Shanghai is a very happening city! It’s massive, beautiful and offers tons of dining options. On my recent visit, I checked out the Fifty 8 Grill inside of the Mandarin Oriental Pudong hotel. Lately, the restaurant has been getting some buzz and I wanted to see what it was all about.
The interior of the restaurant is nice but isn’t very assuming. It wasn’t until the food started rolling around that I really got excited. Normally, most bread isn’t worth mentioning. However, at the Fifty 8 Grill they had a tomato spread to accompany cheesy bread which was something special and very tasty!
The first round of food included an order of frog legs, escargot with chorizo and fig with beet root salad. The frog legs were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The escargot was out of the shells and was accompanied with chorizo. I’ve never met a chorizo I didn’t like and this was the perfect combination along with tomato and snails which acted like best friends.
Obviously, we were at a grill so we had to order a steak. Pierre’s perfect evening usually involves red wine and a nice steak, this is exactly what I got at the Fifty 8 Grill. This wasn’t your average steak folks, this was something extraordinary. We already had gotten the juices flowing with the beautiful starters and a few glasses of wine. Now it was time to get to business with these grand David Blackmore Wagyu short ribs. Just take a look at this meat! I don’t need to say anything else, it was glorious. To accompany this piece of art, there were potatoes as well as garden peas. Sometimes vegetables are boring but these had bacon and that puts a smile on my face.
For dessert there were three items. The madeleines were simply to die for and the wine knocked my socks off!
All this talk about food and I didn’t even mention the service. The restaurant was relatively busy, yet the staff had no problems handling all the customers. We never went unaccounted for and had great service throughout the evening. All in all, the food was simply glorious. This is definitely one of those special meals that I truly loved. You know it’s special when you enjoy practically everything. I’m really surprised that the Michelin guide didn’t award this restaurant a star. However, not all rating systems are perfect and you can’t put all your trust into one. Trust Pierre instead. Wink. If you’re looking for a fantastic meal including a wonderful steak, then I would highly recommend you to go to the Fifty 8 Grill inside of the Mandarin Oriental Pudong hotel.
