Banyan Tree Hotel Bangkok: Serenity Club Suite Review

29 Apr 2018

My third Banyan Tree Hotel visit was just recently at their Bangkok property. Previously I had visited the Banyan Tree Phuket and Banyan Tree Yangshuo. The Banyan Tree Bangkok is located in the financial district, on Sathorn Road. The Banyan Tree Bangkok is famous for its incredibly elevated Moon Bar and Vertigo restaurant, which you can read about in this article.

I was able to secure a Banyan Tree Serenity Club Suite, so I checked in at the 19th floor club lounge. This was very VIP style with great service from the beginning. We were offered a welcome drink as well as beautiful Thai flowers. These smelled so great, how delightful!

It was not long before we learned that our suite was ready and located on the 55th floor of the Banyan Tree Bangkok Hotel. We were escorted to our room by the staff. The room was lengthy and had multiple windows to enjoy the impeccable view of Bangkok (the large green area is Lumphini park!) All the Banyan Tree branded amenities were in place including beautiful robes, slippers and those cute little water bottle covers.

The spacious living room was incredibly comfortable and had a sofa that was massive. The room also featured a great desk, perfect for writing articles. Wink wink. The staff were good at always refilling coffee capsules and bottles of water throughout the stay.

In the bathroom, and I found a Japanese-style toilet which makes me extra happy. There was also a beautiful bathtub that was quite photogenic. Lots of great toiletries, including mouth-wash and hair brush could also be found.

The Banyan Tree Club Lounge offers a very extensive breakfast buffet, afternoon tea, a wide selection of evening beverages and food. The free flow of beer is definitely unique to the Banyan Tree brand and something to take note of! Also the afternoon tea begins at noon, giving guests extra time to enjoy the food and drinks. The offering of the Banyan Tree Club Lounge is truly impressive. There’s almost no reason to leave the hotel when the food was so good. We actually didn’t leave the property for our entire stay because we enjoyed ourselves so much!

I mentioned earlier this property has glorious food and beverage outlets, I tried Vertigo Rooftop Restaurant and Saffron Thai Restaurant. I’ve written about both more extensively in separate articles (click the restaurant names above.) They also have multiple sky bars including Saffron Sky Garden which is a bit more laid back than the famous Moon Bar which is practically always buzzing!

The Banyan Tree brand is known for having great spas. I was very excited to get a massage, get the full details in this article.

On the same floor as the spa, you’ll find the pool, gym, steam room, small cafe and sauna. The gym has great quality equipment and was never busy. There is also a large yoga room. Piping hot steam rooms and saunas near the stairs to the pool. I’m in heaven.

Vertigo Bangkok Review: The Famous Restaurant in the Sky

29 Apr 2018

About 5 years ago, I’ve visited Moon Bar, at the top of Banyan Tree Hotel. At that time I just had a drink and enjoyed the remarkable view. Now, several years later, I have returned to eat at Vertigo, the restaurant right next to Moon Bar.

First and foremost, this view is one of the best in Bangkok. Being on the 60th floor puts you a bit higher than most of the Bangkok skyline. There seems to always be a magical sensation on a roof-top.

There was a special menu by visiting chef Bobby Chinn the night we visited. The servers were warm and very personal right from the start. We started off with the chef’s oyster brulee which had sautéed spinach, cauliflower puree and sake sabayon.

The next course included three small item including a crab cake, a Vietnamese inspired spring roll and crab corn espresso. The crab cake was definitely my favorite!

When things got truly exciting were when the tropical seafood ceviche arrived. It had a unique presentation, bursting out of the coconut shell.

The first few courses came in rapid-fire mode, so we took a short break and enjoyed our next glass of wine, a 2013 Craggy Range Pinot Noir and then had a pallet cleansing sorbet.

It was time for the main course, I chose the Jasmine Tea Smoked Duck Breast. The duck had enjoyable flavor, but could’ve been slightly more tender.

Finally, time for the Morou Chocolate Pudding with vanilla bourbon ice cream. I’m not sure why this was called a pudding, it was more of chocolate lava cake. Whatever you call it, it was tasty. The staff were great and at this point brought over a few rounds of special Banyan Tree cocktails for us to enjoy! Probably my favorite part of dessert!

Banyan Tree Spa Review: Terrific Massage in Bangkok

29 Apr 2018

If you haven’t already, make sure you read about my stay at the Banyan Tree Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand. While at the property, I experienced a massage at their Banyan Tree Spa, located on the 21st floor of the hotel.

Banyan Tree Spa Review: Terrific Massage in Bangkok Asia Bangkok Blog Spas Thailand

I was very familiar with this area of the property because it also features the gym, steam rooms, saunas and pool. We were greeted politely and offered a menu of treatments and welcome drink. I went with the deep tissue massage and my partner went with the gentle touch massage.

We were guided down a spiral staircase, entering the belly of the beast. The first part that caught my attention was the beautiful bamboo sculpture in center of the spa.

We were then taken down the corridor to our treatment room. Once inside, I realized part of the reason why the spa has received so many awards. Banyan Tree put some serious effort into designing such glorious treatment rooms. Perfect for a king or queen, this treatment room was grandiose!

My therapist was small but her massage was powerful. It’s called a deep tissue massage for a reason, and that’s exactly what I got. The time flew by and before I knew it were were back upstairs drinking delicious hot tea and eating yogurt with fruit.

The Banyan Tree Spa deserves all of the awards it has received. The spa did not miss a beat in any of its offering, including it’s impressive service, design and quality of treatment. Saffron Restaurant Review: Outstanding Thai Food in Bangkok

29 Apr 2018

Thai cuisine is one that fits my taste buds perfectly. Ever since I first visited Bangkok, back in 2009, the food has always excited me. Over the years, I’ve spent lots of time exploring all of the ins and outs of the Thai cuisine and culture. I tend to prefer stronger, bold flavors and Thailand has a lot of them. Every time I have a chance to visit a high-end Thai restaurant, I get very excited. This time around it was the Saffron restaurant at the Banyan Tree Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand.

When I entered the dining room I knew I was in for a treat. Practically every seat inside of the Saffron restaurant had a beautiful view of the Bangkok skyline. The restaurant offers a very intimate setting.

Saffron Restaurant Review: Outstanding Thai Food in Bangkok Asia Bangkok Blog Food Thailand

For the meal, we went with the Siamese Set Tasting Menu. The very first bites to arrive were two types of crackers, with three different dips. Two of them were spicy and one not so much, but all three were incredibly lovely and a sign of what was to come. The spiciest was my favorite!

Saffron Restaurant Review: Outstanding Thai Food in Bangkok Asia Bangkok Blog Food Thailand

We next moved on to another amuse bouche, which was a small spring roll and fruit salad. Once again a flavor explosion, quickly I was falling in love with Saffron.

The first item on the menu had now arrived, crispy squid with garlic pepper and squid ink sauce. This dish is still burned into my memory, covered in chili and perfectly balanced in flavor. I couldn’t get enough of this, and consumed it all within a few seconds.

Immediately after, was a seared salmon with coriander mint salad accompanied with crispy pork and spicy citrus dressing. You got me at spicy citrus dressing! I’m a big fan of the sour and spicy flavors that Thai food offers. These two dishes were accompanied with 2016 Convento Viejo Sauvignon Blanc.

This meal was off to a great start and already hit a few home-runs! Now it was time for the Saffron restaurant’s Tom Yum. Hands down, this was one of the top Tom Yums I have ever had in my life! This was the holy grail, that all others should be trying to reach. This is a soup to be proud of, and one that exemplifies beautiful Thai cuisine. Absolutely amazing!

At this point we had a little break, as we had fully stuffed ourselves up until this point, so we were served a sorbet to clear our palates. The main courses were Wok Tossed Chicken with cashew nuts, sweet chili paste and oyster sauce and a Grilled Seabass Green Curry with eggplant, basil and beef. The chicken took the gold metal here. It was super moist and the sauce that accompanied it was perfect. They even had several types of rice to choose from.

Finished off the evening with Jelly and Lychee ice cream. Being stuffed already, it was great to have a dessert that wasn’t too heavy.

The meal was over and my stomach was incredibly happy! Without a doubt this was one of the top Thai meals that I have ever had. Throughout the meal, the staff were incredibly attentive and offered a true fine dining experience. You cannot lose if you visit the Saffron Restaurant at the Banyan Tree Hotel in Bangkok!

The Siam Hotel Review: Quaint Luxury in Bangkok

25 Apr 2018

Over the years, I have worked my way through practically all of the high-end hotels in Bangkok, Thailand. The Siam Hotel is ranked very highly and is quite well known in the area, so I was very excited to take the opportunity to visit this year! The property is located along the Chao Phraya River, in a relaxed part of the city.

We arrived at The Siam early in the afternoon to be greeted by the pleasant staff who escorted us inside for our check-in process. We were then escorted to our room on the third floor by our butler. Upon arrival, we were served a passion fruit juice welcome drink.

On the way to our room, I noticed many beautiful aspects of the property, including the large water feature in the center. The Siam Hotel basically has a forest and a pond inside of it. Can’t say I see this every day!

When I opened the door to my room, I first entered a comfortable living room area. In the living room you will find a coffee machine, sofa, minibar and television. Once you pass through the living room, the ceiling rises to approximately double that of the first room, to a very spacious bedroom. Lots of artwork throughout the space, and two bicycles were mounted on the walls.

In the back of the bedroom, you’ll find a wide desk and two separate closets.

It was time to check out the rest of this expansive property! We first made our way down to the pool, to get there, we walked through long corridors, tunnels made of greenery, and much more. As you walk around the property, it makes you feel that you’re walking around a private palace.

The pool is a long lap pool that sits alongside the river. The pool was a great place to enjoy the sunset and of course, take a dip.

Just next to pool, you’ll find The Siam’s restaurant, where the breakfast takes place. The breakfast was made up of a small continental breakfast buffet, and a fairly extensive a la carte menu complete with Thai and Western options. They certainly know how to plate beautiful food, with everything also being quite tasty.

The Siam Hotel also boasts a fairly substantial fitness center. At the fitness center, you will find several pieces of cardio equipment, weight machines, free weights and a full-sized boxing ring. However, The Siam has no steam room, sauna or relaxation areas inside of the locker rooms.

The Siam Hotel Review: Quaint Luxury in Bangkok Asia Bangkok Blog Hotels Thailand

My stay at The Siam Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand was short and mostly sweet. It’s easy to see why many visitors are impressed with the design of the property. I liked the calmness of the area, the design of the property, the food and the service. My major critiques were the lack of air conditioning or fans in a few of the public areas, not having a steam room or sauna, limited breakfast buffet and lack of ammenities considering the price-point. If your main focus is the design of your hotel, you should definitely check out The Siam in Bangkok, Thailand!

VIE Mgallery Hotel Review: Boutique Luxury in Bangkok, Thailand

23 Apr 2018

My next stay on my most recent trip to Bangkok, was at the VIE Mgallery Hotel by Sofitel. This hotel holds a special place in my heart because nearly a decade ago, I lived across the street while I was an exchange student in Bangkok, Thailand. What I remember about the property most from back then was its incredible pool that can be seen from the street below. I never actually visited the property until this time around and I was very excited!

I was under the impression that the property had been renovated because everything looks so fresh but turns out this wasn’t the case. I suppose its timeless style is to be thanked for this! The front-desk staff were gracious in greeting us and quickly checked us in and escorted us up to our 22nd floor VIE Corner Suite.

From the suite we had both views of the north and west. All areas of the suite were incredibly spacious. The large living room had seating for about a dozen people so bring your party hats. I spent a lot of time in the living room working at the desk with comfortable office chairs. It was a welcomed sight to see a couple pastries for our welcome gift and piece of chocolate cake! Thanks VIE staff!

From my window you can see down to the rooftop pool which is on the same level as fitness center. Beautiful in both day and night!

The VIE hotel does not have an club lounge but this didn’t bother me because they have a great coffee machine in the room. I love to work and enjoy a smooth cup of coffee. Bliss.

The bedroom was practically equally as large as the living room. The whole suite incorporated Thai features into its design. You’ll notice the Thai triangular pillows on the sofa.

The restroom had what you would expect, including a partitioned shower, toilet and generous bathtub.

The VIE Hotel rooftop pool is connected to the main building by footbridge. A very impressive design to say the least. The gym is ran by a private company but facilities were of a desirable quality. There is a steam room in the women’s locker room and a sauna in the men’s. Don’t forget to read about their VIE Spa on the same floor!

The VIE Mgallery Hotel breakfast occurred in La Vie restaurant. La Vie restaurant is a fine dining French restaurant in the evening and morphs its personality in the daytime. Be sure to read about my incredible lunch and dinner at La Vie restaurant in a separate article. The breakfast was flawless. All of the food items were of the highest quality and possess the exact flavor profile that I appreciated most. There is a wide selection of Asian and Western items for your choosing. The staff were incredibly attentive during breakfast, lunch and dinner. For a medium sized dining room the amount of food was impressive!

From start to finish, I enjoyed my time immensely at the VIE Mgallery Hotel. Be sure to read about Bangkok’s Hotel Muse, which is also an Mgallery property. VIE Hotel was very consistent with the level of service. VIE Hotel really excels in their food and beverage offering, as almost everything I bit into was incredibly tasty! Don’t forget to checkout their Japanese restaurant called YTSB and their French restaurant La Vie. The location, design, facilities and service were all fantastic as well putting this fine property high on my list of hotels in Bangkok. Without a doubt, I’d highly recommend a stay at VIE Mgallery Hotel by Sofitel in Bangkok, Thailand!

YTSB Restaurant Review: Quality Japanese Food in Bangkok

23 Apr 2018

I am a huge fan for Japanese cuisine so I was very excited to try the Yellowtail Sushi Bar at VIE Hotel in Bangkok. On my latest trip I stayed at the hotel, which you can read about here. On our last day, we had a lunch at YTSB.

There are few seating options including at the sushi bar, small and large tables and booths, we went for a booth. I liked the Japanese influenced design throughout the dining room.

We started off with a small bottle of Junmai Ginjo Kikusui sake which went down quite smooth. The chef put together a tasting menu for us, and began with a soft shelled crab salad. The salad was bursting with flavor and a great way to start off the meal!

The next course was a bowl of sashimi. Normally, I’m a huge tuna fan but out of this bowl, my favorite was the mackerel and the yellowtail. The runner-up was definitely the scallop with salmon roe. The meal was off and running and everything was great! Perhaps the sake helped a bit.

In contrast to the raw fish we then had a cooked yellowtail. Just like La Vie restaurant, the fish was cooked perfectly. If you’re interested in all around great food, definitely read about Le Vie, which is another one of the hotels magnificent restaurants.

To finish up this lovely afternoon, we were offered five pieces of sushi each. Each piece of sushi was great and got better with each piece. Luckily I started on the right side! Just the right amount of wasabi and seasoning to really bring out the flavors of the fish, but not too much to overpower the natural flavor. Perfect.

To finish off the meal we had dessert which was a matcha pudding and a fresh slice of cantaloupe. I love you matcha!

Throughout our meal, the staff were always present, refilling our sake and water classes. They provided a friendly and quality experience throughout the meal. The Japanese food at the YTSB restaurant is definitely above average! A majority of the fish was great, but a small minority could have been improved slightly. All in all, it was a fantastic meal at the YTSB Japanese restaurant at VIE hotel in Bangkok, Thailand!
