Eau de Vie Restaurant Review (Beirut, Lebanon)

29 Dec 2015

I was off to a great start in Lebanon. I had checked in at the Phoenicia hotel and was already living the boss life. You know that I’m dead serious when I tell you to read the review of the hotel because it’s a masterpiece. At this point in the trip things were winding down. It was the last stop before it was off to Chicago to visit my family.

Pierre is an eating man who enjoys some food occasionally. Lucky for him there is a restaurant at the top of the Phoenicia hotel called Eau de Vie. I had taken a tour of the hotel earlier in the day and got to check out the magnificent view from the restaurant. I was thrilled to be there later for dinner!

Walking into the restaurant the first thing you’ll notice is the exquisite interior. They have glass hanging from the ceiling from front to back and this place is huge. What a beautiful sight! To top it off you have a magnificent view of the sea. Even though the dining room is very large and magnificent, the tables are spaced in a way that make it feel private and romantic.

Another amazing feature of this restaurant is the whiskey collection. When I heard that they had some very fine single malt whiskey I got super excited. I had to try a 24 year old whiskey from 1991 to warm up a little bit.

Pierre has made some good choices in life and this is one for the history books. Our server had been with the hotel for many years. He went abroad and then returned to continue working for the hotel. If that doesn’t tell you something good about a company then I don’t know what does. We got some recommendations from our friendly staff and then got down to business.

It was hard not set my expectations very high because of what I had experienced thus far in the hotel. I was having a fantastic time and already had ranked this hotel way up in the top of the top in my list of worldwide luxury hotels. Therefore, I would also expect a world-class dining experience.

We obviously had to go for some Lebanese wine while in Beirut. During this tour I really enjoyed trying all of the international wine. Lebanese wine ended up being one of my favorites throughout all of my journeys.

Okay okay relax, I’ll start talking about the food now. I know you’re excited! We didn’t go too crazy when ordering because our appetites weren’t that huge from so much eating.

The chefs obviously care deeply about what they’re creating because the food was fantastic! Perhaps the warm up alcohol had something to do with it but regardless everything I ate was quite wonderful.

Wanting to eat on the lighter side I ended up going for the prawns for my entrée. These were cooked just right, still nice and moist with good flavor to match.

I wouldn’t be able to write a review without trying the dessert so I had to order a couple and I was super happy with the results. Presentation of the food all looked very appealing and the style matched with the great tastes which is exactly what I look for when I go into a food review.

In my writing I try to focus on the food that I have enjoyed most to recommend to my readers. That being said, if you’re in Lebanon and you’re looking for great ambiance, food and service then pay a visit to Eau de Vie at the top of the Phoenicia hotel. I guarantee you won’t regret it!

Sydney’s Restaurant Review (Beirut, Lebanon)

23 Dec 2015

Both the Phoenicia and Le Vendome are part of the Intercontinental hotel group in Beirut and they’re both quite near one another. I have yet to experience a stay at Le Vendome but my people tell me it’s more of a boutique experience. Alas, Le Vendome has a notorious restaurant on the top floor called Sydney’s.

Sydney's Restaurant Review (Beirut, Lebanon) Asia Blog Food Lebanon

Apparently, Sydney was the name of the bartender that once worked there years ago. He was beloved by the community and often people would tell others that they were “going to Sydney’s.” Over time, the name stuck and now his legacy is carried on.

The first thing you’ll notice about the restaurant is the amazing view of the sea. Obviously, Pierre got the best table right beside the window. Even just sitting there and enjoying a drink is absolutely amazing.

Soon after our welcome drink it was time to order. I relied on the experience of our very friendly server. He recommended a few appetizers that turned out to be great. Out of the four the tacos were my favorite. Delicious. One salad was a bit overly sour (and I usually love sour) but after I told the server he was quick to have the kitchen remake it. The newer version was perfect and I commend them for this great service.

The wine that they selected for the meal paired effortlessly. A mix of Lebanese wine and foreign. I ordered a steak which at that time was the best steak I had in Beirut. It was cooked to perfection. Just how I like it with lots of pink inside. It just melted in my mouth.

To finish the meal we had some magnificent desserts. The desserts will go down in infamy. I ordered the Creme brulee tartlet. Just look at how beautiful it is! The taste was absolutely fabulous and to top it off they brought out some trays of other desserts. Of course you have to end every meal with a shot of espresso to get all the cylinders firing!

Sydney's Restaurant Review (Beirut, Lebanon) Asia Blog Food Lebanon

All in all, the meal was out of this world. Yes, there was a little stutter step in the beginning with the overly sour salad but they were quick to correct it and adjusted for my taste buds. This is the perfect place for almost all occasions and I highly recommend it. The view is magnificent, the food very tasty, the decor beautiful and wonderful service to top it off. A must try in Pierre’s book!

Le Gray Hotel Review (Beirut, Lebanon)

21 Dec 2015

While in Beirut I spent time staying at Le Gray hotel. The style is much different than the other hotels that I stayed at while on my 10 country tour of Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Le Gray is a boutique hotel focused on very creative designs. A few of my friends recommended me to stay at Le Gray and I was curious if it would live up to the praise I had heard about it.

Le Gray Hotel Review (Beirut, Lebanon) Asia Blog Hotels Lebanon

Upon my early afternoon arrival I was shown up to my room by the staff. On the way to the room I didn’t feel like I was in a hotel. It felt a bit different, perhaps more like an office building. Judging by the name of the hotel you can probably guess what the dominant color scheme is. Wink. I do appreciate people that are trying to do something different because the world would be boring if all hotels were the same. Good on you Le Gray.

Once inside the room I let my hotel judging eyes do some more work. It was a very large room with a nice view. The room was so big that I probably didn’t even have to use the gym to workout but just run laps around the inside of my room. The super high ceilings made everything feel extra spacious and reminded me of my time in Vienna.

One thing Pierre appreciated a lot was the impressive coffee machine in the closet. Too bad I didn’t have more work to do so I could spend more time binge drinking espresso locked away in my room. Coffee plus work is Pierre’s happy time.

They really focus on creative design even when it came to the bathroom. One feature I found really wonderful was the heated towel rack. It made it very convenient to dry the towels and other clothes I laid on it. The best part was that when you take your dried clothes off of the rack they are toasty warm like they were fresh out of the dryer. I love it!

After having dinner outside of the hotel I came back to the room to get some handsome sleep and to prepare for the breakfast the next day. I had heard a lot about the breakfast so I was very ecstatic to get there early! They offer a fantastic rooftop breakfast where you can order some items à la carte and also choose from their buffet. I ordered eggs royale because it’s one of my all time favorites. Le Gray has a great balance of international and Lebanese options to choose from. Everything included the breakfast was fantastic!

While at Le Gray I had a chance to try out their Pure Gray spa which you’ll be able to read about in a separate article. The gym was better than most standalone gyms and I really appreciated it. They have everything!  Lucky for me I had the entire place to myself! They also have a pool on their rooftop that is on another level. The design is breathtaking. Just take a look!

Le Gray Hotel Review (Beirut, Lebanon) Asia Blog Hotels Lebanon

The hotel is located in the downtown high-end shopping district. It’s right in the middle of the city so you can literally just step out of the hotel and go. This is very convenient and allowed me to see things that I wouldn’t have seen if I didn’t stay at Le Gray. Something very pleasant to note is that everyone at this hotel seems quite passionate about their work. It was very refreshing to meet people that cared so much.

Le Gray Hotel Review (Beirut, Lebanon) Asia Blog Hotels Lebanon

In conclusion, Le Gray hotel is a very nice boutique hotel and those who appreciate creative and modern designs will really enjoy it. It definitely has a very artistic sense to everything that they offer. The food and service were on point. It is a solid option if you are looking for a great place to stay while in Beirut. I stayed at Le Gray for two nights and before I knew it, it was time to move on to the next. It was sad to leave this wonderful place and if I have a chance to return to Le Gray hotel in Beirut I definitely will take it!

Phoenicia Hotel Review (Beirut, Lebanon)

19 Dec 2015

So this year I took my 10 country trip across Asia, Europe and the Middle East. The one country out of all 10 that I wanted to visit the most was Lebanon. In the past Beirut had some issues so I was hesitant to go but after some research decided it was time. The main reason I wanted to visit so badly was actually a very simple reason. As you can probably guess it’s because I love Lebanese food! I’ve eaten it all around the world and had a deep yearning to try it in its birthplace. Oh lawd was I happy! I stayed in Beirut for a total of 10 days and met tons of friends, ate fantastic food and had some great experiences!

I landed in Beirut from Switzerland in the middle of the night. Luckily the Phoenicia hotel was kind enough to send a driver to pick me up at the airport with a Jaguar. No not the animal, the car! A very kind and warm welcome indeed!

It was so late that they actually allowed me to check-in while inside the elevator. Talk about VIP! This definitely put a smile on my face. After a month of non-stop eating I had mixed feelings about all of the treats they left for me in the room. These included traditional Middle Eastern desserts and also some cake pops and chocolates. I knew I couldn’t say no to trying these so I wished my thin waistline farewell and dug in! All were magical! Then I passed out in a sugar induced coma.

The room I got was epic! Very well done overall. The bathroom was marble and beautiful tile. The view was beautiful. The only downside was that there was no coffee machine in the room just a kettle but I survived and ordered room service. Life is hard.

The next morning I awoke from my slumber and hit the gym. They have an excellent gym that overlooks a courtyard which is their Amethyste lounge and it’s magnificent. It’s nice to have such a beautiful scene to look at while working out. It’s a huge gym which has everything you could possibly need to get thin or ripped.

I cleaned myself up after getting incredibly huge at the gym and then mentally prepared for breakfast. Walking into the breakfast dining room was like walking into a magical world of Lebanese food. This is what I’ve dreamed of folks. Counter after counter of Lebanese and international options. I couldn’t resist trying a little bit of everything including the freshly made Lebanese bread.

Walking around the hotel is absolutely amazing. This is the oldest and most well known Hotel in Beirut. It takes class to another level. All of the interior is so beautifully designed. It reminds me of my palace. Wink. The weather in Beirut was perfect for exploring. The hotel is situated along the water and from my room I could see Zaytona bay.

During my stay there was a day that I didn’t want to leave my room because I was getting so much work done. I decided to order room service and I have to say it quite possibly was the best decision of my life. This turned out to be my dream meal. I ordered a mixed grill, french fries, tabboulleh, a milk shake and a Turkish coffee for afterwards. I cried tears of joy. It was fantastic! Pure love.

I spent 10 days in Beirut but when it came time to leave I didn’t want to go. It feels like I just barely scratched the surface of all this city has to offer. In the future I hope to return and spend more time discovering all that I missed. The Phoenicia hotel was my introduction to Lebanon and I don’t think I could have chose a better place to stay. The way the staff treated me made me feel like royalty. The food that was served was phenomenal and the design impeccable. The Phoenicia is now one of my top hotels worldwide. Hotel Bristol: Poland’s Most Iconic Hotel Reviewed

15 Dec 2015

It’s crazy to imagine that the entire city of Warsaw was leveled in the second world war. Amazingly, Hotel Bristol was one of the very few buildings to survive the intense bombings. I learned that a bomb did strike the hotel. However, it did not successfully explode and therefore the building was saved. The hotel was actually built in 1901 making it 114 years old! Another fun fact is that Hotel Bristol houses Poland’s first elevator but I didn’t learn this until after my stay.

Click HERE to check out the Hotel Bristol!

I had just finished up my time in Prague and traveled to Warsaw to spend a few days exploring and of course eating! During my time there I was fortunate enough to stay at Hotel Bristol. The hotel is part of the Luxury Collection which is a group of high-end and classic hotels offered by Starwood hotels. I’m sure you read about Hotel Imperial in Vienna which I stayed at during this same tour. If not, make sure you go check it out! Vienna was fantastic but let’s get back to Warsaw. Hotel Bristol is an icon in Warsaw. Anyone that I spoke with in Warsaw was quite familiar with the hotel.

After a speedy check-in process I headed up to the room in their classic elevator. My room had a view of a small park that is next to the hotel. The hotel is in a perfect place to explore the city center. Super convenient indeed. Only a few minutes’ walk and you’re at the castle that was rebuilt after the second world war. Also, I can’t forget their delicious welcome torte along with a welcoming letter. Heart warming.

The room was cleanly styled and I liked the vibe of everything. It wasn’t super extravagant but more minimal. I do appreciate the fact that they didn’t try to reinvent the wheel. What I mean is that they didn’t try to remodel the hotel too much. They kept the original styling which I believe is for the best!

After a tough evening of exploring and drinking around town with some friends it was back to get my sleep! The next morning I headed down to the lower levels of the hotel to visit the gym and spa area. The gym is quite small as expected but had quality equipment which was plenty for me. After getting my swell on I hit the steam room and checked out the pool. Both were nice and as I would expect for a hotel with such history.

The breakfast is where it got a bit more exciting for Pierre! The dining room where the breakfast was is simply beautiful. It kept the classical elegance of the hotel’s original styling and offered some amazing food. They had a lot of authentic Polish cuisine which I really loved! Lots of pickled items! A little sour to balance my sweet personality. Wink.

The hotel also has an amazing café called Café Bristol which I had a quick meeting at and enjoyed some dessert and coffee. Definitely a must visit! While there I saw a woman who I was told has been visiting every single day for decades so if that’s not a sign of quality I don’t know what is.

When it was finally time to leave Poland I was honestly quite sad. I felt like 2 nights was really not enough time to really explore Warsaw. I’m sure in the future I will spend more time there to see what else the city has to offer! That being said, the hotel was perfect. A very solid offering in an iconic hotel. I’m sure most would enjoy the hotel and I definitely would guide people to pay a visit to Hotel Bristol in the future!

La Rotonde Restaurant Review (Prague, Czech Republic)

13 Dec 2015

My trip to the Radisson Blu in Prague was full of pleasant surprises. I guess this is also the summary of my life. Wink. I only stayed at one hotel while in Prague and I must say that I very much enjoyed the food quality. Who would have guessed that one Radisson Blu could offer so much great food! Pierre was skipping around with a happy tummy.

Make sure you read about my stay at the Radisson Blu in Prague in this article. Years in the future what I will remember about Prague will be all of my fantastic dining experiences. The first full day in Prague I decided to eat lunch with my friend at their Michelin starred restaurant called Alcron. I’m ordering you to read the review here!

The following day we had dinner at La Rotando which is about 5 meters from Alcron. You’re not seeing double, this is also where the hotel breakfast is served. However, during the evening the atmosphere completely changes. All of a sudden you are transferred to a mystical fine dining experience.

During our meal we were offered a plethora of wonderful Czech wines. They all made nice additions to the food that was served. I had no idea before coming to Prague that they had such great wines! Fantastic.

People are often amazed that I can remember the specifics about my meals and hotel stays months and years after they occur. For some reason my memory is driven mostly by my taste buds. Just thinking about this food now is making all of the flavors and textures come right back to me.

There were two items that stood out in this meal. First was the very heartwarming pasta dish. Second had to be the phenomenal dessert. It took us a few moments to figure out the English name of the fruit which turned out to be a Kumquat and was quite amazing.

Master & Dynamic MH40 Headphone Review

10 Dec 2015

For a while I was looking for a solid pair of headphones to use during my travels that not only have a high build quality but also offer great sound. There was so much to consider especially because I live minimally. If you keep up with my blog, you’ll have read the article where I talk about how I have sold almost all of my excess personal possessions to free my mind and make it easier to travel.

Master & Dynamic MH40 Headphone Review Blog Products

Anyways, I came across the Master & Dynamic MH40 headphones and decided to give them a try. I was going out on a limb because I had never heard of the brand but the reviews spoke loudly (no pun intended or maybe it was a headphone joke) and I went for it. The day that they came in the mail got me super excited!

Master & Dynamic MH40 Headphone Review Blog Products

Master & Dynamic MH40 Headphone Review Blog Products

The first thing I noticed while un-boxing them was how high-quality everything was right down to the packaging. The little things like this truly make a strong impression on me. Once I got them out and figured out how everything worked in about 1 minute I had them on my head cranking music!

Woah there Pierre slow it down! I’m getting a little ahead of myself. You probably want to know what was included in the box.

Included in the Box

  • Master & Dynamic MH40 Headphone
  • 1 headphone cable that can attach on both left and right sides
  • 1 headphone cable with included microphone and controls that can also attach on both left and right sides
  • Canvas carrying case
  • Leather cable box
  • 3.5/6.3mm gold-plated adapter

Now that we have that out of the way we can get back to business. You know when you pick something up and you can just feel the quality? That is the best way to describe these headphones. The build quality is very high and they have a little heft to them. It was game time!

Master & Dynamic MH40 Headphone Review Blog Products

Compared to what I had before it was like night and day. I feel that all of my years of audio production and recording experience have trained me to know what to look for. I must say that I do enjoy listening to many types of music. Pierre can get down with anything from classical to death metal to hip-hop so it’s important to be able to handle everything and these definitely do. I won’t lie, I truly enjoy bass. I’m always boosting the bass when I listen to hip-hop but with these it isn’t necessary.

Master & Dynamic MH40 Headphone Review Blog Products

Some reviews I’ve read say that they’re a bit bass heavy but to me they embellish the parts of the audio spectrum I appreciate the most. I think no matter what type of music I listen to they offer a very full and warm sound. This comes down to your personal preference. For me, over-ear headphones that aren’t that big is a plus. I’ve had a chance to take them on a few trips and they easily slid into my laptop case. This was one of the biggest factors for me to consider.

When it comes to comfort they’re soft and comfortable on my head. This might be a personal issue but I notice when I wear over-ear headphones for too long that the top of my head gets a little sore. The MH40s are on the heavier end of the spectrum but not sure if it’s the weight or just all over-ear headphones that cause Pierre’s fragile head this issue.

Overall, I truly do enjoy the headphones and plan to enjoy lots of music with them into the future. This has been a great introduction to the Master & Dynamic brand. I’m very excited to try out more of their products in the future! For now, I will enjoy these by taking them with me as I travel the world and I definitely recommend you to give them a try too!

For a while I was looking for a solid pair of headphones to use during my travels that not only have a high build quality but also offer great sound. There was so much to consider especially because I live minimally. If you keep up with my blog, you'll have…

Fine Dining in Prague

09 Dec 2015

For the past three years the Alcron restaurant in Prague has received a Michelin star rating. When I visited Prague and stayed at the Radisson Blu I had to take the opportunity to pay a visit! The Alcron restaurant is located just past the check-in counter of the hotel. From the outside looking in the restaurant is quite small and doesn’t give off any sort of feeling that would make you assume that it’s a Michelin starred restaurant. However, looks may be deceiving because once I sunk into some of the food I have to say I was a complete believer of why they received the rating.

We started the meal off with some fantastic wine along with some bread and butter that was truly great. I know most people aren’t going to talk much about the butter but this butter was exceptional! Come on who doesn’t love butter? Immediately after the bread and butter there was some cheese that was also super fabulous.

The service staff was on point with how they conducted their business. It was also evident that a lot of passion went into the food creation. Once it came to the entrees I must say that the tastes just got better and better! It was one of those meals where everything I ate I enjoyed thoroughly. These come once in a blue moon so when they do occur Pierre has to really take note and appreciate them fully. This is the good life.

Last and certainly not least were the desserts. Both were amazing and I thought that the plating was beautiful. The taste matched the beauty of the presentation completely.

Going in I had zero expectations and this served me well because I was thrilled with everything. The food and the service were both wonderful but the decor had a little bit more to be improved upon. This restaurant first opened in 1932 which is quite impressive. Overall, I would highly recommend that if you’re looking for a fantastic fine dining experience in Prague to visit the Alcron restaurant at the Radisson Blu hotel!

Radisson Blu Hotel Review (Prague, Czech Republic)

08 Dec 2015

I came to Prague after my time in Frankfurt, Germany. Prague was a destination that I had held very high on my bucket list. That’s why I had super high expectations for my time there. Generally, it’s not the best idea to set your expectations too high because you might get crushed. However, all in all, my time in the Czech Republic was very enjoyable and I honestly think that I need to spend more time there exploring. I can foresee another trip in the not so distant future. Wink wink.

I arrived in Prague in the middle of the night and really had no idea exactly where the Radisson Blu hotel was except for the subway station name. Not only did I not know exactly where it was but I got off at the wrong station so I was wandering around for a while. However, I was in no rush and wanted to explore so this was just fine. Shout out to McDonald’s because I was able to pick up some free Wi-Fi which helped me find the hotel. The hotel is actually in a very convenient location and perfect for exploring the city!

Once I made it to the hotel I was greeted by a very warm and welcoming staff who were of course expecting me. They confirmed all of my details and I was shown to my room to retire after my strenuous travels. The hotel is not the newest of hotels but the quality of service and offerings that they have were very inline with other high-end luxury hotels. That being said the room had a little bit of a dated feel but it was still nice and I enjoyed my time there.

I have a good friend who is Czech and he introduced me to Becherovka which is an herbal bitters. To my astonishment when I got into my room the staff had prepared a bottle and some Czech sweets for me. I was starving after my flight and ready to eat just about anything so these probably saved my life. Thank you Radisson Blu.

I know I know, I probably should have wandered around more during my first night there but I was just so exhausted that I wanted to go to sleep. The next day I made my way down to the gym to enjoy a great workout. Something special that I noticed in their gym was flavored water. In all of the hotels I’ve stayed at they never offered it like this. Cheers! There were different pitchers of water but all had different fruits and herbs flavoring the water. It was so refreshing after my workout.

Back up to the room to get cleaned up and ready for breakfast. I made my way down to La Rotonde restaurant for breakfast. The styling is classic and fits Pierre perfectly. I had a dinner there that you’ll have to read about in a separate article. White linens and great service are basically the key takeaways of this place. I was really impressed with the size of their buffet and the quality of the food. Honestly, I did not expect for it all to be so great! Luckily, I had more than one night to enjoy the Radisson Blu and all of the food!

When it’s all said and done and as you can probably tell by now, I really enjoyed myself in Prague and specifically at this hotel. I would be happy to return in the future! Prague really has a nice charm to it. The people and the experiences that I had while there were nothing less than great! If you are looking for a great location to explore the city along with great service and wonderful food I would not hesitate to recommend you to stay at the Radisson Blu Prague.

Fine Italian Food in Prague (CottoCrudo Restaurant Review)

06 Dec 2015

While in Prague I found lots of amazing food. We all know that this makes Pierre incredibly happy. Even though I didn’t visit Italy during this 10 country tour, I did eat lots of Italian food. My favorite Italian food of the entire trip was at CottoCrudo in Prague at the Four Seasons Hotel.

The restaurant is overlooking the Vitava river in Prague. It was a perfect day and the atmosphere in the restaurant was fabulous! We started the experience with some fantastic wine and beef tartare. At this point, all of you surely know how big of a fan Pierre is of beef tartare!

After the magnificent appetizers were the entrées of lamb and an order of lobster pasta! I can confidently say that the food tastes just as good as the photos, if not better (if that’s possible.) I don’t care what time of day it is, it’s really hard to go wrong with wine and lobster pasta.

The service throughout our dining experience was very well done. Everyone was very helpful and knowledgeable when I had questions. The whole meal turned out to be flawless.

To finish off the lunch of course we had to try some of their fantastic desserts, cheese and espresso. I went on a huge coffee binge during my travels. It’s hard to stop when you’re always being offered magnificent espresso. It’s important to note that at the CottoCrudo coffee is taken very seriously! They have coffee selections from Brazil, Guatemala and Ethiopia. This all depends on what your personal preference is and I must say I enjoyed them thoroughly.

When it’s all said and done I truly enjoyed a magnificent lunch at the CottoCrudo restaurant inside of the Four Seasons hotel. The service, ambiance and taste were exceptional. I recommend that you visit the next time you’re in Prague!
