area next to a large window with treats waiting for me on the table. A warm welcome letter, fruit and hot tea served by the staff were a lovely way to be greeted. This room was a great place to spend time while in Hong Kong!

Also quite spacious, the bathroom had a large shower and bathtub. I’m a huge fan of the Shangri-La toiletries, all in the same colored boxes with great quality products.

Heading down to the lower levels, you will find the indoor pool, fitness center and changing areas. The pool is on the smaller side but still lovely and has a hot tub next to it. To offset the smaller pool, there is a very extensive gym. The gym was very sufficient and after my workout I headed into the locker room to clean myself up.

Inside the locker rooms you’ll find even more goodness. They have both a steam room and large sauna. My favorite was the very hot steam room. Another nice touch would be the clothes dryer. I was very happy that I could dry my workout clothes.

I enjoyed being on the Kowloon side of Hong Kong which was in a closer vicinity to many places of the city that I enjoy. I was sure to take my mom to the Nan Lian garden where we snapped some lovely photos and enjoyed the calmness. I must insist you visit as well!

Eating Adventures Food Tour Review Hong Kong

12 Oct 2017

It was my mother’s first trip to Hong Kong and I was excited to show her the local culture! To do this, I wanted to explore the local food with her and decided on booking a tour with Eating Adventures Tours. In Hong Kong, they offer two tours, one is on Hong Kong island and the other is in Kowloon. Both have a lot to offer but I decided on the Kowloon food tour.

The tour began with meeting our bubbly guide outside of the Mong Kok MTR station. After a quick introduction, we were at our first stop, which happened to be roasted goose. This happened to be a very famous goose restaurant with a long history and it was overall great! I was told that many Asian tourists buy this goose before they leave Hong Kong to bring home.

The tour was more than just simply eating tasty food, along the way we were offered some insights about the local culture and history. We learned a bit about various dining customs and when locals will eat certain foods. All was very interesting! After the goose, we moved on to six more tastings.

We went through local markets, sampling street food as well as stopping at restaurants such as one serving snake soup, another serving fresh tofu and a bakery with glorious egg tarts. This was my first time trying snake soup and I must say I enjoyed it. Surprisingly, the taste was not very different than chicken, but you’ll have to see for yourself.

Towards the end of the tour we stopped at a dim sum restaurant. This was a casual dining experience where we got to try a plethora of dishes. I loved every item we ate! I’ve had hundreds of dim sum meals in my life and this was definitely something special.

Man Ho Restaurant Review: Best Cantonese Food in Guangzhou

08 Oct 2017

On my most recent visit to Guangzhou, China, I stay at the Marriott Tianhe hotel and tried an authentic Cantonese meal at their Man Ho restaurant. When I arrived, I was happy to see tons of local people. Seeing locals informed me that the food will be fantastic! The dining room is what you’d expect at this type of classic Cantonese restaurant. We were quickly seated at a lovely table with a view and took a look at the menu.

The menu at Man Ho is quite extensive but the restaurant does offer a few set menus which makes things easier for easier decision making. We went with the Cantonlicious set for 2 B. You do still get some options to choose from, but they’re more narrowed making ordering a breeze. We of course started with tea and worked our way through the first course of food which included dried anchovies and marinated spicy beef. Once I sunk my teeth into these dishes, I knew the rest of the evening would be a treat!

For example, the sweet-and-sour pork was the best sweet-and-sour pork I’ve ever had in my life! This is no exaggeration. The inside was moist and tender and yet had a crispy outside full of flavor. Some of the other amazing dishes I really enjoyed included the honey glazed barbecue pork and the roasted goose. But let’s be honest, I enjoyed everything that I ate that evening. Thinking about it now makes my mouth water!

To wrap up the meal we went with the mango soup and the chilled mango pudding. A lighter dessert was perfect to finish off this hefty meal. The service during the meal was great. The staff were always around to make sure we were helped even though the restaurant was busy.  The staff were nice enough to give us some control over how fast or slow the food was delivered. All in all, I had a fantastic evening! If you’re looking for great Cantonese food Guangzhou I would insist you to try the Man Ho restaurant at the Marriott Tianhe in Guangzhou, China.

Marriott Tianhe Hotel Review (Guangzhou, China)

08 Oct 2017

As soon as I arrived at the Marriott in Guangzhou, China, I felt like I was home. The year before, I stayed at the Marriott in Shanghai for 11 nights which you’ll have to read about in a separate article. This property felt very similar to the Shanghai property. After a very lovely greeting, I went up to the 13th floor to view my room.

For my stay, I had access to the club lounge which is on the 20th floor. The Marriott Tianhe club lounge offers a special breakfast, afternoon snacks and tea as well as evening hors d’oeuvres and cocktail hour. You can enjoy cocktails from 5:30pm all the way to 9:30pm, and beer is available all day. Incredible! The breakfast was great but I also want to point out the great food in the evening! The lounge hors d’oeuvres are served from 5:30pm to 7:30pm and could easily replace dinner.

When my time was up at the Marriott Tianhe in Guangzhou, I was incredibly sad to leave. Marriotts are so incredibly consistent, this property definitely beat all of my expectations. A Must Stay in Yangshuo: Banyan Tree Resort Review

03 Oct 2017

Ever since I moved to China, I wanted to visit the magical and mountainous place called Yangshuo. Yangshuo is known for its majestic landscapes that are covered in tall mountains and winding rivers. These mountains are so popular that they even appear on the back of the Chinese currency. From Shenzhen to Yangshuo, it only takes about three hours on board a train. After some serious research, I decided the best option was to stay at the Banyan Tree Yangshuo.

The Banyan Tree Yangshuo is located about 12 km outside of the city center. Located along a river I was fully encompassed with a sense of serenity. The design and architecture incorporate lots of traditional Chinese influences. There was a Chinese pagoda in the middle of a pond just outside of my room!

My large room was located on the same floor as the lobby, which was very convenient. The hotel is quite new! Once I opened the door I was impressed by many characteristics in the room including the tea and coffee station, the gorgeous bathtub, the balcony and the modern charging point near the desk. It was definitely a warm welcome with a box of fruit on the living room table. Throughout the stay, the service was on point. Every time they cleaned or did turn-down service, they went the extra mile to make sure everything was flawless. They often left treats which is a sure way to make Pierre like you. I also liked how the laid out the robes on the beds in the evening. It’s the small touches that make the big differences.

After spending some time in the room, it was nice to explore the grounds. The property offers lots of facilities including a pool along the river, a medium-size gym and of course, a spa. I enjoyed the massage so much I wrote a full article about the experience here.

The resort has many activities, some are complementary and some are for an additional fee. I did like that they had free to use bikes. The property also offers a free shuttle bus to the center of Yangshuo multiple times per day. One of the days there we took a raft down the Yulong river. It was beautiful but hot in the middle of the day! Pro tip: go rafting in the morning or evening.

The Banyan Tree Yangshuo has two restaurants, a Chinese restaurant and a western restaurant. You’ll be able to read my full review of their Baiyun Chinese restaurant in a separate article. The western restaurant is where you’ll find the incredible buffet breakfast. I ate sever meals there and was satisfied with all! They really hit a home run with the quality of the food and the taste far exceeded my expectations. To top it off, all of the staff were incredibly kind and accommodating.

The Banyan Tree Yangshuo is close enough to the action of nearby activities but just far enough away to offer a really tranquil experience. I think it’s always nice to have a lovely place to return to after exploring the outdoors. Not only does this property have fantastic facilities, great activity options and good service, but also a lovely food. It will take a little effort to get there, but I promise it’s worth it! Yangshuo, China is definitely a bucket list destination and I’m quite certain that the Banyan Tree is the best place to stay while visiting!

02 Oct 2017

While staying at the Banyan Tree hotel in Yangshuo, China, I was able to use all of their facilities including their spa. The spa is located nearby the gym and has a view of the river. The first thing I noticed when entering was the gorgeous design, everything looked quite new.

For my treatment, I went with the Gentle Touch massage because I am a gentle soul. The treatment rooms were gorgeous, relaxing lighting. There was a bathtub next to the window looking out to the river, just incredible.

My masseuse was named Camilla and she was absolutely incredible. She knew everything I wanted from my massage and hit all the points perfectly. The massage went off without a hitch and I felt incredible afterwards! My mother also had a massage at the spa and went for the Balinese which she enjoyed as well.

02 Oct 2017

I have to admit that I loved my time at the Banyan Tree hotel in Yangshuo, China. It has some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever witnessed in my life! The Banyan Tree has multiple food and beverage outlets including two restaurants. I ate at both but will discuss the Chinese food in this article.

The Baiyun Chinese restaurant had lots of local food from the area, as well as food from other parts of China. The restaurant offers a great view of the surrounding mountains. Gorgeous! I also made sure to try the local beer as well.

First we started with a sample platter that had several items including beef, chicken and vegetables. Some of the other dishes we tried included an amazing fish dish mixed with both tofu and vegetables. The texture and flavor were incredibly good! This dish left a very wholesome feeling inside of me.

To finish off the meal we went with the mango dessert that came with grapefruit. Once again tasty.
