Travel connectivity provider Nomad eSIM analyzed 40 cities to identify the destinations offering the strongest overall food experiences. The research considered food-related search demand, social media activity, restaurant density, Michelin Guide representation, meal affordability and cuisine diversity.
Each destination was assessed relative to its population where appropriate, giving smaller cities a fair chance to compete with the world’s largest capitals.
The result is a varied top 10 featuring everything from Louisiana comfort food and Basque pintxos to Taiwanese street food and Portuguese classics.
1. New Orleans, USA
New Orleans took first place with an overall score of 33.7 out of 40.
The city achieved the highest scores for both global search demand and food-related social media activity. It also performed exceptionally well for restaurant density and Michelin Guide representation.
New Orleans is one of those rare destinations where the food feels inseparable from the city itself. Gumbo, jambalaya, po’boys and beignets reflect a culinary identity shaped by Creole, Cajun, African, French and Spanish influences.
Dining can be expensive, but casual neighborhood restaurants and local favorites make it possible to experience the city’s food culture across different budgets.
2. Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Dubai ranked second with a score of 32.2.
The city received the highest cuisine diversity score in the study and performed strongly for social media activity and restaurant density. With more than 10,000 restaurants, visitors can experience food from around the world without leaving the city.
Dubai’s dining scene ranges from extravagant tasting menus to casual restaurants serving dishes inspired by the many communities that call the city home.
3. San Sebastián, Spain
San Sebastián finished third with 31.8 out of 40.
The compact Basque city earned 39 out of 40 for both food-related search demand and Michelin Guide density. It also received an impressive restaurant density score of 38.
San Sebastián may be known for its Michelin-starred restaurants, but its pintxos bars are just as important to the experience. Visitors can move between venues, ordering one or two small dishes at each stop before continuing through the city.
4. Taipei, Taiwan
Taipei was one of the ranking’s biggest surprises, taking fourth place with a score of 30.95.
The city combined excellent affordability with high restaurant density, strong Michelin Guide representation and impressive cuisine diversity.
Taipei’s night markets make the city particularly rewarding for curious travelers. Dumplings, noodle dishes, scallion pancakes and countless snacks can be sampled without committing to a formal sit-down meal.
5. Copenhagen, Denmark
Copenhagen ranked fifth with an overall score of 30.
The Danish capital performed strongly for global search demand, Michelin Guide representation and cuisine diversity. Its influence on modern Nordic cooking has made it a major destination for serious food travelers.
Dining in Copenhagen can be expensive, but the city’s bakeries, food halls and casual restaurants provide more accessible ways to experience its culinary identity.
6. Bologna, Italy
Bologna placed sixth with a score of 29.95.
The city received high marks for search demand and social media activity, reflecting its international reputation as one of Italy’s great food destinations.
Fresh pasta is central to the experience, with local specialties including tagliatelle al ragù, tortellini and lasagna. Markets, family-run trattorias and specialty food shops make Bologna a city where eating well does not require chasing reservations at famous restaurants.
7. Lyon, France
Lyon ranked seventh with a score of 29 and earned one of the study’s strongest results for Michelin Guide presence.
Often described as one of France’s culinary capitals, Lyon combines fine dining with traditional bouchons serving hearty regional cooking.
Its cuisine diversity score of 40 also shows that the modern city offers far more than classic French food.
8. Singapore
Singapore took eighth place with a score of 28.65.
The city performed especially well for Michelin Guide representation and cuisine diversity. Its food culture reflects Chinese, Malay, Indian and other regional influences.
One of Singapore’s greatest strengths is the ability to move easily between high-end restaurants and affordable hawker centers. Few destinations offer such a wide range of globally recognized food at so many price points.
9. Porto, Portugal
Porto ranked ninth with an overall score of 28.6.
The city performed strongly for global search demand, restaurant density and cuisine diversity. Traditional dishes, fresh seafood and local wines form the foundation of its food scene.
Visitors can sample the famous francesinha, explore food markets or pair regional dishes with port wine beside the Douro River.
10. Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon completed the top 10 with a score of 27.9.
Portugal’s capital received strong results for restaurant density and cuisine diversity. Its food scene combines traditional tascas, seafood restaurants, bakeries and a growing range of modern international venues.
Pastéis de nata may be the city’s most famous export, but dishes such as bacalhau, grilled sardines and bifanas provide plenty more reasons to plan a food-focused visit.
What Makes a Great Food City?
The ranking shows that Michelin stars alone do not define a memorable culinary destination.
New Orleans succeeded because of its distinctive food culture, global popularity and concentration of restaurants. Dubai stood out for variety, while San Sebastián demonstrated how a smaller city can compete through quality and accessibility.
Taipei and Singapore also prove that some of the most rewarding food experiences can be found in markets, hawker centers and casual neighborhood venues rather than formal dining rooms.
When planning a food-focused trip, look for a destination that offers variety across several budgets. Mixing one special restaurant reservation with markets, street food and local establishments often provides a more complete experience of the city.
With Nomad eSIM, travellers can stay connected while exploring new destinations, whether they are searching for Michelin-starred restaurants, uncovering local favourites, translating menus or navigating their way to the next great meal.
