In my latest article on the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Bangkok, I spoke about my new experiences during my most recent stay. One of these new experiences, was a dinner at their Sala Rim Naam restaurant. They serve authentic Thai food as well as offering a classical Thai dance show which is performed every night. To get to the restaurant, you’ll most likely need to take a shuttle boat from the hotel or from the boat pier located below Saphan Taksin BTS station. Don’t worry, it’s very near only taking about five minutes.
Once you arrive, you’ll enter into their giant dining room which is very traditional in it’s styling. There are two seating areas, one is with western style tables and chairs and the other appears to be Thai style but your legs can extend under the table as well. No sore legs found here!
We arrived before the show and started out with some cocktails and appetizers. Most were quite delicious. It’s important to note that even though the food is authentic, some of the dishes are not the most common. For example, even though I’ve lived in Thailand for 3 years I had not tried a majority of the dishes served and I’ve eaten in almost everything. One dish that they served which is very common in Thailand is green curry.
Anyways, back to the story. After the enjoying appetizers and first round of cocktails, the show was set to begin. I was ready for a traditional Thai dance show but this was a lot more than what I bargained for. Every time we thought it was over there would be another act. It was definitely very entertaining and exciting! So many different dance styles and outfits – my head was spinning! Bravo!
Overall, I did enjoy the food. As a whole, the meal was great especially paired with the show. I must say that the Thai show is their major selling point for the evening. The service was fantastic. Our server was always there to explain parts of the menu and was very attentive during our meal. All in all, I had a great experience at the Sala Rim Naam and I’m sure that if you’re visiting Thailand, especially for the first time, the show will knock your socks off!
