Why I Stopped Packing Two Pairs of Glasses?

Last updated on July 19th, 2026

Introduction

A couple of years back, I used to carry two pairs of eyewear. One for correcting my vision and the other to protect my eyes from UVA/B rays and glare. This used to be my bog-standard, until one day when I broke my sunglasses just before the early morning flight. I was in the right pickle as I had to keep my eyes from squinting.

While waiting in the lounge for the connecting flight, I locked into a conversation with fellow passengers about the modern-day photochromic technology, which adapts to different lighting conditions and provides comfort to the eyes. Transitions is the brand that leads the market with top-notch photochromic technology.

During our conversation, we came across Specscart, a UK-based eyewear brand that highlights why some “clumsy” travellers, like me, are inclining towards light-adaptive lenses. When I read more about it, the idea stayed with me: Can one pair be functional enough for handling both purposes?

So, my curiosity changed into an experience and the way I pack my eyewear now.

No Time to Swap Eyeglasses

The modern-day travelling doesn’t give you enough space to swap between glasses. My morning starts in a hotel room, I duck into the restaurant nearby, then march toward the open venue. Finally, the day ends in a dimly lit cafe for sipping some beer, before I return to the hotel & hit the sack.

With conventional eyewear, I would switch between glasses, but this routine ended with Transitions lenses. So, the best thing about these lenses is that they remain clear indoors and adjust according to the lighting. When outdoors, they turn dark like sunglasses.

The entire mechanism is quite simple behind it. The XTRActive Transitions lenses react to the visible & UV light. The molecules spread when they’re exposed to the UV rays, giving a darker tint to the lens. The tint reverts to light when indoors, but maintains a protective tint to soothe the eyes impacted by photosensitivity.

For someone like me, who’s always on foot and exploring around, this small convenience makes a big difference.

When Practicality Matters

I am sure that many people have a common opinion about Transitions lenses being futuristic. They aren’t wrong at all.

But I see something simpler – Practicality and convenience. Period.

Personally, I prefer carrying minimal additional stuff for a comfortable trip. Besides, it eliminates the risk of losing premium eyewear and the constant need to take out the case for swapping glasses.

Ultimately, it’s all about setting practical priorities, not aesthetic ones. But it doesn’t mean that fashion should take the backseat.

Transitions GEN S lenses are available in 8 different shades – amethyst, amber, brown, sapphire, emerald, ruby, graphite, and grey. This means you have the liberty to choose the one that matches your style & preference.

UV Protection Isn’t Just for Beaches

This is a widely believed common stereotype among people that UV protection is only needed while chumming at the shoreline or while hiking on the serpentine trails.

It’s a sheer myth. I’ve been to both places. Even though the air remains cool in the hills, the glare remains intense enough to cause vision disorientation and strain.

At this point, I realised that Transitions lenses are not just reacting to the visible light & UV rays, but they’re adjusting to the surroundings without any physical intervention to activate. It is a prime example of why many travellers treat the smooth transition as a daily essential rather than a premium add-on.

Eyewear is Catching Up

Our travel gear has evolved in so many ways! Tickets/boarding passes turned digital, and backpacks became lighter. Similarly, the eyewear game is also getting stronger with Transitions lenses.

They’ve eliminated the need for carrying two different pairs. Considering the practicality, many people like me carry Transitions because we refuse to overpack. Just relying on these light-adaptive lenses the entire day seems to be the bee’s knees.

Carrying Less Is The New Normal

Absolutely! I second that.

Seeing around, I notice people investing in multi-functional eyewear that simplifies their experience rather than complicating it further. With this shifting mindset, it wouldn’t be wrong to admit that Transitions lenses fit best in this category.

As a traveller, I am amazed by the photochromic technology, and the biggest advantage of having Transitions lenses is not worrying about the other pair of glasses. To me, this is a key reason why travel-convenient eyewear has gained huge momentum in the community.

With Transitions lenses, I have the freedom of exploring rather than focusing on what’s inside my bag to keep my eyes safe from fatigue & glare.
