The Shangri-La hotel in Bangkok is located very near the Saphan Taksin BTS station and pier. This where you can catch riverboats to go all over Bangkok. The property has been here for some time and they have chosen to keep it very traditional. There are two wings of the property, one is the larger main Shangri-La wing and the other is a quieter more peaceful Krungthep wing.

After checking in, I headed up to the 19th floor to see what my deluxe room had to offer. This was indeed very old school Thai style luxury. A giant Thai mural painted headboard was the primary focus of the design. Near the window was a sofa and then in the bathroom there was a shower stall and bath tub. The only thing missing was a coffee machine.

After getting a good night’s sleep, I headed down to the gym on the third floor which looks out over the river, the pool and their Salathip restaurant. The gym is quite massive, ensuring you will have no problem finding available equipment to use. In the changing room, you will find a large hot tub, a steam room and a sauna. Very high quality facilities all around. A great place to start the day!

After my workout, I cleaned myself up and went to breakfast. They have breakfast on the ground floor and in the Horizon club lounge on the 24th floor. I enjoyed my breakfast with an amazing view of the Chao Phraya River. The Horizon club lounge offers a wide assortment of breakfast items from all over the globe. You can order a few options à la carte and then choose from their buffet as well. This lounge was really quite impressive in both its design, river view and offering. In additional to breakfast, you can expect the usual afternoon tea and evening food and drinks as well.

The property also features several food and beverage outlets. One that I was able to sample was Salathip restaurant which I mentioned earlier. The restaurant is located right on the river which provides a great ambiance. During dinner they offer a traditional Thai dance show which can be interesting if you haven’t seen it before.

The hotels located along the river generally feel more like resorts, especially the Shangri-La. This feeling is achieved with the fact that the hotel is so massive and features a very large outdoor pool. Everyday I would look down to see it packed with people (except when I captured the photo right after the rain.)

At the end of the day, I did end up enjoying my stay at the Shangri-La in Bangkok, Thailand. My stay started rocky but got better over time. Lucky for you, a normal hotel guest will not have to deal with the same unpleasant marketing staff I did. Therefore, if you’re looking for a large, classic and luxurious hotel along the river, then I’m quite certain you will enjoy your time at the Shangri-La hotel in Bangkok!
