First off, I’d like to say that I love Hong Kong! On my most recent trip I stayed at the Kowloon Shangri-La hotel. While there, I had the pleasure of eating at their two Michelin star Shang Palace restaurant. I was excited because I had brought my mother who I was showing around the region.
The Shangri-La’s luxurious design carried right into their Shang Palace restaurant. The dining room has high ceilings with lots of red and gold color. You’ll find white table cloths and only the finest of utensils and tableware. The attentive staff greeted us and brought us directly to a lovely table in the center of the room. There was a set menu prepared but before we began eating, we were served a welcome tea. It was just lovely and a good warm-up for our evening.
The first course of food included a wagyu beef, crispy noodles with egg and a piece of super juicy pork. This amazing sample plate started off the night with a bang! I accompanied this with a lovely red wine. When a meal starts off so good, I knew the rest would be a treat.
The next item was the double boiled chicken broth with fish maw, sea conch and matsutake mushroom. This was a subtle taste which led our taste buds on roller coaster. The meat was tender in the soup and made me remember a similar home-cooked chicken soup my mom used to make.
The most memorable course of the evening came next which was the Cantonese-style crispy chicken served with lemon juice and spicy salt. I’ve had roasted goose and duck but this chicken was on a whole other level. Eating it with the salt brought out so much flavor it made my head spin! I could eat the chicken skin for the rest of my life. Super crispy and packed full of flavor, it was an utter treat. Very well done.
Another very memorable dish of the evening was the fried rice with egg white, conpoy and crab meat. They had served some hot sauce in the beginning which I coated my rice with. Just the way I like it, hot!
To finish off the evening was of course the dessert. For this there was a double boiled pear soup with peach gum, followed by a tree of sweets. From beginning to end, this meal was perfect. This restaurant truly does deserve the highest of ratings. The design of the dining room, the attentive service and the incredible food make this a home run for any occasion. I’d recommend going with a group so you can sample lots of items. Enjoy your lovely meal at the Shang Palace in Hong Kong at the Kowloon Shangri-La hotel.
