About Upper Peninsula, Michigan
The Upper Peninsula area of the State of Michigan is a region of deep, lush green forests that borders three great lakes. Connected to the lower Peninsula by nothing more than the five-mile-long Mackinac Bridge, which spans the straits below, it’s an area of incredible natural beauty. It’s best known for Mackinac Island, a famously car-free spot of land that has become a beloved vacation destination. The island is the site of the 1887 Grand Hotel and Fort Mackinac, which has stood since the Victorian era.
Places To Stay
Luxe travel to Michigan is only complete with the perfect place to stay. Several old and new hotels and bed and breakfasts are available in the area to suit groups of every size and travelers of every aesthetic preference. Here are our favorites.
-
The Mackinac House
Experience a Mackinac Island welcome and hospitality like nowhere else. Tucked away on the tranquil Market Street, only a block away from downtown, the Mackinac House is the perfect spot for rest and relaxation. Take a stroll or bike ride to see the ferry docks, the Island State Park, or Fort Mackinac, or content yourself with a sunny spot on the expansive porch and a good book. At the same time, you watch the horse-drawn buggies clip-clop past.
-
The Landmark Inn
If something more stately is more to your taste, try the Landmark Hotel in Marquette. The six stories of this beloved hotel hold many stories and the splendor of years gone by. The Landmark is an AAA Diamond-rated location and simply drips dignified charm. The staff are warm and incredibly good at their jobs: the service at the Landmark is beyond first-rate.
-
Munising Alger Falls
Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the area when you stay in one of the cabins at Alger Falls. The accommodation at Munising Alger Falls is as unique as the area in which it resides. The Alger Falls is on the hotel’s property, so nature is just a step away here. For those looking for a little solitude, some of the units are set slightly further away from the main road to give more of a wilderness experience. The accommodation is available year-round and offers incredible nature experiences in both warm and cold weather.
Things To Do
-
Mackinaw City Sunset Cruise
Watch the breathtaking sunset from the water when you take your Mackinaw City Sunset Cruise. Sail around Lake Michigan and discover the joy of seeing this gorgeous region from a different perspective. You’ll depart from Mackinaw City, and the cruise will take you under Mackinac Bridge and around the picturesque Mackinac Island. Sip a glass of champagne from the bar as you watch the sun sink beneath the lake’s surface.
-
Mackinac Island State Park
Exploring stunning natural surroundings is the ultimate luxury, and Mackinac Island State Park is about as stunning as it gets. Visit the park on foot and get up close and personal with the local flora and fauna, or charter a boat to take you around the island for a view from the deck. Limestone bluffs, mystical and glittering geological formations, verdant forests, clear water: there’s no place like it. All kinds of automobiles have been banned on the island since 1898, so the noise and pollution that comes with them never took hold in this gorgeous state park. Don’t forget to visit the towering Arch Road, a natural formation along the park’s cliffs. This seemingly suspended arch towers to a height of 149 feet in the air, and the views are simply mesmerizing.

Explore Quaint Mackinac Island
Though this is a free activity, not including any souvenirs you may purchase or meals you may devour, there’s nothing like seeing someplace like no place you’ve been before. Allow yourself a little free time to explore the one and only Mackinac Island. Take a step back in time to an island where no cars have been allowed for almost two centuries now, and the most common ways to move around are on foot, by bicycle, or by horse-drawn carriage. Since the island is so close to waters teeming with life, there’s a lot of “pier to plate” dining to be had at many of the fine eateries you’ll pass on your travels: try the Pink Pony Bar and Grill or the Watercolor Cafe. Rent a bike and ride around town or see the Victorian-era Fort Mackinac. Shop for souvenirs or trinkets on Main Street in stores like Canvas and Paddle or Artist’s Market of Mackinac Island.
