Best Hotel In Manila: The Peninsula Hotel Review

The Peninsula Hotels is a luxury hotel brand which has a strong focus on quality. From the moment I pulled into the driveway at The Peninsula Manila, I knew that I was going to have a fantastic experience. With my first step out of the car, I immediately heard “Welcome Mr. Blake” and was ushered into the lobby where my jaw dropped.

The Peninsula Manila’s lobby is absolutely massive, and screams luxury. This is clearly the place to be and everyone around the city seemed to be very aware of it. The lobby alone is worth a visit. In the evenings they have live orchestra music. I loved that it’s open 24 hours a day even though I’m not personally a night owl. Whether it’s breakfast, afternoon tea, or dinner, there’s always a reason to be at The Peninsula Manila’s lobby.

Back to my check in process, which happened in my suite on the 11th floor. I was escorted to the room by the very courteous staff. Just like the lobby, the suite had a timeless design and focused on quality everything. In the large living room there were sofas, chairs, a dining room table, a fully stocked tea and coffee station, half bathroom, and a tasty welcome amenity of fruits and sweets! I felt like I was at my mansion, I mean, at my home.

The bedroom was approximately the same size as the living room, very spacious indeed. There was a large desk, comfortable bedding, lounge chair, and a great view both day and night! Look at these photos! Both the living room and bedroom had control stations for the air conditioning and lights which made my life easy throughout my stay.

The full bathroom and walk-in closet were also very spacious. The bathroom featured a single sink, large bathtub, shower stall, and separate toilet stall. I liked that they used shavers with three blades and not the cheap ones. Well done Peninsula Manila! I love you, please marry me.

The hotel has two towers. My room was not in the same tower as the club lounge so I had to go down the elevator, walk across the lobby, then go back up another elevator in the other tower to get to the fourth floor club lounge. The trek was worth it each time and gave me a chance to revel in the beautiful lobby as I passed through. The Peninsula Manila’s Club Lounge offers breakfast, afternoon tea and evening food and drinks from 18:00 to 20:00.

The service and quality of food was incredibly consistent at the club lounge! Some of the most attentive, and courteous service I’ve ever been able to enjoy ever, and I’ve reviewed 215 luxury hotels worldwide at the time of writing this. Everything I ate was very delightful and I loved trying the local Filipino dishes, the Sisig was my favorite, thanks Chef Philip for your kindness! The cozy atmosphere, impeccable service, and tasty food and drink make this a top-notch club lounge where you’ll never be left hungry!

The gym looks out over the pool and has lots of quality and modern equipment to choose from. Inside the respective male and female locker rooms, you’ll find a steam room and dry sauna.

There are lots of venues to enjoy breakfast at The Peninsula Manila. For my stay I had breakfast in the room and the gorgeous lobby. Since it was my first trip to the Philippines, I focused on the local Filipino Cuisine and tried milk fish, Filipino style corned beef hash, beef tapas, dried fish, Longaniza (Filipino sausage), all with garlic rice. I was pleasantly surprised that Filipino food matched my flavor preferences of sour, and spicy. No matter where I ate, or what I ate, it all tasted great!

During the stay, I enjoyed afternoon tea in the lobby. If you have a chance, spend time in this lobby, even if it’s only for a coffee, it’s seriously worth the visit. The beauty of the lobby matched with the top-notch Peninsula Manila service is a recipe for success. I went for the Bain De Roses tea!

Throughout my stay there were little personal touches that put The Peninsula Manila far ahead of the competition. Even though it was a week after my birthday, I was treated to a birthday cake, balloons and sung happy birthday by the staff. There was always a lovely turn-down amenity to look forward to, whether it was a gin and tonic kit, chocolate, or other treats! They even gave me small cable straps to contain my cords and a glasses cleaning kit! To top it off, they took of photo during my birthday greeting and put it in a picture frame and delivered it to me. I really didn’t want to leave!

The Peninsula Manila lived up to all of the hype and actually over-delivered time and time again. This hotel is one of the top hotels of my life. At the end of the day, the fact that every Peninsula Manila employee was so delightful made this property truly exceptional. My stay at The Peninsula Manila Hotel was flawless, and I can highly recommend absolutely everyone to visit whether it’s a stay or just a tea in the lobby!

Best Food Tour in Taipei: Taipei Eats Review

27 Apr 2019

Food tours tend to be one of my favorite ways to explore a city’s cuisine, so I sought out Taipei Eats for their Daodaxioqing Food Tour. Taipei eats has been operating in Taipei for about five years and really know how to put together a delicious and enjoyable tour!

After a quick introduction at the meeting point, we were soon on the move to explore food stalls nearby. The first really exciting bite was a soupy congee accompanied with pork belly and octopus. Tour guests have some freedom to make their own decisions during the tour. which was a nice touch. I must say this was the best congee I’ve ever had in my life! Soupier than usual, but just the right balance of flavor and texture.

The area surrounding the stalls was peaceful with a nearby temple that we paid a quick visit to, to learn about some local customs. Soon after, we were back to food and drink with some alcohol that was half medicinal and half rice wine. The group of local old men loved that I wanted to try it. Alcohol makes food tours way better, especially in the beginning. Good choice Taipei Eats!

Now I had a buzz and was in my happy place. I got to get even more buzzed with a nice stop at a beetle nut shop! Best tour ever! The food and drink also got better and better. There were about 10 different stops in total. The Taipei Eats guide was very knowledgeable about Taiwanese culture and history which I found very interesting because it was only my second visit to the country.

Another very memorable stop was the fish ball shop that originally opened in 1950 by a Chinese immigrant. These were some of the best fish balls I’ve ever had, even though I’ve lived in Southeast Asia for many years. I might have enjoyed them more because they came with chili oil, Taiwanese sushi, and Taiwanese style cabbage.

For one dessert we got to try Taiwanese shaved almond flavored milk ice, which was light as snow. If it’s your first time, I’d recommend choosing to have it with red beans.

Basically, throughout the tour, the dishes just kept coming and coming. I enjoyed how they seemed to get more and more exciting. Learning about Taiwan and its culture was very enjoyable as well. The overall experience was well organized and something I would gladly try again, I applaud Taipei Eats! If you’re in Taipei, be sure to seek out a Taipei Eats Food Tour!

Shangri-La’s Far Eastern Plaza Hotel Review: Top-Notch in Taipei

24 Apr 2019

One of my favorite hospitality brands on earth is Shangri-La! On my recent trip to Taipei, Taiwan, I had the opportunity to stay at the Shangri-La’s Far Eastern Plaza Hotel. As the name would suggest, the property is located in southeastern corner of the city, only a few minute walk from Liuzhangli station.

Upon arrival, I received a welcome ginger tea and then was ushered to the Horizon Club Lounge on the 36th floor to complete the check-in process!

The room featured breathtaking views of Taipei 101, the rest of the city, and some mountains not too far away. I think it’s safe to say that all views from this property are absolutely incredible. I was able to capture some gorgeous photos both day and night.

My room on the 33rd floor was incredibly spacious. Apparently, the property had seen a recent remodel. I enjoyed the modern features including updated light controls along the bedside, a Bose Bluetooth Speaker, capsule coffee machine, and electronic toilet. There was a large walk in closet and the bathroom had a bathtub, shower and great toiletries. This being said, I was slightly surprised to see manual pull window shades. There was a large working desk that had a surprising amount of office supplies. Actually, during my visit, I published my first book! It’s called How To Live Abroad and Thrive with Passive Income and can be purchased here. It’s safe to say that I had a very exciting experience at the property!

The pool at the Shangri-La’s Far Eastern Plaza Hotel was absolutely phenomenal. Located on the very top of the building this pool offered even more phenomenal views of all corners of the city. For those of you like to take pictures this is the place to go!

Fitness and spa facilities can be found on the sixth floor of the Shangri-La’s Far Eastern Plaza Hotel. I loved the men’s spa which offered a hot bath, cold bath, steam room, and dry sauna. Nearby can also be found gym, which had tons of equipment. The staff in the fitness center were very warm and welcoming with each visit. A true pleasure and a favorite place of mine.

On the same floor as the gym you can find Shang Palace Restaurant. Shang Palace is the signature restaurant of the Shangri-La brand and offers elegant Cantonese dining with a modern décor. I was excited to have a dinner there and got to experience a tasting menu with wine pairing. My favorites for the evening were the Pan-fried radish rice cake, Braised E-Fu noodles with crab roe and mushrooms in truffle sauce, and finally the Almond milk green tea flavored with egg white served with egg tart topped with bird’s nest. The staff’s choice of wine pairing were quite well done and throughout the entire evening, the service was great!

Best Traditional Taiwanese Food in Taipei: Mipon Restaurant Review

22 Apr 2019

Rest assured that I will seek out the best local food in every single place I visit! Thus, the search for quality local Taiwanese food in Taipei led me to Mipon Restaurant at the luxurious Grand Mayfull Hotel. The Grand Mayfull Hotel is on the north side of the city, in a very high-end area. I would absolutely love to stay in the property in the future, but didn’t get the chance this time around.

Walking in the Grand Mayfull Hotel lobby made my jaw drop with its beauty. Think chandeliers and gold! The Mipon Restaurant is a more traditional style Chinese and Taiwanese restaurant on the third floor of the property.

The interior of the Mipon Restaurant was beautiful. Quality materials used throughout with more beautiful chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. Opening the menu, I was quite impressed by the variety and number of dishes. Of course I sought out traditional Taiwanese items so I could get my head wrapped around this unique cuisine that was still fairly new to me.

The first few dishes that arrived included a fish skin soup, clams with garlic, and a cold chicken dish. All of these were very different compared to each other, but brought something very special to the table, literally. This cold chicken was one of the best that I have ever had, it actually paired perfectly with the 2013 J & H Selbach Incline Riesling from Mosel, Germany. Personally, I love when dishes are very different from one another, this tends to create balance and satisfaction.

Next came egg rolls stuffed with eel which is famous at the Mipon Restaurant. This reminded me of both Japanese food and Mexican food. Mexican because it’s burrito-like presentation, and Japanese because it was refreshing like a piece of sushi. After this was 3 Cup Octopus, a very traditional Taiwanese dish. This was my second favorite dish of the meal! The herbs were incredible.

Best Traditional Taiwanese Food in Taipei: Mipon Restaurant Review Asia Blog Food Taipei Taiwan

Also came a very traditional Taiwanese dish, pig intestines soup. For this dish, it was only meant to enjoy the broth, not eat any pig guts. The broth was subtle and a nice neutral flavor compared to the stronger 3 Cup Octopus.

Best Traditional Taiwanese Food in Taipei: Mipon Restaurant Review Asia Blog Food Taipei Taiwan

For the finale, and my absolute favorite item of the meal, was the roast beef, roasted for 10 hours. This meat absolutely melted in my mouth with the perfect amount of fat. This is surely a must order at the Mipon Restaurant! Seriously.

I tried a couple items for dessert, but my absolute favorite was the fried dough with almond milk. This was a very flavorful yet light dessert, and I left me feeling very comfortable and not stuffed like a pig.

Throughout the evening the staff at Mipon were fantastic, always greeting with a smile, and very knowledgeable about what they were serving. I also got to meet the chef who seemed very passionate about his food. This is a meal that will live on in my memory for years to come! I can highly recommend you to go try traditional Taiwanese cuisine at Mipon Restaurant inside of the Grand Mayfull Hotel. I loved it!

The suite was incredibly spacious and modern with a large living room that included a, wrap around sofa, dining or work table, and multiple chairs. I had Hyatt Club Lounge access on the 22nd floor for the duration of the stay. I loved the lengthy hours for breakfast as well as evening hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. Breakfast went from 6:30am to 10:30am on weekdays and 6:30am to 11:00am on the weekends. Tea and coffee are available all day with some small snacks in the afternoon. Evening cocktails and hors d’oeuvres were available from 5:30pm to 8:00pm. The food in the lounge was quite extensive and super tasty. One of the evenings they made pork ribs, which were absolutely to die for! I liked that they worked in local Taiwanese dishes so I got to experience even more local cuisine during my stay. The alcohol selection was very extensive as well!

On the fifth floor is where you can find the pool, spa, and gym. The pool is a rooftop pool, massive in size and a great place to relax. The men’s spa is what I really took advantage of, which was equipped with a cold bath, hot bath, steam room and dry sauna. I visited at least once a day and really enjoyed my time there. The gym was well-equipped and never required guests to wait around.

During my stay I also had a chance to try their Yun Jin Chinese restaurant. The interior of the restaurant was very chic and comfortable. The Yun Jin restaurant had dishes from all over China and Taiwan so anyone with an interest in these cuisines will find something they enjoy. Some of my favorite items from the dinner included the asparagus, fried anchovies, spicy prawns, and pork belly. The service was also very good throughout the meal, just like the rest of the property.

The day I arrived at the Grand Hyatt Taipei was the day after my birthday. The staff had been following my Instagram and surprised me with a birthday cake and a bottle of wine! Great service for this special occasion and in every other area throughout the stay.

One last thing, make sure you ask for the chocolate coated mango for your turn-down amenity! So good, I asked for it again and again!

Easy way to find hotels in Taiwan via a search engine

It is sometimes difficult to find good hotel rates in Taiwan if you take the wrong approach. In this case, it is necessary to proceed wisely by comparing many hotels online while researching accommodation options in Taiwan. To do so, you can use an online hotel comparison website to choose the best hotels for you.

Certainly, it is recommended to start your hotel research on a reliable site. It is possible to have a wide choice of hotels on cozycozy.com, from the most to the least expensive. Like any other platform, this search engine offers luxury accommodations or more economic rooms for booking.

If you’re a traveler hoping to maximize your trip to Taiwan, there are private room deals with luxurious layouts for your consideration. In fact, after days spent out exploring, it’s only natural to want to invest some time relaxing in a luxury hotel in a quieter part of your destination.

That being said, if you are on a tight budget, you can find even cheaper packages if you compare the offers available on the search engine. Moreover, it is always possible to find an affordable price by negotiating the accommodation rate with a professional. Above all, don’t forget to check the customer reviews to limit unforeseen and bad experiences.

Xiao Long Bao Cooking Class in Taipei: CookInn Taiwan Review

11 Apr 2019

Everywhere I go, I do my best to seek out local experiences. When visiting Taipei, I arranged a cooking class with CookInn Taiwan. I’ve been on a real dumpling making kick lately and wanted to learn the best techniques from professionals! This experience included a food market tour and cooking class for Xiao Long Bao, Beef Noodle, Taiwanese Smashed Cucumber Salad, and Bubble Tea.

At 9:30 in the morning we met at the CookInn Taiwan kitchen, centrally located in the middle of the city. Once we got settled in, we were off to the food market to see where the locals shopped and learn some interesting facts along the way, we also stopped at the National Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall. The market was just nearby the kitchen, so it wasn’t very difficult to walk there, only about 10 minutes.

Once at the market, I was quite impressed with how orderly, friendly and clean it was. As we worked our way through the market, we learned about different ingredients and how they were used in local cuisine. I’ve encountered most of these items while living in Asia but a few I hadn’t!

Once we finished with the market tour, we were back to the kitchen to learn how to cook Xiao Long Bao, Beef Noodle, Taiwanese Smashed Cucumber Salad, and Bubble Tea. We worked our way through from beginning to end on each item. As I mentioned, I was most curious about dumpling making techniques, which I learned a whole lot of! Mission success.

Once finished preparing, it was time to feast! Everything tasted lovely, even my misshapen dumplings! At this point I was basically ravenous because I skipped breakfast, which was a mistake. I really learned a lot from this day of exploring and cooking!

The whole experience was fairly well thought out from start to finish. The staff were friendly and the kitchen was very clean and modern. Once complete, we were supplied a recipe book with our picture on the front, which was a nice customized touch. If you’re interested in making Xiao Long Bao, Beef Noodle, Taiwanese Smashed Cucumber Salad, or Bubble Tea, this is the experience for you! I truly enjoyed my time with CookInn Taiwan!

Hotel Eclat Review: Boutique Accommodation in Taipei

09 Apr 2019

We all know that the big brand name hotels are great, but sometimes it’s nice to step off the highly traveled path, and go for something more unique and boutique. This is why on my latest trip to Taipei, Taiwan, I stayed at Hotel Eclat. Hotel Eclat is located right in the center of the city, in Da’An, a short walk to the famous Taipei 101.

When I arrived at the airport in Taipei, coming from Tokyo, I was promptly picked up by the Hotel Eclat Airport Transfer Service, which happened to be using a shiny new Tesla. From the moment of arrival at the property, I noticed all of the artwork, whether it’s outside or in the lobby, every piece made a strong statement.Hotel Eclat Review: Boutique Accommodation in Taipei Asia Blog Hotels Taipei Taiwan

After a smooth check in process, and a nice meeting with the staff, it was time to get some rest after my flight. The first thing I noticed was how spacious the room was. The room was well equipped and had all of the same amenities as big-named five-star luxury hotels would have, including capsule coffee machine, electric curtains, a quality sound system, and comfortable bedding.

The bathroom was well equipped with a shower stall, electronic toilet, TV, and quality toiletries.

There were a few additions including complimentary mini-bar, great welcome amenity, and the ability to rent a fishbowl, a feature I have never seen in all of my experience as a travel writer!

Hotel Eclat has a restaurant and bar on the ground floor, and where breakfast is served. The staff was very friendly and conscientious throughout the stay. For breakfast, I would highly recommend that you focus on the local items, especially the Din Tai Fung Xiao Long Bao! Very tasty indeed.

Throughout the day Hotel Eclat offers refreshments in the lobby. It’s always nice to have something to snack on!

Also, I celebrated my birthday during my stay and wanted to say thank you to the team for the birthday gift!

Hotel Eclat Review: Boutique Accommodation in Taipei Asia Blog Hotels Taipei Taiwan

Overall, Hotel Eclat in Taipei was a solid stay, which was primarily because of their rooms, location, and quality staff. The property could use some slight improvements here and there and does not have a pool, gym, or relaxation facilities. At the end of the day, if you’re looking for a unique boutique hotel experience, you try Hotel Eclat in Taipei, Taiwan.
