It might feel like everywhere is crowded these days, and in some places, that’s true – the queues are long, the restaurants are full, the beaches are packed, and it’s not always the kind of break you were hoping for.
But if you’re the kind of person who prefers peace and space and a bit more breathing room, the good news is that there are still ways to travel without the crowds, and there are still places where it doesn’t feel like everyone’s trying to do the same thing at the same time. With that in mind, keep reading to find out more.
Think About Timing First
Not everyone can take a holiday whenever they like, but if you do have some flexibility, try not to travel at peak times – or at least avoid the very middle of them because even travelling a week earlier or later can make a difference.
So instead of August, what about May or June instead? Instead of Christmas week, try early December, or the second week of January. Instead of the school holidays, go just before or after (and that’s an especially good idea if you don’t have children). The point is, the weather’s often just as good, and everything’s a bit quieter and usually a bit cheaper too.
Look Past The Usual Spaces
Some places are busy because they’re brilliant, and you’ll probably still want to visit them, but the trick is to not base your whole trip around them if you’re trying to avoid crowds.
So that’s why it makes sense to pick a spot just outside the main town and look at the less obvious options. Choose a quieter beach, or a smaller village, or a different side of the island that people tend to overlook, and most of the time you’ll still be close enough to visit the bigger sights if you want to, but far enough away to relax when you don’t.
And once you’ve found somewhere a bit more peaceful, everything else starts to feel easier too, and you’ll realise that the place you’ve decided to visit is the right one without the crowds all around you.
Make Travel Part Of The Solution
If you’re trying to avoid crowds, then the way you get around matters as much as where you’re going. Group tours, packed buses, busy flights… all of it adds to the busyness. But if you can travel in a way that gives you space, you’ll enjoy the journey just as much as the destination.
That’s why more people are now looking at superyachts for charter – not for the luxury or the novelty, but because it means you can go at your own pace, visit quieter places, and stay away from the crowds entirely if that’s what you want.
Give Yourself Room To Breathe
You don’t have to do everything, and you definitely don’t have to do it all at once, so leave space in your plan, choose places that suit your mood, and don’t worry if it means skipping a few big-name attractions. They’ll still be there if you want to go back some time.
Sometimes the best way to enjoy a place is to take a step back, and give yourself the kind of trip that actually feels like a break.
