In the north of India, I was introduced to Bengali food, and in the south I was introduced to Kerala food at the Vembanad Restaurant inside of The Paul Hotel in Bangalore, India. Be sure to read about my Paul Hotel stay here. The Vembanad is well known in the area for offering the boldly flavored Kerala cuisine. I found Kerala food different than other Indian food I had tried, mostly because of the seasonings and that I felt lighter after eating it. Our visit fell during a local festival time in Kerala, so we were served a full-on feast! This also meant that they had decorated the dining room in a special festive way.
The meal started off with a bang when the Vembanad staff brought a basket full of dried chili, tapioca chips and crackers. These were served alongside fish and mango pickle, which I absolutely fell in love with during the meal. I accompanied this with a Black Beard Dry Stout, which is actually produced by the Murphy’s Brewhouse inside of The Paul Hotel.
Some of my favorite items from the evening were the anchovies fried in thick Kerala masala, the prawns cooked inside of a banana leaf, and of course the dessert which was the chef’s special. During this meal we are also served a bread which was made from fermented rice. This had a slightly sour taste which fit the food perfectly.
The evening was accompanied with great service, as the staff were warm and friendly. I loved this meal because the food was so unique, and pumping with bold flavors. Kerala food seems to fit my palate perfectly, salty, spicy and sour. This got me excited to visit Kerala in the near future, but for now I’m very satisfied with the food I had at the Vembanad restaurant, at The Paul Hotel in Bangalore, India!
