I often eat tasting menus for my “work”, but it’s not often that they are 12+ courses. My latest food marathon tasting menu was at Celadon Thai Restaurant in Bangkok, Thailand. The Celadon restaurant is The Sukhothai Hotel’s traditional Thai restaurant. Read about my stay at The Sukhothai Hotel here. The hotel property is made up of several buildings and the Thai restaurant has a traditional Thai design.
Even though I know Thai food well, these dishes are put together in a very special and modern way. If you’re familiar with Thai cuisine, you will recognize lots of individual flavors, but the presentation and composition of the dishes at Celadon is something rather unique.
It might be too drawn out to discuss all of the 12 courses, but one of my favorites was the crispy peanut chips, with dried shrimp and pickled tamarind salad. The salad was bursting with flavor and well paired with the peanut chips. Spicy, sweet, sour and a little bit salty, this dish had it all and more! I’d be happy eat this every day, seriously.
Another one of my favorite items from the meal was the spicy seafood in lemongrass broth and coconut seashell. This dish came served first without the broth, so you can appreciate the beautiful presentation. Then the hot broth is poured over the frozen coconut milk seashell, which melts into the soup and creates a creamy rich flavorful soup. This dish was to die for! Reminiscent of Tom Yum with its flavor composition.
Another dish I would be pleased to mention is the Northern-Style Egg Noodles in fermented bean, shrimp curry and crispy pork belly. This dish definitely looks unique but it almost tasted like an Italian dish. Shocking I know. Regardless, it was delicious.
It was a great surprise when suddenly, during the meal, a traditional Thai dance show started! It’s always an enjoyable experience to watch this well-preserved Thai art.
We finished our meal with a coconut and banana ice cream as well as preserved Bilimbi dessert. These were rather light desserts, and after such a hard-fought meal, much appreciated.
If you’re looking for a way to enjoy Thai cuisine in a modern and unique way, then you will surely find the 12 course tasting menu at Celadon quite interesting. This is definitely a fine dining meal, and it had the service to match. All in all this was a fantastic experience that I really enjoyed. Keep an open mind when you enjoy this menu and leave your expectations at the door, because this is something unique!
