Beer, Mezcal, & Taco Tour in Mexico City Review

What I quickly learned from visiting Mexico City is how incredibly deep Mexican cuisine can go. The variety and the richness of Mexican cuisine is way deeper than I ever could’ve imagined! Luckily I during my search for some guidance, I enlisted Sabores Mexico Food Tours for some needed help. I thought a good place to start would be with the most famous Mexican food around, the taco. Sabores Mexico Food Tours is one of the first food tour companies in the city and I was sure to join them for their Beer, Mezcal, & Taco Tour!

It all started with meeting the tour guide, who happened to be the owner, Roderigo. I learned quickly that this was not a walking tour and most of the time, we were brought around by van. The first stop was a taqueria with a long history that went back decades. While there, I tried two different tacos, both in flour tortillas and both with a completely different flavor. One had egg and the other simply meat. I paired them with a beer and I was off to a good start!

We then moved on foot to the next stop, because it was very conveniently located around the corner. Along the way Rodrigo shared a lot of facts about Mexico City, including about an old cinema that is supposed to be updated in the near future. These little pieces of information that you just wouldn’t find if you were to do it yourself! The amount of knowledge you gain from such an experience with a local who truly knows what they’re talking about is simply immense.

The next stop was my absolute favorite of the evening and was actually the most simple. This was basically just meat on a tortilla and served straight off the griddle. A squeeze of lime and your preferred sauce, and I fell into food bliss! I can’t wait to revisit this magical establishment.

We were then picked up by the Sabores van and whisked off to learn a bit more about Mexican culture before heading to our next food stop. Once again I was pleasantly surprised by Rodgrigo’s historical knowledge.

It was now time for the famous al pastor tacos! These are really blowing up in popularity right now and I think part of the interest comes from the fact that the meat is prepared Lebanese style. This method adds a lot more richness to the flavor and combined with Mexican spices make for quite a treat. If I had to choose between a taco with the kebab meat or a quesadilla, I would have to go for the quesadilla. These quesadillas are known as “la gringa” which was named after an American woman’s suggestion.

The last food visit of the evening was taking things in a little bit of a different direction. This is where we tried a vegetarian taco and a shrimp taco. Both were tasty in flavor but I definitely prefer the richness of the fat from the meat in the other tacos.

Beer, Mezcal, & Taco Tour in Mexico City Review Blog Central America Mexico Mexico City Tours

With that we were completely stuffed, but there is always room for some alcohol so we made our final stop at a Mezcal bar. Mezcal is a Mexican alcohol made from agave and is also currently quite popular these days. There is an incredible amount of variety when it comes to Mezcal and I got to try two types straight and a Mezcal cocktail. This stuff is strong!

Beer, Mezcal, & Taco Tour in Mexico City Review Blog Central America Mexico Mexico City Tours

From beginning to end I enjoyed the Beer, Mezcal, & Taco Tour in Mexico City. This food tour went way more in depth into local culture and history than I ever would’ve expected. Although you can find good food in Mexico City on your own, it would be absolutely impossible to learn as much as I did on this lovely tour with Sabores Mexico Food Tours. When it is all said and done, it was a valuable experience and I enjoyed all of it!

Shinsekai Street Food Tour: Arigato Japan Review

28 Aug 2019

My last big event for my time this year in Osaka was a tour with Arigato Japan. This happened to be my fourth tour with the company! I keep going because they’ve been so much fun and interesting. Previously I’ve went on the Luxury Tokyo Sake, Cocktail, Whisky and Pairing Tour in Tokyo, Old Town Tokyo Food Tour also in Tokyo, Matcha Kyoto Green Tea Tour, and now it’s time for the Shinsekai Street Food Tour here in Osaka. The Shinsekai neighborhood dates back to the early 1900s and grew in popularity through the postwar Showa era into the 1960s. This neighborhood is very colorful and has a true local Osaka charm!

The tour started with a dessert shop visit. This was a very local shop with a long history which has served confectionery items with various fillings. These were a bit intense so we stashed them away to eat later. I went for the banana filled cake, and it was very dense and sweet!

We were then on the move, making our way to a shrine where we learned about local culture. After, we stopped at an incredibly cheap vending machine with drinks available for 50 cents. After, we visited a local knife shop with beautiful hand-crafted products where we got to sample various types. Cutting through the carrot was like cutting through butter! Too bad I travel with only a carry-on bag.

After a little bit more walking, we worked up an appetite and it was time to try original Osaka style sushi. I was completely unaware that this kind of sushi even existed in the first place! It’s called narzushi and originally made to last longer than standard sushi as it’s preserved with vinegar. We learned it could last for months! As you would imagine it’s a bit more sour than normal sushi, but that’s just what I like! I had a refreshing beer with my sushi.

We stumbled out onto the street and before we knew it were playing a classic local game called Smart Ball. It was a simple game but really let us know were were in Osaka.

The next food stop was for kushikatsu which is a Japanese dish of deep-fried skewered meat and vegetables. Anything you can imagine is skewered, fried, and served with a very delicious sauce. I’m taking a mental note of this place to return to later! We ordered six items each, which included pork with kimchee, cheese, shiitake mushroom, beef, hot dog, and more! Very healthy. Wink.

As the evening went on, the sun went down and the views became more and more colorful. The center of the Shinsekai area features the Tsutenkaku Tower, a landmark of Osaka that stands 103 m tall. This tower had a very unique history which I guess you’ll have to take the tour to learn about 😉

Once again it was time for more food, takoyaki, another Osaka classic! Basically a pancake ball with octopus inside. We got to make our own in a shop that was off the beaten path with a lot of personality. Very special.

Shinsekai Street Food Tour: Arigato Japan Review Asia Blog Food Japan Osaka Tours

Our final stop for the tour was to get mixed juice. This was a simple smoothie of three fresh fruits. The shop has a long history and apparently, years ago it wasn’t always so easy to procure fresh fruits in Japan.

Yet again, another fantastic tour with Arigato Japan Food Tours. Our tour guides Gabi and Carlos did a lovely job, giving us lots of information about the area and the unique Osaka culture. I absolutely loved it and I’m sure you will too! Make sure you check out the Shinsekai Street Food Tour next time you visit Osaka!

Matcha Kyoto Green Tea Tour Review: Arigato Japan

24 Aug 2019

I have been on multiple Arigato Japan tours because they’re so fun and interesting. After moving from Tokyo to Osaka, I made a couple trips to Kyoto which is Japan’s old capital, and rich in culture. During my second Kyoto visit I joined the Matcha Kyoto Green Tea Tour because I love Japanese food, culture, and of course, matcha!

After meeting at the train station, we paid a visit to a nearby shrine and learned some tidbits about Japanese culture along the way.

After the shrine visit, it was already time for lunch, which I’m always ready for! We went to a very local cha-soba (green tea soba) shop along the river. Even though the weather was hot, I decided to go for the hot soba and let me tell you, I was so happy I did! This was the best soba I’ve ever had, hands-down. It was incredibly flavorful, served with tempura and a few more perfect side dishes! So good.

We then crossed the bridge and headed over to a beautiful Buddhist temple. This temple actually appears on the ¥10 coin and originally opened in 998 AD. We toured around the museum just next-door to learn more about this beautiful structure.

It was incredibly hot during the tour so I was very excited that the next stop was for matcha ice cream. I’m not exaggerating when I say this was the best matcha ice cream I’ve ever had! It was a bit more viscous then I’ve experienced in the past and was sprinkled with matcha powder. I almost went for seconds!

The final stop for the tour was for a tea experience at a tea shop that first opened during the Tensho Era (March 7, 1131 – September 28, 1132.) We first visited their in-house museum and learned that several hundred years ago this highly valuable tea was commonly walked from Tokyo to Kyoto, which took about 2.5 weeks. We then got to grind the tea ourselves into matcha before enjoying it with a lovely treat. The whole experience was really eye-opening and enjoyable! The perfect Kyoto experience.

Once again, I was incredibly pleased with yet another Arigato Japan tour experience. The Matcha Kyoto Green Tea Tour definitely should be added to your list when you’re visiting Kyoto. Our tour guide was great throughout the day and knew a lot of fun facts. The food was magnificent, and the tea experience was very interesting as well. In conclusion, the Matcha Kyoto Green Tea Tour with Arigato Japan shouldn’t be missed!

Magical Trip Kyoto Night Foodie Tour Review

23 Jul 2019

It was my first trip to Kyoto and I enlisted the Magical Trip tour company for guidance. I wanted to get a lay of the land for the food and beverage options in the city, so I joined the Kyoto Night Foodie Tour which met at Gion-Shijo Station. The tour was made up of three stops for food and drink. After meeting, we were quickly on the way to our first destination which was a traditional Kyoto restaurant.

This area was clearly a popular tourist destination as we made our way through a sea of people to get there. Once we entered, we took off our shoes and found our table with a lovely view of the restaurant’s atrium. Magical Trip offered a pre-arranged menu which had a decent overview of the restaurant’s food and beverage options. Actually, every single item I ate at this restaurant was just perfect! I accompanied the delicious food with a large glass of sake. Out of all the dishes I tried, I think my favorite was the oden, which is a famous Japanese dish comprised of boiled items. It doesn’t sound very exciting but in reality, it was bursting with flavor!

It was on to the next stop, but not before passing through different areas of Kyoto and learning a little bit about Japanese culture along the way. With all of the beautiful historical buildings I could imagine what it must have been like hundreds of years ago. After winding down some very narrow streets, we ended up at the second stop, which was a sushi restaurant.

Here they also had a prepared menu for the tour that had a handful of items to choose from. Overall, I thought there was a decent variety of beverages and foods to try. The sushi I ordered was enjoyable, but didn’t blow my mind.

The last stop was a stand-up bar. It was possible to get more alcohol but instead I went with the Hojicha ice cream and oolong tea for a lovely finish! If you’re unfamiliar Hojicha is a roasted green tea and makes for a delicious ice cream flavor, especially rich and creamy.

Overall, Magical Trip’s Kyoto Night Foodie Tour was quite fun! There was a decent selection of food and drinks to try, as well as some fun facts to learn. Best Food Tour in Taipei: Taipei Eats Review

27 Apr 2019

Food tours tend to be one of my favorite ways to explore a city’s cuisine, so I sought out Taipei Eats for their Daodaxioqing Food Tour. Taipei eats has been operating in Taipei for about five years and really know how to put together a delicious and enjoyable tour!

After a quick introduction at the meeting point, we were soon on the move to explore food stalls nearby. The first really exciting bite was a soupy congee accompanied with pork belly and octopus. Tour guests have some freedom to make their own decisions during the tour. which was a nice touch. I must say this was the best congee I’ve ever had in my life! Soupier than usual, but just the right balance of flavor and texture.

The area surrounding the stalls was peaceful with a nearby temple that we paid a quick visit to, to learn about some local customs. Soon after, we were back to food and drink with some alcohol that was half medicinal and half rice wine. The group of local old men loved that I wanted to try it. Alcohol makes food tours way better, especially in the beginning. Good choice Taipei Eats!

Now I had a buzz and was in my happy place. I got to get even more buzzed with a nice stop at a beetle nut shop! Best tour ever! The food and drink also got better and better. There were about 10 different stops in total. The Taipei Eats guide was very knowledgeable about Taiwanese culture and history which I found very interesting because it was only my second visit to the country.

Another very memorable stop was the fish ball shop that originally opened in 1950 by a Chinese immigrant. These were some of the best fish balls I’ve ever had, even though I’ve lived in Southeast Asia for many years. I might have enjoyed them more because they came with chili oil, Taiwanese sushi, and Taiwanese style cabbage.

At 9:30 in the morning we met at the CookInn Taiwan kitchen, centrally located in the middle of the city. Once we got settled in, we were off to the food market to see where the locals shopped and learn some interesting facts along the way, we also stopped at the National Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall. The market was just nearby the kitchen, so it wasn’t very difficult to walk there, only about 10 minutes.

The whole experience was fairly well thought out from start to finish. The staff were friendly and the kitchen was very clean and modern. Toyosu Market Tour and Sushi Class: Sushi Mafia Tokyo Review

23 Mar 2019

In October of 2018, the famous Inner Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo closed, and a majority of the activities moved to the new and shiny Toyosu Fish Market. Now, a majority of visitors are no longer allowed to enter the commercial and wholesale areas of the Toyosu Market. The keyword here is most, I was allowed to enter this forbidden seafood haven because I joined the Tokyo Sushi Insider Workshop by Sushi Mafia which includes a VIP tour of the commercial area of the Toyosu Fish Market! If you didn’t remember, I also experienced the absolutely incredible Tokyo Sushi & Sake Night also by Sushi Mafia which you can read about here. This experience includes a sushi making class and lunch after the Toyosu Market tour by Morio Hori, a seasoned professional sushi chef.

The tour started at 9 in the morning at the ticket gate of the nearby Shijo-Mae station. Before I knew it, we were quickly entering the commercial area of the Toyosu Market where once again, tourists are generally not allowed. This felt very sneaky but actually, Sushi Mafia can offer this exclusive access. We got to see where professionals come to buy their raw ingredients, and I must say, it was very interesting! Just don’t get ran over by all of the speedy buggies driving around!

We spent some time exploring all the fresh items in the commercial area, and then moved on to the other market’s public area. The market area open to the public was basically a Japanese supermarket with a lot of extras. A great place to get souvenirs and taste tea!

After we had some samples and bought fish, we headed over to the Tsukiji Outer Market. We transferred in a very nice van provided by Sushi Mafia. Upon arrival, we entered a sea of people. While at the Tsukiji Outer Market, we got to witness how a fish goes from peacefully swimming in the water, to becoming ready to cook. It was interesting to see the process from start to finish, I had actually never seen it done with this much attention to detail before.

The tour portion of the experience had come to a close, and I was getting hungry! Luckily it was time to go back to the Sushi Mafia Lab to learn how to fillet fish and make sushi. The lesson started with watching a professional chef cut a large piece of tuna into slabs for sushi making. We got to sample it, perfectly fatty, it melted in my mouth like butter! Next, I learned all of the details for how to fillet a fish myself! They told me I was a natural, I hope they weren’t just being nice.

The next thing we knew, we had a giant plate of sashimi in front of us and were learning how to form sushi ourselves. I knew from last time that Sushi Mafia doesn’t play games with their ingredients, this fish was very high-quality and super tasty. I was quite proud of my sushi!

It was then time to eat our creations, and a few more supplied by the Sushi Mafia chefs. There’s also an option for sake pairing with the lunch, which I would recommend, as it doesn’t get much better than sushi and sake. Everything was absolutely delicious, including the fried sardines that were made from what we filleted earlier. Halfway through the meal, the chef seared sushi in front of us with a flame, and then added lemon and salt. This might be one of my new favorite ways to eat sushi, it was phenomenal!

After an incredibly action-packed day, the whole experience was coming to an end, unfortunately. With a full belly and a lot of knowledge, it was time to head home. I’d like to commend the whole Sushi Mafia team for doing a great job. All in all, I can highly recommend this experience with Sushi Mafia in Tokyo, Japan! This is an opportunity to learn an incredible amount as well as eating some very tasty food.

Arigato Food Tours Japan: Old Town Tokyo Food Tour Review

16 Mar 2019

We all have different ideas when it comes to Japanese culture. Some of us may think of the bustling metropolis of Tokyo, while others may think of low-rise traditional buildings with lots of history and rich culture. The latter is what I got to finally experience on the Old Town Tokyo Food Tour by Arigato Japan. I’ve been to Tokyo a few times and got to see different sides of the city, but sadly never have I been to this part of the citym until now!

The Old Town Tokyo Food Tour started off with a quick introduction to the group and the history of Yanaka. Yanaka has survived both World War II and multiple devastating earthquakes which decimated a large swath of the city.

The first food that got me truly excited was the minced meat cutlet! This deep-fried minced meat cutlet was absolutely bursting with flavor and juiciness. It was perfectly balanced, I could just keep eating and eating. We followed this up with a sweet treat.

I was super excited to go to the knife shop and test out some of the incredibly sharp knives. I cut a carrot like hot butter! After checking out the knives, we got to try sake on the street where we also discussed more about Japanese history and culture. I noticed that the area was filled with local people and has not yet turned into an oversaturated tourist hot spot. Refreshing.

For lunch, we had a soba meal which was the first cold soba that I truly enjoyed. Well done to Yanaka and Arigato Japan!

After our filling soba meal, we made our way down to the end of the Yanaka shopping street and turned to find our next dessert stop!

Not only did we get to try delicious food, but we got to learn about an intense drama that took place a few hundred years ago that started at a temple we visited and included lots of death. Very interesting indeed!

One of the final stops of the Old Town Tokyo Food Tour was probably my favorite stop, which was a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. I was caught up with a sense of peace and tranquility while I watched the woman prepare and serve our tea, one by one. The cup I drank from was 150 years old! We were served a salty and sweet snack that went very well with the slightly bitter tea. The tea experience was the cherry on top of the entire experience. This is a must if you visit Japan!

Towards the end of the tour, we made our way through a Japanese cemetery and to one final temple. This was a great way to wind down this action-packed tour! There was way more of a variety of cultural experiences in The Old Town Tokyo Food Tour than I ever could have imagined. The tour guides were very insightful and had lots interesting facts to offer throughout the tour. All in all, it was an absolutely wonderful experience which was way better than I expected and I can easily recommend you to try it when you’re in Tokyo, Japan!

Arigato Food Tours Japan: Luxury Tokyo Sake, Cocktail, Whisky and Pairing Tour Review

26 Feb 2019

When first arriving in Tokyo, it can be easy to become overwhelmed with all of the nightlife options this bustling metropolis has to offer. This is why on my latest visit, I sought out the services of Arigato Food Tours Japan. While looking through their experiences, I came across their Luxury Tokyo Sake, Cocktail, Whisky and Pairing Tour. The tour had five stops around the Shimbashi and Ginza areas of Tokyo. Along the way, there was lots of information provided which wasn’t always just about food and drink, but also about Japanese culture and history. Very interesting!

The first drink-stop of the tour was at a Japanese craft beer bar. There were tons of beers on tap, I went for the Coffee Stout which blew my mind! We had a few side dishes to take the edge off as well (I arrived super hungry) because I plan ahead for these things. Strategize!

Our tour guides (yes, plural) were quite insightful as they had both spent many years living in Japan. We had a short walk to our next destination which was also the first time that I’ve ever tried Matcha Beer. It may sound like it wouldn’t fit together but in actuality, it was absolutely delicious! We also sampled miso cheese and a few other side dishes. The miso cheese was my favorite for the food!

The alcohol started to work its magic on me and then it was time to go to a proper sake tasting. This was the most formal part of the tour as it was at high-end sake brand’s tasting room. We learned all about how they grind down the rice to make different qualities of sake. Long story short, the more the rice is ground down, the higher the quality of sake produced.

Towards the end of the evening, there were two stops that both offered great cocktails, but both were very different experiences. I liked the variety! The first venue was my style, very chic with good service, drinks, and atmosphere. I went for the Soba Caramel Banana Cocktail which was one of their Signature Tea Cocktails, it was a lovely dessert. I’d get another!

The final stop was at an underground bar with a very dark and mysterious theme. This was the cherry on top of the whole experience, and where I was able to sample some tasty and especially beautiful cocktails. As you can see from the photos, one had a giant cloud of cotton candy and the other had octopus! Another great venue. We finished off the drinks with some fantastic chocolate.

Arigato Food Tours Japan definitely enlightened me on where to spend my evenings in Tokyo. The Luxury Tokyo Sake, Cocktail, Whisky and Pairing Tour turned out to be very enjoyable and educational. I learned a lot more than I expected about a wide range of Japanese related topics. Adventure Guide: Must Try Activities in Maldives

16 Jun 2018

When planning my trip to the Maldives, I never expected for there to be so many activities to experience. While staying at the Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma I tried out several of their popular guided activities. I was pleasantly surprised by what I found.

The activity that stuck out the most was diving with sea turtles, astonishing. This was part of a Build Your Own Trip experience which included three activities: diving with turtles, visiting a small deserted island and spotting dolphins.

Adventure Guide: Must Try Activities in Maldives Asia Blog Maldives Tours

Seeing dolphins isn’t guaranteed but with the turtles it’s different because the resort knows exactly where they tend to feed. Seeing these majestic creatures was really an eye-opening experience. We swam for about 30 minutes, plenty of time to snap some great photos!

Another activity that I tried was the Sunset Cruise. This is fairly straightforward from the name. This guided activity consists of taking a medium-sized boat stocked with alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages to enjoy the sunset. The boat is also equipped with nets which hang off the side. This allowed guests to enjoy the water while cruising through the sea.

I also got to experience reefscaping. Reefscaping is the process of artificially rebuilding coral reefs. This is this was explained by their local marine biologist which I found quite interesting. We learned that the Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma is working to rejuvenate the local coral reefs with metal-framed coral reefs.

If you enjoy nature at all you will love the Maldives, so many beautiful things to see it! When you visit the Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma, I would highly recommend you try some of these exciting activities for yourself.
