Matcha Kyoto Green Tea Tour Review: Arigato Japan

Last updated on November 8th, 2024

I have been on multiple Arigato Japan tours because they’re so fun and interesting. After moving from Tokyo to Osaka, I made a couple trips to Kyoto which is Japan’s old capital, and rich in culture. During my second Kyoto visit I joined the Matcha Kyoto Green Tea Tour because I love Japanese food, culture, and of course, matcha!

After meeting at the train station, we paid a visit to a nearby shrine and learned some tidbits about Japanese culture along the way.

After the shrine visit, it was already time for lunch, which I’m always ready for! We went to a very local cha-soba (green tea soba) shop along the river. Even though the weather was hot, I decided to go for the hot soba and let me tell you, I was so happy I did! This was the best soba I’ve ever had, hands-down. It was incredibly flavorful, served with tempura and a few more perfect side dishes! So good.

We then crossed the bridge and headed over to a beautiful Buddhist temple. This temple actually appears on the ¥10 coin and originally opened in 998 AD. We toured around the museum just next-door to learn more about this beautiful structure.

It was incredibly hot during the tour so I was very excited that the next stop was for matcha ice cream. I’m not exaggerating when I say this was the best matcha ice cream I’ve ever had! It was a bit more viscous then I’ve experienced in the past and was sprinkled with matcha powder. I almost went for seconds!

The final stop for the tour was for a tea experience at a tea shop that first opened during the Tensho Era (March 7, 1131 – September 28, 1132.) We first visited their in-house museum and learned that several hundred years ago this highly valuable tea was commonly walked from Tokyo to Kyoto, which took about 2.5 weeks. We then got to grind the tea ourselves into matcha before enjoying it with a lovely treat. The whole experience was really eye-opening and enjoyable! The perfect Kyoto experience.

Once again, I was incredibly pleased with yet another Arigato Japan tour experience. The Matcha Kyoto Green Tea Tour definitely should be added to your list when you’re visiting Kyoto. Our tour guide was great throughout the day and knew a lot of fun facts. The food was magnificent, and the tea experience was very interesting as well. In conclusion, the Matcha Kyoto Green Tea Tour with Arigato Japan shouldn’t be missed!
