Sometimes, you find a diamond in the rough when you weren’t even looking for one. This is what happened in Ljubljana, Slovenia. While visiting the Grand Hotel Union I was invited to one of their restaurants. It was their Smrekarjev Hram restaurant and that is where I fell in love! In my lifetime, there have only been a handful of meals that have been complete perfection! I must say that this meal in Ljubljana definitely made the list.
First, we can talk about the location. The restaurant is located about 100 meters from the center of the city. You can’t get much more convenient than that folks. Walking in the front door, you enter into a very warm and welcoming space. The staff were unbelievably good at what they do. The restaurant offered food that was not only tasty but also offered flavors I had not experienced before.
We started with a breaded and fried egg with Slovenian prosciutto. What a phenomenal beginning! This was accompanied with a Slovenian brut called Bjana.
I must say that all of the wines, which were locally sourced from several regions in Slovenia, were all out of this world. Each offered flavors that were refreshing and new!
It’s quite admirable that they were pushing the limits of the culinary arts, combining items that are not normally combined. For example, one of the dishes was a granola mixed with foie gras.
After a few more fantastic dishes, it was time dessert. The dessert that stuck in my mind was one that had rocks that were actually filled with chocolate. Tasty!
At the end of the meal, I was very impressed with everything that I consumed. If you’re looking for an all-around fantastic meal I would highly recommend you visit Smrekarjev Hram in Ljubljana, Slovenia! Go, seriously.
