I was already greatly enjoying my stay at the Westin hotel in the center of Rome. However, I wanted to explore the dining options, so I decided to have a dinner at their Doney restaurant. Before you continue this article, you better be sure to read the full hotel review!
The restaurant dining room is quite elegant and overlooks the street. To get the meal startled, I went with the Mare Nostrum. This was a dish that combined tuna tartar, swordfish and a prawn salad. I must say that this started the meal off with a bang because I really enjoyed all of them!
After working my way through that first and very memorable Mare Nostrum, it was time for a few other plates. Coming at the same time were the risotto with artichokes, fresh mint and provolone cheese, and also the potato gnocchi with porcini mushrooms and salted ricotta cheese. I must say that out of the two dishes, the risotto was absolutely the winner, hands down. The gnocchi was acceptable but could use a little work. The risotto was probably one of the better risottos that I’ve ever had. It came in a great little metal pot inside of a wooden plate which added to the experience. The risotto was very creamy and the cheese really set it off.
Once I the risotto, it was time to move on to the beef main course, with a red wine of course. The wine was a 2012 Barbera d’ Alba from Barolo, Italy. I ordered this to accompany my beautiful beef fillet, with a reduction of Brunello di Montalcino wine sauce with potatoes. This piece of meat was cooked to perfection. My knife glided through it like a hot knife through butter.
To finish off the evening, was of course dessert. I went with the tiramisu which I can definitely recommend to you. This came accompanied with two bits of meringue. I love that they offered a glass of lemoncello at the end to have just after the espresso. I was stuffed but still felt great!
I didn’t really know what to expect heading into this meal, but I’m sure happy that I took the opportunity to have a dinner at the Doney restaurant. The dishes that stood out to me were of course the tuna tartar, the amazing risotto and course the beef fillet. Overall, the wines were nice but could be a little better to accompany these magical dishes. The service and the ambiance of the dining room were also solid. In the end, I enjoyed my time at the Doney restaurant inside of the Westin Excelsior Rome hotel and I can assume that you will have a good time there as well!
