As you know from other articles, I recently stayed at the Grande Bretagne hotel as well as the King George hotel located in the center of Athens. Both are Luxury Collection hotels and I’ve had a chance to have dinners at both properties. The rooftop restaurant at the Grande Bretagne hotel is called GB Roof Garden. The restaurant gets great reviews online and I already had a chance to enjoy the beautiful view at breakfast. As you can imagine, I was excited for the dinner!
To begin the meal, I went with a recommendation from my server, which was a drink from their special cocktail menu. The cocktails were made partially with Greek ingredients, I went for a Manhattan. Well done!
After much deliberation with the staff, I had finally made my decision for the evening’s order. To begin I went with their tuna tartar and an order of scallops. The tuna tartar was the clear winner if these were competitors. The tuna tartar was exploding with flavor. It was seasoned with soy sauce, ginger and sesame oil which gave it an Asian flavor.
Everything was going well, and then came the risotto, which blew everything else away to that point! This was seasoned with saffron and slow cooked ox tail. This risotto was extremely creamy and packed a serious punch! You can tell from the photos that it was very dense and bursting with flavor. There was also seafood in the risotto which helped to balance out the extreme richness. This was paired with a 2014 Nykteri wine from Santorini. A lovely combination indeed! Bravo.
For the main, I went with the 1,000 gram Tomahawk steak! Of course, I ordered it medium-rare. This mega steak did not disappoint. Although I ordered sides, they were unnecessary. No seasoning to mask over this beautiful flavor. To accompany this fine piece of perfectly cooked meat, was a 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon as well as a 2012 Emphasis Syrah. You can’t beat this combination!
To finish off the evening, were several items, including tiramisu, sorbet, dessert wine and espresso. I must say that out of all of these, my favorite was the Vinsanto wine from Santorini. After much discussion, I learned about how the different dessert wines are produced. At the end of the day, I preferred the light, less sweet taste of the Vinsanto. It was magical!
When it was all said and done, this was a fantastic meal. The dining room looks over the Acropolis as well as Syntagma square which provides a beautiful setting for a meal. The service throughout the evening was exceptional and I truly enjoyed myself. For all of these reasons and more, I can highly recommend you to have a meal at the GB Roof Garden Restaurant at the Grande Bretagne hotel in Athens, Greece.
