All of the countries I travel to, I always try to focus on authentic cuisine at least part of the time. During my recent trip to Thailand, while I was staying at the Royal Orchid Sheraton hotel along the Chao Phraya river, I took a visit to their authentic Thai restaurant called Thara Thong.
When you enter, it feels like you’re walking into a very traditional Thai home in the countryside. At first glance, you might think that you’ll be sitting on the floor. However, the tables are built into the floor and you can extend your legs down so don’t worry about cramping your legs fellow Westerners. As you all know, I lived in Thailand for three years so I’ve got a pretty good grasp on the food. The menu is quite extensive. They do offer some set menu options which are definitely key if you’re unfamiliar with Thai cuisine. Otherwise you might just be picking and choosing randomly and at least with the set, they put together items that are known to be good as well as items that pair well together.
Both of us went for the large set menu! I had already had a few glasses of whiskey and I must say I was super excited for the food to come. Before any of our orders came out, the chef sent us a shrimp ball which was very tasty and field me with enthusiasm.
Not long after, it was business time and we were each sent a giant tray of amazing Thai food. We were both able to choose our level of spiciness and of course you know, Pierre likes it hot.
Mother of god, look at this prawn. It looks like a lobster tail and tasted just as good but is actually a prawn. Every single item on the set menu was fantastic. Not to mention, during our entire meal there were several acts of a traditional Thai dance occurring in the middle of the dining room.
Seriously, let’s get back to the food. I was so satisfied with all the food. I really don’t need to go into much detail, it was just absolutely magical and that’s all you need to know.
It took us each about an hour to finish all of the food but we did it and I must say, I’m quite proud of myself. It was then time for the mango sticky rice which is a famous Thai dessert. This had to be the best mango sticky rice I’ve ever had and it came with just perfect coconut ice cream. The set menu also includes your choice of coffee or tea at the end but I was so stuffed, I just called it quits.
This meal was just perfect. When something is just so good, there’s really not that much need to go into extra detail. I enjoyed the traditional Thai style dining room, the show and of course the magnificent food. If you really want to get the Thai experience while visiting Bangkok, highly recommend you to visit the Thara Thong restaurant at the Royal Orchid Sheraton hotel.
