Best Hotels in Kuala Lumpur: W Hotel Review

Coming back to Kuala Lumpur is always something I look forward to, and this trip had an extra layer of excitement to it. I’d booked three nights at the W Kuala Lumpur, a property I’d never stayed at before, and I was genuinely curious to see how it stacked up. The drive in from KLIA takes about an hour by taxi in normal traffic, which gave me plenty of time to settle in and start lining up everything I wanted to do over the next few days. KL has no shortage of options when you want to stay somewhere special, and I wanted to see for myself whether the W earned its place on a shortlist of the best hotels in Kuala Lumpur for design-led luxury. Three nights later, here is the full review.

A KLCC Location You Cannot Beat

best hotels in Kuala Lumpur W Review

The first thing I should mention in this W Kuala Lumpur review is the location, because it genuinely is one of the strongest reasons the property keeps showing up on lists of the best hotels in Kuala Lumpur. You are placed right in the heart of KLCC, with the Petronas Twin Towers basically out the window. From the rooftop pool deck the view is theatrical. From the right rooms it is even better.

What I did not expect was how much I would enjoy the park next to the towers. KLCC Park has a proper running loop, plenty of shade, and a small lake that catches the towers in reflection in the late afternoon. My partner and I ended up walking it most evenings and I went out for a couple of light morning runs. If you are coming to KL for the first time and trying to pick between properties, that walking access is worth a lot. You can be at the base of the towers in about five minutes on foot.

Heads-up if you are flying in from far away: KLIA is about 50km out, so plan on roughly an hour by Grab in normal traffic. If you are still working out flights, I usually start in Skyscanner and cross-check prices before booking. For staying connected on arrival, I picked up a Malaysia eSIM through GlobalYo and was online before I even cleared immigration.

First Impressions: A Glitzy Lobby and a Kombucha Welcome

W Kuala Lumpur Lobby
W Kuala Lumpur Lobby

The lobby sits up on the 8th floor and the elevator ride up is part of the show. You step out and the space hits you all at once: layered lighting, sculptural installations, statement art, and a lot of that signature W glitz. It manages to feel cinematic without tipping into try-hard, which is a balance the brand does not always pull off.

Check-in itself was warm and unhurried. The team noticed my name, asked the right questions, and handed us a small kombucha shot as a welcome drink. I have had a lot of welcome drinks in this part of the world, and the kombucha was a fun deviation from the usual. Small thing, but it sets the tone.

Deluxe Room: Spacious, Modern, Mood-Lit

W Kuala Lumpur Room

The Deluxe room felt huge. Whatever category you book, the W is generous on space, and ours had a proper sitting area with two chairs and a small table by the window. We spent more time there than I expected. There is no espresso machine in our category, just a tea kettle, which is the one room amenity gripe I have for a property at this price point.

W Kuala Lumpur Room

The bedside lighting controls are the kind of feature you do not realize you wanted until you have it. There are multiple presets next to the bed: bright morning, soft evening, dim night, and a few in between. It made winding down very easy. The bed itself is a classic W signature, and we slept well even though our room sat above a fairly busy intersection. The blackout curtains do real work and the glazing keeps most of the noise out, but if you are a light sleeper I would request a higher floor or one off the street side. Worth a quick note when you book.

W Kuala Lumpur bathroom hotel review

The bathroom is laid out properly. Standalone tub, separate shower stall, and a fully enclosed toilet stall with a bidet. The amenities smell incredible. Whatever the in-house lotion is, my partner ended up falling in love with it. Housekeeping deserves a specific mention here: every time we came back the room had been put together carefully, with the small touches you only get when someone actually cares about the work. This is a recurring theme across the property.

YEN Imperial Brunch: 90 Minutes That Made the Trip

Yen Imperial Champagne Brunch Kuala Lumpur

If there is one thing you book before you arrive, make it the YEN Imperial Champagne Brunch. 888 Malaysian ringgit per person, 90 minutes, unlimited food and free-flow champagne. The format is more à la carte than buffet, which means dishes come out hot and the kitchen is actually cooking, not staging.

I came in expecting a solid hotel Cantonese meal and walked out telling my partner I could not stop thinking about the radish cake. Order it. Then order it again. The signature dishes here are genuinely impressive, with proper depth of flavor and a kitchen that knows how to read a table and pace the courses. The wine pours were generous, the staff were thoughtful about timing, and the room itself has a quiet glamour that suits the format. This single meal would justify a stay on its own and is part of why I have been telling friends the W belongs on a shortlist of the best hotels in Kuala Lumpur for foodies.

Flock: All-Day Dining That Actually Earns the Title

W Kuala Lumpur Flock Restaurant
W Kuala Lumpur Flock Restaurant

Flock is the all-day restaurant and we ended up eating here several times. There is indoor seating and a really pleasant outdoor rooftop section, and we used both. The thing that surprised me is that all three meals were good. Breakfast was excellent, lunch was excellent, dinner was excellent. That is not common, even at five-star properties.

W Kuala Lumpur Flock Restaurant Breakfast

Breakfast deserves a paragraph of its own. There is a buffet, which is well stocked with both Western and Asian options, and you also get an à la carte menu on top of it. The roti bakar with kaya was a highlight, and the team brewed me a proper coffee while I worked through it. There is a real point of view at this kitchen. They include enough local Malaysian and Chinese dishes that you do not feel like you are eating at an international hotel anywhere in the world. Try the noodle station and grab a teh tarik. You will be glad you did.

Across every meal the staff at Flock were exceptional. By the end of our stay we had a small handful of staff we genuinely looked forward to seeing. That is the difference between a good hotel and one of the best hotels in Kuala Lumpur.

Wet Deck: Rooftop Pool, Twin Tower Views, and Latin Cocktails

W Kuala Lumpur Wet Deck Review
W Kuala Lumpur Wet Deck Review
W Kuala Lumpur Wet Deck Review

Wet Deck is the rooftop pool and the bar and restaurant that surrounds it. The view of the Petronas Twin Towers is the headline, but also memorable were the food and drink. There is a Latin influence on the menu. The chicken tacos were great. The Kuala Loco cocktail also notable.

W Kuala Lumpur Wet Deck Review

I want to call out the manager Marvin specifically. He spent real time with us across multiple visits, made thoughtful drink recommendations, and was the kind of host who makes you want to come back to the property. There is often a live DJ in the evenings.

Room Service That Genuinely Wowed Me

W Kuala Lumpur Review Room Service
W Kuala Lumpur Review Room Service

I do not write paragraphs about hotel room service often, but this earned one. The menu is not the longest you will see, and that is to its credit. Everything we ordered was honestly excellent. The Indian dishes were genuinely flavorful, properly spiced, and clearly cooked with care rather than padded with cream. The salmon was on point. Delivery was fast and the team plated and set up the in-room dining table elegantly. If you are tired after a long day of walking the city and want to stay in, do not feel like you are settling for the second-best option.

AWAY Spa: Renovation Year, Still Worth Booking

AWAY Spa was under renovation during my visit, which meant treatments were running out of an alternate location on property. I want to be honest about that, because if you are coming for the full design experience of the original space, plan around it and check status before you book. That said, the actual treatment was exceptional. We did a couples massage and both therapists were genuinely experienced.

Gym and Fitness: Solid, With One Caveat

The gym is medium-sized and reasonably well-equipped. There are free weights, a couple of cable machines, the basic accessories you would want for a quick session, and two treadmills. The two treadmills are the one weak spot. They were occupied a couple of times when I came up, and a property of this size with this many fitness-minded guests could probably use one or two more. Outside of cardio, I had no issues. KLCC Park is right next door if you would rather run outside, which is what I ended up doing on two of the three mornings.

Pierre’s Tip: How to Get the Most Out of a W KL Stay

A few things I would do differently if I were planning this stay again. Ask for a higher floor when you confirm your booking, simply because the towers view is dramatically better the higher you go. If you are coming for an anniversary or birthday, mention it. The team here clearly enjoys turning small notes into nice gestures.

One more practical note. Agoda tends to be the strongest booking engine for KL hotels in my experience, and most W KL rates I checked allowed free cancellation up to a few days before arrival. If you are working remotely on the road, having NordVPN handy is worth it for hotel Wi-Fi anywhere in the region. Both small things, both worth knowing before you book.

What I Loved

  • Petronas Twin Towers views from the rooftop
  • YEN Imperial Champagne Brunch is genuinely exceptional
  • Every food and beverage outlet delivered, including room service
  • Staff who feel like friends by day three
  • KLCC Park literally next door for morning runs
  • Spacious rooms with mood lighting presets

What Could Be Better

  • No espresso machine in our room category
  • Street-side rooms can be noisy at night
  • Two treadmills is one too few for the property size
  • AWAY Spa was under renovation during our stay

Final Verdict: One of the Best Hotels in Kuala Lumpur Right Now

W Kuala Lumpur Hotel Review

Three nights in and I left genuinely impressed. The W Kuala Lumpur is doing something specific really well. The food is the loudest argument: every restaurant, every meal, even room service, was at a level I rarely see across an entire property. The view of the towers is unbeatable. And the team is the kind of team that turns a hotel from somewhere you stay into somewhere you remember. If you are putting together a shortlist of the best hotels in Kuala Lumpur for your next trip, this belongs on it.

Who should book it. Couples celebrating something. Foodies. Solo travelers who want a property they will actually use. Design-led travelers who appreciate the difference between a hotel that looks like a magazine and one that lives like one. If you have read my other museum-quality hotel reviews and that aesthetic resonates, you will love this place.
