REVIEW: Ethiopian Airlines Business Class CPT to ICN

To begin, after years of dreaming, I finally made it to South Africa, specifically Cape Town. While there, I enjoyed three weeks in the country and did lots of exciting activities, such as a safari where I saw loads of magical animals, went to a penguin beach where I enjoyed the lovely little waddlers, dove with sharks and got my adrenaline rush, visited the Cape of Good Hope which was gorgeous, met lots of great people, and so much more! Nevertheless, after some time, I felt that it was time to get back to Asia, which had recently opened after the COVID pandemic lockdowns had eased.

Undoubtedly, one of my favorite Asian countries is South Korea where I had lived previously, years before. After five years away, I felt it was time to return and enjoy this beautiful country, so I booked my ticket! For the journey, I did lots of research on potential flight routes. After analyzing the flight schedules thoroughly, and much deliberation, I decided to fly with Ethiopian Airlines, a Star Alliance Member.

For one thing, Ethiopian Airlines was actually one that I had never flown with before. Consequently, I was very excited to experience what they had to offer, especially in business class!

Trip Itinerary

To begin, I flew from Cape Town to Addis Ababa on Ethiopian Airlines flight ET 846, which lasted six hours and 25 minutes. This was followed by a 30 minute layover in Addis Ababa. Secondly, I then boarded flight ET 672 for the remaining 11 hour and 40 minute flight to Incheon, South Korea. Boy was I excited!

Upon arrival to the Cape Town airport, I checked in at the Ethiopian Airlines desk smoothly, and then proceeded to the expedited security screening. Certainly I always get excited when I am on my way to a lounge, whether it’s in a luxury hotel or when I’m flying business class. Imagining all of the food and drink is enough to get me all giddy!

Next, I stepped inside the lounge to see a fairly modern and well designed space with numerous comfortable seating options. However, my eyes first went to the sizable buffet spread with both hot and cold dishes. For the pandemic protocols, everything was individually packaged and sealed.

Equally as important as the food, I noticed that there was a vast variety of beverage options on offer. I honestly was impressed by the variety of alcohol that they had in addition to the soft drinks, tea, and coffee. I filled up my plate with a few tasty looking items and found a seat near the window. The high amount of flavor of each dish was certainly impressive. I didn’t expect such deliciousness! After about an hour of rest and relaxation in the lounge, I continued down to the gate to board.

Of course, the anticipation and excitement to take-off was building! I was one of the first to board the Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 787. Once onboard, I enjoyed the color scheme that really did the Ethiopian Airlines branding justice. The seats themselves were red, and the rest of the cabin was grayscale. This contrast was striking and aesthetically pleasing.

Afterwards, I noticed that they matched the Ethiopian Airlines logo with green and yellow blankets. A nice touch indeed.

Overall, the business class cabin was spacious, modern, and the staff were found to be very friendly (I will discuss them in more detail later.)

Along with being stylish, my seat on the Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 787 was very comfortable for the long haul flights. The controls were very responsive (unlike some other airlines that I dealt with recently) and I was able to lie completely flat, which is crucial. Therefore, this enabled me to get a great rest throughout the journey. There were multiple places to store my personal belongings, and charging ports just behind my head.

The provided blanket and pillow were incredibly comfortable as well. The blanket was quite thick and it was perfect for the temperature of the cabin. All in all, I felt it was a dream to relax here for the journey!

Indeed, the business class cabin had a lavatory exclusively for business class travelers. The staff did do a great job at making sure it stayed clean throughout the long journey. That being said, on these Ethiopian Airlines flights, there weren’t many differences in-between the lavatories in business class and economy class.

The first feature that I noticed when I sat down was the Ethiopian Airlines brightly colored amenity kit. The amenity kit had lots of items including a sleeping mask, comb, socks that doubled as slippers, toothbrush, toothpaste, lip balm, hand sanitizer, and more. These items definitely made the journey a lot more comfortable. I wore the sock-slippers the entire trip!

I don’t know what I was thinking, but for some reason I deleted all of my music and videos off of my phone a few days before the flight. What a mistake! Lucky for me, Ethiopian Airlines had a wide variety when it came to entertainment. First of all, they included a pair of high-quality over the ear headphones which were very comfortable and provided great sound quality. I wore them nearly the entire trip and I always felt good!

They had some of my favorite shows including Big Bang Theory, Friends, Anthony Bourdain, and Deadliest Catch. There was also a wide variety of movies, games, music, and informational content. I liked that they had Jazz and Classical mixed albums that were about an hour in length each. These were perfect for sleeping! All in all, this was enough to keep me entertained for the duration, so not having my phone content wasn’t that big of a deal after all.

Food and Beverage

As you know, I take my food and beverage consumption quite seriously. Consequently, even though I had been to Africa a few times, Ethiopian cuisine is not one that I’m well versed in. Therefore, I was very excited to try more during the flights with Ethiopian Airlines. Lucky for me, there was a chance to try some as well as a few other cuisines during the trip.

Leg 1: Cape Town, South Africa to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Just after I first sat down, things got started with the offering of orange juice and brut. Flying always goes better with a bit of a buzz, so I went for the brut and was very happy with it! I even got a few refills before we took off.

Not long after takeoff, we were served our first complete 3-course meal. To start, the beverage cart arrived, which was well stocked with all types of optionss including beers that I’ve never seen before. Unfortunately, those beers will have to wait until my next trip because I went with a South African red wine. I actually enjoyed it a lot and drank it throughout the entire trip. I’m quite picky with my wine so this is definitely something worth taking note of!

The first course then arrived which included a mixed salad, a chickpea dish, meat, cheese, and a selection of bread. Although everything looked simple, I was impressed with the amount of flavor. Especially the salad, which included gherkins. We were off to a good start!

Afterwards, for the main course, I went for the Ethiopian option which had fish, rice, and greens. The sauce that the fish was in was simply to die for. I wasn’t super hungry because I ate so much of the starter, but it was really hard to stop eating. I must note, that the fish itself was good but perhaps a bit too “fishy” for myself. This could just be my personal preference, but I’ll let you decide.

Dessert

Ethiopian Airlines truly knows how to create great desserts. Both of the desserts throughout the journey were fantastic. Seriously! On the first leg was a cake which was super moist and rich. In addition, if you’re not feeling a sweet dessert, it’s possible to enjoy a selection of cheeses instead. Or, live the high life and get both!

Afterwards, the staff came around with digestifs. Consequently, I couldn’t resist getting a Bailey’s with my cup of coffee!

Leg 2: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to Incheon, South Korea

The offering of food and beverage on the second leg of the trip was quite similar to that of the first. Of course, the food options did change but the style and format felt just like the first flight and this consistency was well-noted. I equate this to the fact that Ethiopian Airlines must have a fairly solid training program.

REVIEW: Ethiopian Airlines Business Class CPT to ICN Africa Asia Blog Cape Town Flights Seoul South Africa South Korea

During the second flight, I mixed up my selections a bit to give the various cuisines a full review. Once again the amount of flavor was just right but for this meal, the chicken was slightly dry. Still delightful.

REVIEW: Ethiopian Airlines Business Class CPT to ICN Africa Asia Blog Cape Town Flights Seoul South Africa South Korea

The second dessert was a custard with fruit topping. Once again, the desserts on both flights had just the right amount of sweetness and I enjoyed them thoroughly.

REVIEW: Ethiopian Airlines Business Class CPT to ICN Africa Asia Blog Cape Town Flights Seoul South Africa South Korea

In comparison, the main difference between the flights, was that on the second we were offered a sizeable breakfast just before we landed. There were several options to choose from, including French toast, pancakes, and congee.

The breakfast was served first with fruit, choice of bread, cereal with milk, yogurt, and your beverages choice. I have to say my tastes tend to lean Asian, so I went for the congee. Although the congee looked basic in appearance, just like the other dishes, it was packed with flavor! It came accompanied with two red bean buns. I loved it all!

Service

Moreover, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise that my journey had a stopover. This was because it gave me a chance to review two different Ethiopian Airlines teams of employees during two long-haul flights. In summary, there was a consistent level of service for the duration of each flight, well done Ethiopian Airlines! Obviously, the personality of the individual staff members changed slightly, but overall they were very attentive to my needs. There was never a time where I struggled to get assistance. Which is what I’d expect!

In conclusion, my first experience with Ethiopian Airlines Business Class was very positive. The staff were incredibly warm and it actually got me excited to visit the country of Ethiopia. There was lots of pleasant banter and warm smiles with both flights, which I greatly appreciated. The comfort of the flight itself was also just great. I had just the right amount of food to not be overwhelmed, and also not to be left hungry. Taking this all into consideration, I would have to say that I would be happy to fly with Ethiopian Airlines again, and also happy to recommend that you to do the same. Safe travels!

AirArabia Flight Review: Easily Fly From the UAE to Yerevan

I have visited the United Arab Emirates four times now, and it wasn’t until the most recent visit which I learned there exists another international airport just 30 minutes north of Dubai in Sharjah. Sharjah International Airport is smaller in size and generally offers cheaper flights than flying out of Dubai. For this trip, I was going to Armenia for the first time, and after some research, decided to fly with AirArabia which I had just recently learned about! AirArabia is based out of Sharjah and it was clear because nearly every plane I saw was theirs!

10 Incredibly Useful Tips from a Professional Traveler

14 Jul 2016

Over the last seven years of travel, I have learned a lot. Most of what I’ve learned comes from my own trial and error. With this article, I’m hoping to save you from making some of the same mistakes that I have. This advice has a wide range and will help you in all aspects of travel. Without any more delay, I give to you 10 Incredibly Useful Tips from a Professional Traveler.

1. Use Skyscanner to Book Flights

10 Incredibly Useful Tips from a Professional Traveler Blog Flights Lifestyle

For most of us, the biggest expense of travel comes down to transportation costs. There’s no reason to accept a price that a single airline gives you when there is so much competition in the airline industry. What I’ve found that works best is using an airfare comparison tool. My favorite throughout the years has been Skyscanner. Time and time again I’ve found better deals on Skyscanner than any other airfare compare websites out there. They allow you to compare many different airlines which will give you the best rate, and over time, these can really add up.

I also recommend you to keep your travel dates flexible. This will save tons of cash and this feature is also built right into Skyscanner. It’s easy to compare airfare for different dates allowing you to find the cheapest price. This has been incredibly useful on my recent trip to Asia!

2. Keep a Positive Mindset

10 Incredibly Useful Tips from a Professional Traveler Blog Flights Lifestyle

You can use all of my advice and have the best intentions and things will still go wrong. You cannot always control external circumstances, but you can control the way you react to them. Keep a positive mindset and when things go wrong, look for the good in the experience. Maybe you’ve missed your flight but it gives you an extra day to explore a city. Don’t cry over spilled milk, stay positive and you will always be happy.

3. Backup to the Cloud

10 Incredibly Useful Tips from a Professional Traveler Blog Flights Lifestyle

I talked about backing up physical items but what about digital? Traveling and producing content about experiences is my business. I’m constantly taking tons of photos and videos that I will continuously backup to the cloud. Yes, I do keep external hard drives but backing up remotely will save you in the case that you lose your physical backup.

You might be thinking that you don’t want to pay for a cloud backup service. Trust me I understand, and luckily I’ve found a solution. I have a web host that has unlimited storage. This way I don’t have to pay extra for the backup. I’d already be paying for the web hosting so why not backup my content as well?

4. Document your Trip

10 Incredibly Useful Tips from a Professional Traveler Blog Flights Lifestyle

I’m not saying that you should take yourself out of the moment and be behind your camera the entire trip. What I am saying, is that you should take time to snap a few photos during your experiences. It’s about balance folks. Also, I’ve found it very rewarding to journal about my experiences. I travel so often that I would easily forget what I did if I didn’t have photos to look back on.

5. Don’t Pay ATM Fees

10 Incredibly Useful Tips from a Professional Traveler Blog Flights Lifestyle

I understand that this isn’t possible with all banks. However, I’ve now had a bank account without ATM fees for the least seven years and it’s saved me thousands of dollars. I don’t need to carry tons of cash (except my backup cash) because I know that I can simply withdraw money and not have to pay a fee. This is great because if I ever lose my wallet, I won’t lose my cash also. This saves time and hassle of exchanging currency as well.

6. Keep a Backup

10 Incredibly Useful Tips from a Professional Traveler Blog Flights Lifestyle

Recently, I left my debit card in an ATM. Luckily, I’ve got a great bank that will send a new card quickly. Also, I keep spare cash with me, stashed away for situations like these. Having this extra cash around saved lots of hassle because all I had to do was find a currency exchange and I was on my way.

This goes for other items as well. Make a photocopy of your passport and keep a copy online. I have yet to lose my passport, but if I do, I’m sure this will save me a lot of unneeded stress.

7. Pack Light

10 Incredibly Useful Tips from a Professional Traveler Blog Flights Lifestyle

There’s nothing worse than dragging your heavy luggage for a long distances in a foreign land. Instead, why not minimize your luggage so you can carry it anywhere easily? I started with two giant suitcases 7 years ago. Now, I’m down to traveling continuously with only a carry-on luggage and laptop bag. This saves a lot of stress and makes my travels easier and more efficient. For example, instead of waiting for my luggage to come out at the baggage claim, I can simply walk from the aircraft to the exit while saving valuable time. Be sure to read my article on selling everything and traveling the world for more inspiration!

8. Learn the Language

10 Incredibly Useful Tips from a Professional Traveler Blog Flights Lifestyle

You don’t need to be completely fluent in the local language, but learn the basics. Many people don’t give any effort and expect everyone to speak English. This is rude and inconsiderate. Like I said, you don’t need to know everything but learn the basics. Learn how to say hello, thank you, sorry and other pleasantries. When you try, the people will respect you and it will create a better experience for both you and the locals!

9. Participate in Local Culture

10 Incredibly Useful Tips from a Professional Traveler Blog Flights Lifestyle

Don’t stay in your comfort zone. The whole reason you’re traveling is to learn about something different. For example, instead of eating pizza when you’re in Asia, go find yourself some noodles from a street vendor. You’ll get a glimpse into what it’s like for local people. I guarantee that this will make your travels a lot more interesting! Show genuine interest in things you don’t know about and people will jump in to assist you.

10. Don’t be Afraid to Get Lost

10 Incredibly Useful Tips from a Professional Traveler Blog Flights Lifestyle

When you travel or even just walk around your own city, I’m sure you’ll notice many people with paper maps out looking confused. You’ll never catch me doing this because A. I download Google maps for offline use B. I enjoy wandering around learning about a place and its culture and C. When you look lost, you also make yourself a target for scammers and thieves.

Sure, it’s good to have a few destinations picked out, but don’t be afraid of not finding the most efficient route to get where you’re going. Accept the fact that you’ll do a little extra walking but you’ll also witness things you never would’ve seen if you weren’t open to getting lost. Even when you’re offline, your GPS in your phone will still work. Therefore, if you have an offline map downloaded, you can never really get lost. Conclusion is go get lost!

Conclusion

10 Incredibly Useful Tips from a Professional Traveler Blog Flights Lifestyle

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading the 10 Incredibly Useful Tips from a Professional Traveler. These are things that helped me a lot and will save you a lot of heartache and cash throughout your travels. I hope you can implement these into your next trip and beyond. Happy travels!

Royal Jordanian Airlines Business Class Flight Review (Chicago to Amman)

17 Mar 2016

My Royal Jordanian Airline experience began in the center of the Midwest. For those geographers out there, congratulations! You’re correct, that’s in the center of America. More specifically, in Chicago. My interest in the Middle East has grown a lot recently so I decided to make a trip to Jordan. I feel like westerners tend to think that all of the Middle East is dangerous when in fact there are very safe places to visit such as Jordan. Basically, Jordan is the Switzerland of the region. I’m interested in places that are off the beaten path. They have a lot to offer as a country and a lot of it was a mystery to me so I’m intrigued!

It was only right that I would fly to Jordan business class with Royal Jordanian Airlines! My flight was in the evening at 9:30 pm. Normally, I wouldn’t go to the airport super early but I wanted to check out the business lounge which you can read about in a separate article. Checking-in was a breeze and before I knew it I was in the first class line for security. After stuffing my face for an hour or so in the lounge it was time to board the aircraft. Obviously, Pierre was first to board! My seat was 1k which was the absolute front of the plane. What a great seat!

Just getting acquainted with the functions of seat was a delight. On a 11+ hour flight you definitely want the ability to lay all the way down. Strange enough I was actually seated next to someone who lived not far from my hometown. We had a great conversation on the way but I can’t share it because it’s top secret! Thanks to the schedule of the flight, I was able to get a full night’s sleep, enjoy myself on the plane and wake up full of energy in the late afternoon in Amman.

Now let’s talk about the main event, the service, the food and the plane’s features. Soon after I boarded the plane I was offered an Arabic coffee. They already knew the key to my heart! I must say that the flight attendant that took personal care of me was just perfect and not to mention absolutely beautiful. Every interaction we had she had a big smile on! I’m sure it was only when she talked to me. Wink.

The seats in the first class cabin were very comfortable. You could easily adjust the foot rest and back of the seat to reach your optimal position and eventually lay down while sleep and count sheep.

Pierre was comfortable and ready for take off. Shortly after we were airborne it was time for the first round of food and drinks. The first course was mixed nuts along with a beverage of my choice. I chose a Shiraz from Jordan which was quite nice!

It was then time to settle in a for a bit and watch some of the in-flight entertainment. I must say that I was satisfied with their choices of movies and TV shows. They had a wide variety of brand-new and classic movie titles. I’ve heard a lot of good things about one of them so I started off the flight with the movie Brooklyn.

Not too long into the movie and it was time for dinner. I was already giddy just thinking about it! We started with some smoked salmon, a mixed salad and a bread roll with cheese. I had to go for another glass of wine which paired well with the food. Overall, this course was very tasty, especially the salmon. The feeling of being taken care of while you’re eating and watching a good movie is great. I felt like royalty on Royal Jordanian Airlines. Wink.

While I was looking through the menu I noticed all of the choices of entrées. When it was time for food to be served I assumed that we would order a single dishe that we preferred. However, what happened was that they brought out all of them and we were able to choose whatever we wanted! I went with the beef, some pasta and vegetables to round it all out. It all paired quite well with the wine and the movie!

The main event was soon over and it was time for dessert. They had different cakes including a cheesecake which I ordered and made it complete with some cognac. Super tasty and it put me right to sleep. I slept for a solid 6 to 7 hours and when I awoke there were only a few hours left to go until we reached our destination! Seriously, one if the smoothest flights of my life!
