Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin: Bangkok’s Top Restaurant?

19 Feb 2022

While staying at the incredibly lovely Siam Kempinski Bangkok Hotel, I had a chance to have a dinner at their famous Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin Restaurant. Read about the hotel here. According to the press release “Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin is recognised as the home of modern Thai gastronomy where exquisitely composed dishes are prepared using global cooking techniques with the best-quality seasonal ingredients.” I do think this sums up the restaurant perfectly! For the evening, I enjoyed their 8-course Winter Journey tasting menu with accompanied wine pairing. The menu is a collaboration between chef Henrik Yde-Andersen and chef Chayawee Suthcharitchan who is the head chef at Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin.

Entering the restaurant gives a strong and delightful impression with it’s grand ceilings, lotus flower ponds, spaciousness, and unique booths which created an intimate setting. It was a unique setting which was relaxing and comfortable, and it’s design truly added to the soon to come, culinary adventure.

Soon after being seated by the warm and welcoming staff, we were served a welcome drink, a welcome tea, and also a few welcome bites. Unlike many restaurants who don’t seem to understand, Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin knows well that it’s important to start off with a bang! These bites had a strong punch of flavor which left me wanting more and built my excitement! Well done, seriously.

After warming up a bit, we moved onto the eight courses of the menu. One course that was very memorable was the Prawn Tom Yum soup with variety of prawn side dishes. The Tom Yum soup was incredibly bold and really left a strong impression on me! This paired with the prawn shumai, prawn bread, and prawn cracker left my head spinning.

Throughout the evening, the staff came to prepare various courses tableside which created a stronger sense of a journey rather than an average fine dining meal. This took the whole evening to the next level which I was really impressed with! This also gave us a chance to get to know our server better named Nancy. I literally had a smile on my face for the entire evening because of how tasty everything was and how much fun I had with the staff! We ate so many delectable bites.

Another dish that has stuck with me days after eating this amazing meal was the Yellow Curry with Crab Meat, Corn and Fermented Garlic. But really, I could appreciate every dish, incredible.

Sweet Stuff

When it came to desserts, their pre-dessert was the one that hit me the hardest. It was the Flowers of Thailand which was created apparently by the chef after experiencing some inspiration inside of a taxicab in Bangkok. While Nancy explained the story I didn’t really understand until I took the first bite. After I got to taste and smell it, I immediately understood because it brought me right to the same place as what the chef had described.

Terraço Jardins: An Impressive Dining Experience in Sao Paulo

During my first visit to São Paulo, Brazil, I had an opportunity to eat dinner at the lovely newly renovated Terraço Jardins Restaurant. The Terraço Jardins Restaurant is located inside of the Renaissance São Paulo Hotel. Before arriving I had seen photos of the interior and they made me super excited to visit because the dining room was so beautiful. During this time I was actually staying at the Marriott Executive Apartments Sao Paulo which you can read about in more detail here.

The dining room of the Terraço Jardins Restaurant makes you feel like you’re in a very spacious and chic greenhouse. This is because the building itself is basically a large glass case. There are lots of plants and delightful soft lighting. The atmosphere is great for taking photos. That being said, there are areas with slightly less light that create a more intimate setting as well. It’s nice to have the best of both worlds!

We were led to our table by a friendly hostess and taken care of for the evening by the waiter named Andre. Andre was attentive, thoughtful, and provided good service throughout the evening. To get things started. I went for the tuna sashimi dish that was meant for sharing. I was impressed that this dish came with the perfect amount of salt. Salt is important to me and this is something that I like about Brazilian chefs, knowing how much is enough. That being said, I did find that sprinkling a bit of lemon on the tuna, really completed the dish and made it pop.

For the main courses we went with the pork cheek, Brazilian seafood stew, and cacio e pepe pasta. Of these three dishes the pasta was my favorite. However, all were fairly tasty and felt like home-cooked meals. Just heartwarming! I also took note of the generous portion sizes which provided good value for money. Nothing really jumped out at me in regards uniqueness, but all were well prepared and balanced.

To finish the evening off I tried the brigadeiro pie and a Brazilian fruit sorbet. If you have a super sweet tooth, the brigadeiro pie is extremely sweet. It was so sweet that I could only eat a couple bites of it before taking a break. The sorbet on the other hand was a bit more tart.

The evening at the Terraço Jardins Restaurant went off without any major hiccups. What stood out to me most was the lovely atmosphere that the dinging room provides. It was only the middle of the week but the restaurant was quite full. Always a great sign! As mentioned before, the food was all fairly decent but nothing that changed my life with originality. All in all, if you’re looking for a quality meal, with great service, and a atmosphere, I would definitely check out the Terraço Jardins Restaurant inside of the Renaissance Sao Paulo Hotel.

Uyghur Food in Istanbul: Tanrıdağ Restaurant Review

09 Sep 2021

The first time I tried Uyghur food was actually in Shanghai during a lovely food tour in which you can read more about here. I remember being shocked that this glorious Islamic food even existed in China in the first place. At that time, I mainly remember having kebabs and a Middle Eastern style bread. Fast-forward about 4 years and I’m living in Istanbul and in desperate need of some authentic Asian cuisine to give me the spice fix I needed! After a year of living in Istanbul, I had come to the conclusion that although Asian food definitely exists in many places in the city, it’s not necessarily always tasty or authentic. Occasionally yes you’ll find some decent Korean restaurants for example, but most commonly no especially when it comes to Japanese food.

Luckily during my research, I stumbled upon an area with a large population of Uyghurs which was in the Fatih district of Istanbul. Here is where I discovered several restaurants that serve this delectable Uyghur cuisine! My first stop was the Tanrıdağ Restaurant. When I walked up, I noticed right away that it was filled with Chinese Uyghurs and not a lot of Turkish people, so I knew I was in the right place!

There were so many dishes that I wanted to try but we were only two people so I had to choose wisely, especially because the portions were huge. We started by drinking a pot of green tea. The caffeine high I get from tea seems to be a different and a more long lasting high than that of coffee. When the food finally came I was buzzing like a bee from the tea and ready to consume! First was an incredible cucumber salad, then a few meat dishes with flavorful sauce, and lastly a piece of their Napoleon cake with just the right texture.

The general theme of the meal was perfectly seasoned dishes that were exactly what I was looking for! Although I had never had any of these particular dishes before, being that I’ve lived in other parts of China, I was delighted with the use of spices which I knew well such as Sichuan peppercorns. I love spicy food, that being said, none of these dishes were over the top with the spice level. Balancing all these flavors perfectly is a true artform and that is why I’m going out of my way to write this article altogether!

The service was also fairly warm for this culture and part of the world. When the staff saw how excited I was about the food, they even offered some of their hand-pulled noodles free of charge!

Uyghur Food in Istanbul: Tanrıdağ Restaurant Review Asia Blog Food Istanbul Turkey

I hope one day I can make it to the Northeast region of China to try this food in its birthplace. I also hope the culture still exists in the future considering what is happening in the country now. If you love authentic Chinese food, enjoy a bit of spice, and are in Istanbul, definitely pay a visit to Tanrıdağ Restaurant. This would be a great place to try Uyghur food for the first time or to enjoy it again if you already know it!

Nusr-Et Maçka Palas Restaurant Review: Just hype?

09 Nov 2020

During my second stay at the Park Hyatt Istanbul Macka Palas I got a chance to eat at the new Nusr-Et Restaurant. Since my last visit five years ago, Nusret Gökçe has purchased the hotel and placed a beautiful new restaurant on the rooftop. To be honest, from seeing the funny memes I had no idea what to expect when it came to the actual food and service quality, but I was excited to find out!

To start off, we need to discuss how beautiful this restaurant actually is! Everywhere you turn, you see beauty. It’s all very well lit too which makes it great for taking photos, as you would expect as the owner got his fame from social media. Everything is glitzy and glamorous and dotted with Nusret’s personal artwork.

There are both indoor and outdoor seating. The interior is mostly white with red accents and the outdoor area is mostly blue with white accents. Both lovely. The outdoor section has a retractable roof but it was closed as it was quite chilly during the my fall visit.

Service

First and foremost I noticed right away how many staff members were floating around the Nusr-Et Maçka Palas Restaurant. There were tons and we were quickly approached upon arrival and whisked away to a table. Throughout the meal, the staff did a lovely job and making sure all our needs were met. The sommelier was especially friendly and enjoyable to have small talk with as well.

Now time for the main event! To get started, I ordered the beef tartar and the smoked salad which were both recommendations from our server. From my first bite into the beef tartar, I knew that this was going to be a great meal. It had the perfect balance of saltiness, tartness, and fat to make my head explode. To be honest, while living in Turkey, it hasn’t always been easy to find food that is seasoned right, but lucky for me, they nailed it here. The salad was also just bursting with enjoyable flavors.

Nusr-Et Maçka Palas Restaurant Review: Just hype? Asia Blog Food Istanbul Turkey

I accompanied these two items with a 2009 Catena Zapata Argentinian Malbec. The wine is definitely on the pricier side but had to go for it because of what was to come. We were off to a glorious start folks!

For the main courses, as you would probably guess, I went for more beef, 700 grams to be exact! The restaurant has a wide variety of lamb options as well but personally I’m more of a cowboy. After living in Japan over the last few years, the “Kobe” steak caught my eye. Unfortunately, this didn’t turn out to be actual Kobe beef, but still came highly recommended so I went for it. I ordered this and I believe it was the Dallas Steak. My recommendation would also be the “Kobe”.

Nusr-Et Maçka Palas Restaurant Review: Just hype? Asia Blog Food Istanbul Turkey

I was blown away by how good everything tasted and how perfectly it was cooked. I paired the beef with their deep-fried onion, spinach, and of French fries. I savored each bite and sip. Heaven!

To finish off the evening, we went for a golden HAVUÇ DİLİMİ and golden cappuccino. The gold is pretty to look at, but obviously doesn’t do anything for flavor.

Conclusion

Nusr-Et Maçka Palas Restaurant Review: Just hype? Asia Blog Food Istanbul Turkey

When it was all said and done, the Nusr-Et Maçka Palas Restaurant is way more than internet hype. To be honest, this was right up there with some of the higher-end steakhouses that I’ve visited in my life. Well done Mr. Gökçe. Chic Dining Along the Bosphorus: Feriye Restaurant Review

06 Oct 2020

For the last month and a half I’ve been exploring Istanbul, my new home. Most of my conquests have been focused around food and drink. This has led me to Feriye, a beautifully modern and elegant fine-dining restaurant located directly on the Bosphorus Strait. Actually, the restaurant is located right next to Feriye Palace which is an Ottoman Palace that is over 100 years old. In every direction from the restaurant there are stunning views during all times of day.

Feriye’s dining room is simply stunning and it was great that the roof could retract. I love the circular lights that dotted the ceiling which gave a feeling of elegance. Upon arrival, we were quickly attended to by the very courteous staff. Thankfully, this courteous service continued throughout the evening. To get the meal started we ordered two cocktails. The Espresso Martini was absolutely incredible!

Next was a large variety of Turkish meze. Honestly there were so many that I could have just ate them alone for the dinner. Each dish was fairly unique, offering a good chance to sample several flavors. My favorite out of all of them as a was the octopus with green salad. Most were tasty, but mostly flavors that I’ve experienced before.

Next was a second round of cocktails which included a Spicy Passion and a Mixed Berry. Soon after the cocktails came the appetizers which included shrimp, calamari, octopus with puréed beans, salad, as well as fried liver. For these, the shrimp were my favorite with their tart sauce. Another item I truly enjoyed was the octopus which was super tender! The Turkish really know how to cook Octopus, I’m impressed.

Then it was time for yet another round of cocktails and the main courses. For drink I had an old fashioned and for the entrées I had the sea bass, seafood rice, and beef ribs. These were all splendid but I must say that the seafood rice took the gold medal! It was just so rich in flavor and packed with tasty seafood. The beef ribs were also super tender and reminded me of home cooking.

Overall, I enjoyed my evening at the Feriye Restaurant. Feriye does very well when it comes to ambiance, service, location, and properly cooking the dishes. By properly cooking I mean that everything we a was cooked to perfection and super tender. To be honest everything I ate was rather enjoyable but some items could have had a bit more of a punch. That being said, all in all, Feriye Restaurant has a lot to offer and I can easily recommend a meal there!

Turkish BBQ on the Bosphorus: Ocakbaşı Restaurant Review

01 Oct 2020

The Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul At The Bosphorus has several food and beverage outlets to consider and during my most recent stay (which you can read about here) I had a chance to enjoy two of them. The first I tried was Aqua, which you can read about here and second was their traditional Turkish kebab restaurant called Ocakbaşı. Ocakbaşı Restaurant is located directly on the Bosphorus Strait which offers beautiful panoramic views. Throughout the evening we were taken care of by the wonderful Eyüphan who truly provided top-notch service!

The dinner feast started off with a bit of Turkish Raki which is an anise flavored liquor that is simply delicious. It is clear and when mixed with water turns a pleasant milky white. To accompany this lovely drink we were brought a cheese plate, pickles, and fresh bread. What more could one ask for? Off to a great start!

Up next was the Turkish Meze, which are small side dishes with a variety of flavors. For me, these were the clear winner of the entire evening! The spicy yogurt, known as Atom, was simply magnificent! Some of the others included eggplant, hummus, octopus, turnip salad, and stuffed artichoke hearts. All were really lovely and paired perfectly with Raki. I think I could eat this every day!

Dinner on The Bosphorus: Aqua Restaurant Istanbul

01 Oct 2020

While staying at the Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul At The Bosphorus I had a chance to have an extensive dinner at their Aqua Restaurant. Aqua is the property’s main restaurant and is also where breakfast takes place. The interior of the restaurant was undergoing a renovation that would finish in October, so we sat on the terrace, but probably would have either way. The hotel and restaurant sits directly on the Bosphorus Strait and at any time of day offers a picture perfect setting. Be sure to read my separate in-depth article on the hotel here.

To get the meal started, we went with a few cocktails that jumped out at us including the Botanist and the Bling Bling. My personal favorite was the Botanist which was bursting with flavor and included peppercorns and cucumber which were an interesting combination.

To start with food I ordered the seafood soup, meze platter, and arugula and artichoke salad. This was a perfect way to begin a glorious food adventure. Nearly every bite from the three dishes was fantastic! I loved jumping in between dishes to sample all of the flavors.

Up next was another round of cocktails and I was sure to try their Istanbul Negroni because I am a huge Negroni lover. This was flavored slightly differently than a traditional Negroni, something I would definitely have again!

Soon after the cocktails came the octopus, grouper, and seafood tajine. The octopus was the most tender I’ve ever had in my life, and I have had literally hundreds! I would highly recommend you to try it yourself.

Throughout the evening the service was exceptionally good at Aqua. The food overall was quite tasty as well as the cocktails. These features, matched with the lovely setting, were hard to beat. Istanbul Food Tour with Mind Blowing Flavor!

19 Sep 2020

One of my great passions in life is to learn deeply about a cultures of the world. I do this mainly through meeting locals in the places I go, and by learning deeply about their cuisines. Not only do I want a general overview of the food, but I want to try foods that make my taste buds explode, these tend to really show the soul of a culture. I’ve been enjoying Istanbul for a few weeks, but up until this point, I hadn’t had many dishes that really impressed me until my food tour with Private Istanbul Walking Tours. The company tends to tailor make its tours depending on their customers desires, and with me it was no different. I reached out to the owners Furkan and Derya who were happy to put together a adventure of food and drink that simply rocked my world!

The tour started out with a pickup by Furkan and Derya on the European side of Istanbul.

We then drove to the Asian side and made our first stop at a gorgeous restaurant with stunning patio where we had a traditional Turkish breakfast. They really chose to start with a bang! We sat down and very soon our food started to arrive, which was a massive assortment of items. Very luxurious indeed. I’ve had Turkish breakfast several times and it’s always good, but this was a step above. The quality of each bite made my head explode, exactly what I was after. Not only did everything taste good, the service, and presentation were also top-notch.

Whether it was the Pişi (fresh donuts), the perfectly seasoned Sucuk (dry spiced sausage), the wide variety of unique jams, or the bold local cheeses, each bite made me want to keep eating more and more, and I did.

Our next stop included a stroll which helped us to digest the glorious and massive breakfast feast we had just finished. They chose a lovely nearby park which included a small cafe where we enjoyed a coffee and a lovely chat about our personal history as well as Turkish cultural. This park was absolutely filled to the brim with cute cats. We learned that the people of Turkey are happy to take care of them, and because their lives are so good, behave like super friendly house cats. Istanbul is a paradise for feline lovers!

The next stop was a local everyday Turkish restaurant which focuses on specifically grilled meats. The restaurant has one purpose, extremely rich and tasty food! Each item, once again, was simply fantastic. I feel deeper into bliss with each bite of Çiğ Köfte (Bulgur, onion, tomato paste, hot red pepper paste, urfa biber, salt), the Kelle Paça Çorbası (soup with can include beef or lamb head, feet, and stomach), kebab, or the Katmer dessert (fried layered bread filled with clotted cream and pistachios.). I am definitely going be returning to this place in my days ahead!

To finish the impeccable food tour we made our way to a small sweet shop in Kadıköy. This was yet another glorious place. We tried the caramel sundae and paired it with tea. The cotrasting textures throughout the dessert were a delight for my mouth. Not only did the dessert look lovely, it tasted lovely.

The day went off without a hitch! The customized food tour with Private Istanbul Walking Tours was very close to perfect, and I’ve been on dozens of food tours worldwide, so don’t take this lightely! Wink. Owners Furkan and Derya were great tour guides and I especially liked their insight into Turkish culture, history, and culinary knowledge. Taste of Two Continents Food Tour: Istanbul on Food Review

16 Sep 2020

What is now known as the city of Istanbul, Turkey has been a settlement of humankind for 3,000 years. It was first founded by tribes, colonized by the Greeks, fell to the Roman Empire, and later the Ottoman Empire. With history this deep, you can imagine that Turkish cuisine is quite extensive. Therefore, it was important to me to get help from someone with more knowledge of this immense history. I did some research and discovered Istanbul On Food’s Taste of Two Continents Food Tour. The food tour covers a wide variety of dishes on both the European and Anatolian side of the city. Before I knew it, I was strapped in for a six hour food adventure!

The Taste of Two Continents Food Tour departed at 9:30am near the Istanbul Spice Market, which dates back to 1664 when it opened. Our tour guide was Ayse who was simply lovely! The market felt very special with all the very Turkish items for sale. We made our way through labyrinth of shops and learned a lot along the way. We gathered a few items for a hearty breakfast, and then stopped at a small nearby café to feast. The meal included cheese, olives, eggs, sausages, tea, and more. It was tasty and a great way to start the day!

After our first meal, it was on to the next stop, but not before making our way through several other alleys of the market. The next food stop was a bone marrow soup called Beyran çorbası. This was truly heartwarming. It reminded me of Japanese Tonkotsu Ramen broth, which also cooks down bones creating a rich and deep flavor. Although it looks simple, this soup packed quite a punch!

We made our way out of the market and then to the nearest ferry pier, just a few steps away from the market. We learned a bit about the extensive culinary history of the Ottoman Empire along the way. Over my few weeks in the city, I’ve grown to absolutely adore the ferry boat rides. About 20 minutes later and we were on the Anatolian side.

Our first food stop on the Asian side was at the originator of the vertical Turkish kebab. Passed down from generation to generation, this restaurant served the juiciest kebab meat I had ever had.

We made our way through another market and ended up at a full-blown lunch with lots of Turkish Meze to sample. One of my favorite items of the entire meal was the candied tomato. Although the other dishes were good, the tomato absolutely blew my mind, which was topped with clotted cream. This paired with a little Turkish coffee was one of the best desserts I’ve had in recent memory.

A little bit more walking through some more modern parts of the city and then we made a quick stop for stuffed muscles. Some spicy, some mild, all were tasty and squirted with lemon. Much better than the ones I had tried at a famous shop on the European side.

Even though we were super stuffed, it was time for several types of Turkish Baklava! The green you see in the pictures are pistachios and offer a different flavor than the standard version. Turkey has so many varieties that come with different textures and moisture levels. All of them accompanied with a Turkish tea were just divine.

Taste of Two Continents Food Tour: Istanbul on Food Review Blog Food Istanbul Tours Turkey

Even though I practically needed to be rolled down the street because I was so stuffed, I agreed to try Turkish ice cream and an intestine sandwich. These were both very interesting to say the least!

It was truly a lovely day and I was so excited and happy that I got to try so many different Turkish dishes from this extensive cuisine. Ayse, our tour guide, knew an incredible amount of knowledge on cuisine, culture, and history. This was a well-rounded and well-planned tour that offered a lot of variety. I can easily recommend the Istanbul On Food company!

Polanco Food Tour with Mexican Food Tours

Before arriving to Mexico City, I would never imagined that there were so many neighborhoods to explore. One that I saved until the end of my trip was Polanco. Polanco is one of the most luxurious areas of Mexico City. Polanco is often called the Beverly Hills of Mexico. In between all of the fashion brands are many great restaurants. For guidance on exploring this area, I got in touch with Mexican Food Tours to join their Polanco Food Tour.

The Polanco Food Tour started at a very nice Oaxacan Mexican Restaurant. This was where we learned a lot about the famous Mexican dish called Mole. Mole is basically a Mexican curry and made by cooking down lots of different ingredients including fruit, nuts, chocolate, and spices to form a thick sauce. It is typically served with rice and chicken. At this stop we also got to try Tlayuda with cheese and vegetables. The staff prepared salsa table-side.

We strolled down the street afterward, and made our way to our next stop, which had the best tamale I’ve ever had! This was a fashionable and modern tamale shop with a delightful interior. What made this better than other tamales I’ve had was the texture, amount of flavor, and moistness that was missing from the average ones.

The most “local” stop of the whole trip was the following, which was a taco small taco shop on our way to the park. Their tacos were famous in the city and have been around for decades. I enjoyed mine with a small bottle of beer!

A very interesting stop on the journey was Lincoln Park. Surprisingly the park possesses a statue of Abraham Lincoln that was gifted to Mexico City by the USA. The park is absolutely gorgeous with water features and perfectly manicured greenery. A great place to relax!

We made a few more stops which included another taco in a more modern cantina, as well as a stop in a trendy seafood restaurant. Both were very tasty and delicious and I enjoyed their interiors.

As one would expect, we finished the tour with sweets! One was a Mexican café and chocolate shop. This is where we had a chocolate milk that also had some spices added in. Second was ice cream made with Mamey Sapote which a fruit found in Central America and Cuba, that I had never seen before. It tastes like a cross between a papaya and a strawberry.

In conclusion, the Polanco Food Tour was a delight! It was very conveniently planned and required very little walking. We got to see and eat a lot in a short time which is what I like! It was a very safe and modern area which offered a whole different view of Mexico than I had previously seen. Along the way we did learn a bit about history and culture as well. I would definitely recommend this tour if you prefer the finer things while in Mexico City!
