L’Usine’s New Concept in Saigon: Acoustic Night

04 Mar 2018

There are multiple L’Usine restaurant and cafe locations around Ho Chi Minh city, read about their Dong Khoi and their flagship Le Thanh Ton location in this article. Recently, I heard that they were trying out a new dinner concept which features a multiple course menu, accompanied with live acoustic music. I had to check it out!

Once we arrived at L’Usine Le Thanh Ton, we went up a few floors to enter the dining room. The restaurant has several floors, all with a slightly different feel. The dining room featured intimate lighting, a great spot for a date. The music that was played was popular music from a variety of decades.

We were served a glass of wine to start and then we dove into the first course which were the Chicken Caesar Salad Rolls. This was the most Vietnamese twist you could put on a Caesar salad. A salad wrapped in rice paper rolls, similar looking to many Vietnamese rolls, but quite a different taste.

It was a three course set menu, and we had a variety of options for the main course. We chose the Piri Piri Chicken and the grilled Black Angus rib-eye with fries. As I cut easily through the steak, I noticed how tender it was. I then loaded up my fork with a bite to dip into the salt before sinking my teeth into pure bliss. The accompanying French fries were perfect, crisp on the outside, while moist on the in. The only thing missing was hollandaise sauce, but salt did the trick for me. The chicken was flavorful and tasty as well, but no match for the incredible steak!

There were three options for dessert, we chose the coconut fluffy cheesecake and the passion fruit crème brûlée. Both of our desserts came beautifully presented. Little works of art that would soon be in our stomachs. The cheesecake was quite light, like biting into a cloud, not thick like New York cheesecake. The crème brûlée was a bit heavier with the perfect crust on top. Both well-executed desserts.

The evening was a comfortable one, with a great atmosphere and lovely food. As with my previous meals, the restaurant’s service was also quite good. I’d easily be able to recommend you to enjoy a meal at L’Usine to enjoy the music and fantastic food. Enjoy!

Afternoon Tea in Shanghai at the Mandarin Oriental

16 Oct 2016

Something I often enjoy while I travel is afternoon tea. On my recent trip to Shanghai, China, I visited the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Pudong and tried their afternoon tea. The location of the hotel isn’t the most convenient for public transport so I would recommend you to take a taxi.

They offer both a traditional afternoon tea set as well as a regularly updated alternative version. We decided to go with the classic and more traditional variety. Of course, while living the high-life, we had to have a glass of champagne to accompany our tea.

After enjoying the lobby for a few moments, our tea arrived. I went with a black tea because I needed a little caffeine boost. The tea was good, nothing that blew me away but it was nice. Not long after and the food began to arrive. The first thing that I noticed was the beauty in the presentation. All of the items looked like tons of effort went into their creation.

I starting with the more salty and savory items and worked my way to the sweets. I really enjoyed the salmon sandwiches! I also loved that they kept refilling the olives. Pierre loves olives.

A few hours later and we were very full! With beautiful presentation and great service, everything was wonderful. It was a very classy afternoon. I would insist that you order the traditional set menu. Overall, it was lovely and you should be sure to check out the afternoon tea at the Mandarin Oriental hotel the next time you’re in Shanghai.

I Love Wiener Schnitzel

06 Jun 2016

While staying at the Marriott in Vienna, I was intrigued when I heard about their Garten Café. It was one of my last meals and I wanted something traditional. I was assured by the staff that this was where to go. The Garten Café is located on the ground floor of the Marriott. The way it’s designed is actually quite classy and comfortable. It almost feels like an outdoor terrace.

To start, we went with two soups. One was a potato-based soup and one was a tomato-based soup. Both were fantastic and just thinking about them gets me excited!

Obviously, for the main course I need to go super traditional so I went with the schnitzel. I must say that this was the best schnitzel that I’ve ever had. Super crispy, yet moist and full of flavor.

Our server was excellent. His name was Robin and he was very insightful and helped produce a very wonderful evening. Cheers to the professional.

Almost every Marriott that I visit assures me that their cheesecake is the best. Sometimes it’s true and sometimes it’s not but this time it was definitely fantastic! Don’t forget to accompany your dessert with some of their amazing teas!

When it was all said and done, the meal was absolutely fantastic. Sometimes you don’t expect the most out of a lobby restaurant but this was definitely above and beyond! If you’re looking for some great food, do not hesitate to visit Garten Cafe in Vienna!

Cafe M Review (Casablanca, Morocco)

17 Apr 2016

Proper send offs are a major key to a great life. Luckily my last meal in Casablanca was at the Hyatt Regency’s Cafe M. It’s a French restaurant located on the ground floor.

Cafe M Review (Casablanca, Morocco) Africa Blog Cafes Food Morocco

Firstly I want to say that I really enjoyed the styling of the Cafe M. Very sleek and also had a professional vibe. Pierre likes. We started with some bread and butter. Extra tasty but probably due to the fact that I hadn’t eaten in about 7 hours. Chuckles.

Anyways, we had a chance to speak with our waiter, who was very professional. He actually recommended a Moroccan wine that I’ve already had at the hotel’s Moroccan restaurant. It’s called Eclipse and I went with it again because I enjoyed it so much the first time! To get the meal started, we went for the tuna tartare. This tuna tartare we exceptionally good. I’m a salt fanatic so I may have added a touch for a stronger bite. Pro tip: make sure you eat the tuna tartare with bread. Magical.

Cafe M Review (Casablanca, Morocco) Africa Blog Cafes Food Morocco

I was in the mood for meat that night so I went with a giant steak. Lord have mercy! It was perfectly cooked! I’m not sure if it’s all the French in my blood, but every time I eat at a French restaurant, I really enjoy myself. This was no exception to the rule!

Cafe M Review (Casablanca, Morocco) Africa Blog Cafes Food Morocco

We also went with a mushroom risotto. Risotto is probably one of my most favorite foods. The taste was great and it was super creamy. It could have been cooked just a touch longer but was still great! A few glasses of wine into the meal and I was feeling pretty swell. I tried to stop eating the steak several times because it was so big, but I couldn’t help myself! I practically finished it! Feeling stuffed but very satisfied.

Cafe M Review (Casablanca, Morocco) Africa Blog Cafes Food Morocco

For dessert we went with something that I had never tried before. It was basically the French version of apple pie, it’s called clafouti. It was great! Super tasty when you combine with the ice cream!

Overall, this meal was completely on point! It was super busy that night, but we still had great service! The atmosphere was lovely and the food was perfect. Probably the best send off that I could’ve had! If you’re in Casablanca and want some great French cuisine, then I would highly recommend you visit Cafe M in the Hyatt Regency hotel!

Perfect Afternoon Tea in London

All of you are great people and I know you read the review of the Grosvenor House JW Marriott Hotel where I mentioned how amazing the recent updates have been. While in London last time around I was able to try a few different afternoon teas at some of the finest hotels London has to offer. My favorite of the bunch was at the Park Room inside the Grosvenor House JW Marriott Hotel.

First things first, let’s discuss the stunning Park Room. The room just gets me excited. So classy, elegant and overall beautiful. A majority of the room uses whites and lighter colors and then they contrast that with a few green sofas. A masterpiece! We haven’t even gotten to the tea yet and I’m already in love. Lucky for us our server was from Thailand and you know that I speak Thai so I was very excited to chat her up a bit! For those of you who are familiar with afternoon tea. you’ll know that it’s not all just about the tea. A lot of it is about the food and the champagne!

We also received a pink welcome drink with white chocolate and pop rocks on the top. Note to any food establishment. Do something unique that will leave a lasting impression on your guest’s. Pop rocks happen to be a very unique way to start an afternoon tea. Well done JW, well done.

Typically tea doesn’t get super exciting. However, when you order a tea that encompasses so much flavor it shocks you then it becomes very exciting indeed! The tea I ordered had the word milk in it. With all my experience living in Asia, when I think of milk tea I think of tea with condensed milk added to it and perhaps bubbles. However, this was something different. This was a tea that had a milky flavor even though there was no milk present. How they do this is beyond me and astonishing!

Soon after we got some open-faced sandwiches that were just a delight, specifically the shrimp and salmon. Then after it was time for our tower of goodness! As per usual the bottom is the place for sandwiches and as you move up you get sweeter and sweeter. Everything on the stand was a delight. My favorite sandwich had to be the chicken sandwich. We were sure to get a few extras!

I absolutely love afternoon tea but I don’t normally get this excited. However, this was a phenomenal experience. It’s a great way to spend the afternoon! Of course we started with champagne. This is always great to set the mood and relax before the main event. Wink. Soon after we were offered a fine selection of teas by The East India Company. I went with the Dragonwell Lung Ching which was a wonderfully smooth green tea.

Of course the scones were next. The scones were great! There is a big war between the order of applying clotted cream and jam. Which do you put on first? I of course put on the clotted cream then the jam to keep it clean and organized. Do you do it the right way or wrong way? Discuss.

Mind Blowing Food Court in New York City

When Pierre thinks of a food court he thinks of a magical food court that was once magnificent in a far away land. The food court I initially think of as the mother of food courts was in Bangkok, Thailand. It was one that I frequented and they offered fantastic meals for amazingly low prices with an atmosphere that couldn’t be rivaled. A few years of eating there and the owners decided that they wanted to ruin it and up the prices along with lowering the quality to completely destroy the atmosphere. Long story short, Pierre’s heart was crushed and he has had difficulty finding a food court he could trust since then.

Anyway, some time has passed and my heart has healed. I decided to get back on the horse and check out some more food courts around the globe. An upscale food court that caught my eye during my trip to New York City is called City Kitchen and it is connected to the Row Hotel in Times Square.

This is the place where dreams are made people. There is a wide variety of shops offering food of varying ethnicities. These fine establishments include Azuki sushi, Box which is Mediterranean food, Dough the donut shop, Gabriela’s Taqueria,  Kuro Obi ramen which is owned by Ipuddo, Luke’s seafood and Whitmans focusing on burgers and the like. Oh. My. God. I literally tried everything!

Mind Blowing Food Court in New York City Blog Cafes Food New York North America United States

Never have I been to a food court where everything I ate really hit the spot like this. Before New York, I was spending some time in Chicago and being utterly disappointed with the Japanese ramen there. I hadn’t had a good bowl of ramen in almost a year until I went to City Kitchen and ate at Kuro Obi. It was legendary. That was the first meal I ate and it set a very good first impression.

Mind Blowing Food Court in New York City Blog Cafes Food New York North America United States

Once I had the first good meal my heart was set ablaze yearning for more. I tried the next place inside the food court and then the next and the next and before I knew it I had eaten everything that they had to offer. I didn’t gain 1,000 pounds surprisingly. I still look sexy, don’t worry.

Mind Blowing Food Court in New York City Blog Cafes Food New York North America United States

The atmosphere at this place is actually quite nice as well. My only qualm is how busy it was. During a few meals I was left standing eating along the window where they have a bar-type setup. It’s really not a big issue because it just shows how much people enjoy the food.

Mind Blowing Food Court in New York City Blog Cafes Food New York North America United States

When it’s all said and done, City Kitchen rocked my boat. It did me well and I would not hesitate to return and eat more of the delicious food. That’s why I want my New York readers and anyone traveling to New York City to check it out and tell me what you think! I’m 100% sure you won’t be disappointed!

New York City’s Most Expensive Brunch

Everybody loves brunch. If you don’t like brunch then I don’t like you. Now that we’ve got that out of the way we can talk about the exquisite brunch at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. During my two week trip to New York I was invited to this amazing experience. I’m so kind and so generous that I brought a guest along to enjoy the plethora of food and drinks with me. It happened to be none other than infamous food blogger Dara aka The Skinny Pig aka Big Bacon Bonanza.

This was my first time to really explore New York City believe it or not. The Waldorf Astoria Hotel is an icon in the city. Just walking in the front door and up the steps put me in a state of awe. How magnificent of a design! We made our way into the Peacock Alley restaurant where the brunch takes place. I’m going to stop and just make a note that this is the most impressive brunch setup I have ever seen in my life.

It’s really a shocker that I’m not 5,000 pounds right now. There are so many different foods to choose from! Certainly, something for everyone. My research tells me that this brunch is also along with being magnificent the most expensive brunch in the entire city at approximately $125 per adult. Sometimes you just need to treat yourself.

After exploring the lay of the land it was time to get down and dirty. I quickly got to work loading up my plates (yes, multiple plates) with food from all reaches of the universe. You want seafood? You got it. You want beef Wellington? It’s right over here. You want a chocolate fountain? Please, help yourself. When I say they have it all, they really do.

This place is no joke! The food looks good and the important thing is that it tastes good as well. Along with our brunch we were able to order some cocktails to help to truly enjoy the experience. Some of these were better than others but overall quite enjoyable. They were kind enough to offer us some gin that was aged in bourbon barrels and 115 proof. Pierre is quite a manly man but this did get him tipsy quite quickly.

New York City's Most Expensive Brunch Blog Cafes Food New York North America United States

A fun fact of the day is that your favorite breakfast food was invented here! The official story goes that Lemuel Benedict wandered into the hotel in 1894 and ordered “poached eggs, crisp bacon, buttered toast and a hooker of hollandaise” to cure his hangover. The Maître d’hôtel was so impressed with the creation he added it to the menu after changing out bacon for ham and toast for an English muffin. History was in my mouth and I loved it.

Caffe Mondo Review (Beirut, Lebanon)

10 Jan 2016

Who doesn’t love melted cheese?!?

Sadly it was my final day at the Phoenicia hotel in Beirut. However, there was a fantastic lunch in store for Pierre at their Italian restaurant called Caffe Mondo.

The Phoenicia hotel has so much to offer it’s insane. Luckily there was a chance to visit three of their restaurants. Statistically you would just assume that at least one of them wouldn’t be fantastic but it was quite the contrary. All of them were fabulous. You’ll be happy to know that I have written reviews for all of them along with the spa and the hotel stay.

Anyways, like I said it was my last day at the Phoenicia hotel so I was sad to leave. Going down to their Italian cafe was a way to boost my mood and help let go of the sadness of leaving.

After ordering a Lebanese beer and having some mozzarella for an appetizer it was time to move on to the main course which was… drum roll. Lasagna! Now this is what I’m talking about when I think of decadent Italian food. I could feel the passion that went into this cheesy masterpiece! It made me feel warm and fuzzy inside and that is the type of food that I like. Melted cheese going straight to my hips.

Pro Tip: If you partake in professional eating like Pierre you better make sure you hit the gym afterwards. Otherwise I can guarantee you’ll blow up into a whale-sized human.

Even though I was super full I had to order a dessert. Pierre approved. The combination of the chocolate cake and ice cream is always a classic.

In conclusion, if you have a hankering for some great Italian food while you’re in Beirut you should definitely try Caffé Mondo! Make Pierre proud!

Osulloc Green Tea Cafe Review (Seoul, Korea)

11 Aug 2015

As you know, as the world knows, Pierre loves his coffee. However, Pierre also enjoys a fantastic cup of green tea. Walking around my little neighborhood here in Abguejeong near subway station exit 4 I spotted Osulloc Café and I was intrigued. About a month ago, I finally decided to go there and see if it tasted as good as it looked from the outside. What a great decision that was! Now I have a big problem on my hands, I’m addicted. They have some of the best green tea desserts that I have ever experienced. Normally, I get the King Ofredo and oh is it good (see what I did there?) It’s a green tea blended latte with red beans, heavy whip cream, green tea cake, green tea ice cream along with a little cookie on the top. This is one of the most amazing green tea drinks I’ve ever had in my entire life! It’s a little expensive at around $7-8 USD but I think it’s worth it.
