Dear Lord! Have you ever had a meal that knocks your socks right off? Have you ever been introduced to a new cuisine and every bite tasted perfect? This doesn’t happen often but it happened in Sofia, Bulgaria at the Hadjidraganov’s Houses restaurant. The restaurant is located on the north side of the city. It is styled like a traditional Bulgarian home. It looks like someone moved the house right out of the countryside and plopped it right down in the middle of the city.
We started our meal with a traditional Bulgarian shopska salad. It was basically a small amount of vegetables layered in a large amount of cheese. Daddy likes. The cheese was amazing and it reminded me of feta because it was salty. It was a ginormous portion which we were told was normal for Bulgaria. I tried to pace myself but it tasted so good I couldn’t stop eating!
I guess the alcohol was getting to my head because I forgot to mention we started with some Bulgarian cognac which is called Rakia. It was very strong and not for the faint of heart. Right after the Rakia we jumped into some Bulgarian wine which possessed a flavor I have never tasted before.
What better way to try a new cuisine then order a bunch of traditional meat? For this we went with a wide assortment. We basically killed an entire ecosystem and put it on our table. We were highly recommended the lamb because it was super fresh. Butchered 10 minutes earlier. I’m joking. We also got a sword of various meats. The sword was on a wooden platter of more salad and fries. Fries!
Every bit of meat simply melted in our mouths. All of it was seasoned perfectly and I must admit that I fell in love. As you can see from the photos, it was a ton of food.
We gorged ourselves on this perfect food. When it was time to have more we quickly went for the opportunity. No it wasn’t another entrée, it was time for dessert. For this we went with a very sweet orange cake and an order of goat yogurt with berries. Pro tip: eat a bite of both desserts to have the experience of a lifetime!
As I said, this is not a common occurrence. Normally, when I’m introduced to a new cuisine there are things I don’t like. However, with this meal, I loved every single item that we ordered. If you have a chance to go to Sofia, Bulgaria then you absolutely must try the Hadjidraganov’s Houses restaurant!
