Beijing Travel Video: Luxury Travel Vlog 2016

29 Nov 2016

I’ve had the pleasure of living in Asia for five years. However, throughout my time living in countries such as Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong and Korea I never took a trip to the motherland! For some reason I had it in my head that I wouldn’t enjoy myself so I held off on visiting.

In 2016 everything changed. I decided to suck it up, get a 10-year visa and check out what China had to offer. I hit two of the biggest cities which are Beijing and Shanghai.

Beijing was my first stop and I was very impressed. Everything was so much more thrilling than I ever imagined. When it was all said and done, I’m super happy I went and can’t wait to go back! The city is very rich in history and culture. This is a big change from Shanghai but we’ll get to that when I release that video next week!

Here’s a glimpse of my two weeks in Beijing!

Aria Restaurant Review (Beijing, China)

10 Oct 2016

China World hotel is a classic in Beijing. Inside they have a restaurant called Aria. Aria is a fine dining restaurant and currently has a Spanish chef so there are lots of Spanish influences.

The dining room is fairly old-school and there weren’t very many customers when we arrived. To start the meal off, we went with champagne, of course. Following was an appetizer plate. I especially enjoyed the salmon ceviche.

The rest of the food had a great appearance but not all of the dishes got me excited. When things started to get interesting was at the time of the spinach risotto. The risotto was cooked perfectly and the seafood as well.

Now it was time for the main event, the Australian wagyu sirloin. This was of course accompanied with a lovely 2011 Therra PoderNuovo. The steak was cooked absolutely perfectly and melted in my mouth like an ice cube. This was by far the best part of the evening!

With such a feast, we had to finish it off with an impressive dessert. This dessert was a chocolate ball in which they lit on fire and melted before our eyes. I love when they do a little something extra for dessert. Fire on the table is always a nice touch! Overall, the meal and the dining experience at Aria was pleasant. Not all of the dishes were super impressive but most I did enjoy. When it was all said and done, I had a great evening.

Shangri-La China World Hotel Review (Beijing, China)

09 Oct 2016

My last hotel in Beijing during my first trip to China, was the China World Shangri-La hotel in the Central Business District of Beijing. When I walked into the lobby, I felt right at home. The public areas are glamorous. This means lots of shiny things like chandeliers, bright skylights and marble floors. Yes, it’s the traditional luxury that the Pierre loves.

My giant room with a great view happened to be one that was recently updated. It definitely had plenty of space to stretch-out. There was a city view of a very busy intersection. Inside the room you’ll find a large seating area, a great desk for working and an impressive bathroom with both shower and bathtub.

I’m so fortunate, they recently updated their lounge and business center on the third floor. The theme is very similar to my room with lots of blue and dark green colors. They match these colors with gray and this gives quite a nice business feel. On my tour of the premise, I was informed about their large spaces for hosting events. If you’re interested in getting married or having a conference in Beijing, this is the place to do it.

Let’s get back to the lounge! The offering is quite extensive and obviously includes a grand breakfast, afternoon tea and a full-sized dinner. The food is great and they have so many options to choose from. One of the nights, they even had nachos! Plus 200 points!

The lobby is super gorgeous as I’ve mentioned and it is a great place for afternoon tea. They have live music which adds an elegance to the property.

They have a gym in the basement and it’s quite large. Although giant, it could use a bit of an update. Also, it’s important to note that they opened the gym to members from the outside so this leads to being quite busy during peak hours.

I love classic hotels that have a lot to offer. The lobby is a beautiful sight to see, the F&B outlets are great and the lounge is pure quality. During my stay, I had a chance to try their Aria restaurant which you have to read about in a separate article. Grill 79 Restaurant Review (Beijing, China)

07 Oct 2016

Are you looking for one of the best views in all of Beijing? Well look no further than Grill 79 inside of the China World Summit Wing hotel in the Central Business District. From the name, you can tell that the grill is located on the 79th floor.

After being seated at a very comfortable sofa we got right to business and ordered a charcuterie plate. This was a great way to start the meal and it was accompanied with warm bread. I knew that steak was coming later in the evening so I also ordered a Shiraz. Full-bodied wine is just what I wanted with steak.

Surprisingly, even though we ordered two different qualities of wagyu steak, they both tasted quite similar but good. To accompany the meat we went with an order of French fries sprinkled with truffle and a side of broccoli to make us look healthy. Actually, I really enjoyed the greens!

This wasn’t a complex meal folks. You don’t need that many extras when you order giant slabs of meat. For dessert however, we went with a beautiful dessert wine from Austria called Kracher. To accompany our wine was a beautiful deconstructed tiramisu. They paired perfectly!

Shangri-La China World Summit Wing Hotel: Beijing’s Best View

06 Oct 2016

Lots of thoughts come to mind when I think of the Shangri-La China World Summit Wing hotel in Beijin1. The most notable thing about the hotel is the fact that it is 81 stories tall. This behemoth of a building offers spectacular views of Beijing’s Central Business District and beyond. The hotel lobby is actually located on the 64th floor. The hotel operates from the 64th floor up. This is just one Shangri-La hotel of four in the China World complex. I’ve never seen so many Shangri-La branded hotels in such a small area, there are six in the whole of Beijing!

After checking in and meeting the hotel staff, I quickly headed up to the 68th floor to check out my room. When I entered, there was lots of sunlight bursting through the windows. Once the sun went down a little, I was able to get some gorgeous photos of this beautiful room. The part I liked most about the room would be the bathtub and its view. Another part of the room I enjoyed was the large mural behind the bed. The huge painting really adds the Shangri-La touch to the design. I wouldn’t have chose every part of the room myself but overall it offered a nice business feel.

Even though I was just arriving from a day-long tour of the Great Wall, I was ready to hit the gym and burn a few extra calories. The gym covers a large area and has a very extensive amount of equipment. I especially liked the fact that they have plenty of places to do chin-ups and other body-weight exercises. Once finished with my workout, I headed into the locker room to see what they had to offer. A beautiful feature of the locker room would be the giant relaxation pool and of course the sauna and steam room. The pool is just around the corner and has a very unique design. The pillars are offset and provide a very futuristic feel.

Not long after my workout and it was time for rest. The next morning I headed to Grill 79 restaurant for breakfast. It’s important to mention that I also enjoyed dinner there as well and you’ll be able to read about that experience in a another article. I was recently in Malaysia where I was introduced to the beauty that is Laksa. When I saw it on the menu, I had to order and I was very happy that I did. These were some fantastic spicy noodles! The taste was not altered from the authentic taste and I really enjoyed breakfast. In addition to an à la carte menu, they have a very wide-selection at their local and international breakfast buffet. Everything was great. Seriously!

In summary, I’ve always been a fan of the Shangri-La brand and I don’t see it changing anytime soon. The Shangri-la China World Summit Wing hotel in Beijing was delightful. Minus a few interesting design choices, I really enjoyed my stay overall. The staff was pleasant and you really can enjoy the view, it’s beautiful. Great Wall of China Luxury Tour

05 Oct 2016

When you go to Beijing, one of the things you absolutely must do is of course visit The Great Wall of China! There are so many different tour companies and ways to see the wall that you might become overwhelmed. Luckily, I did the research for you and found the best way to see this incredible world wonder with My Odyssey Tours.

The driver and tour guide picked me up with a luxury car from my hotel at 8:30 am sharp. I chose to book a private tour so I was able to customize it to my liking. For the day’s itinerary, we planned to visit the Ming tombs, have lunch and then of course the Great Wall before returning back to the hotel at 4 pm. The Ming tombs are about 1 hour and 20 minutes away from the center of Beijing. These 600-year-old tombs are absolutely breathtaking. My tour guide, Laura, offered me some very interesting facts along the way. This really helped to enrich my experience and understanding of China’s history.

In between the Ming tombs and the Great Wall, there is a beautiful resort called Brickyard. We stopped there for a tasty lunch. They have both Chinese and Western options. I went with the chicken curry and Chinese dumplings. The tastes were slightly adapted for Western palates.

I have to say my excitement was building every moment of the way! We arrived and it was off to quickly collect the tickets and then hop on the lift to reach the Great Wall. I was really impressed by how streamlined the processes. In my head, I pictured strenuous hiking but in reality, it took very little effort to get to the Great Wall.

Once on top of the wall, I was educated more about the history of China and how the wall was used for defense purposes in the past. Of course My Odyssey Tours was well prepared and sure to bring along a bottle of champagne to enjoy at the top! It really was a nice way to spend the afternoon.

A little bit more exploring of the Great Wall and then it was time to head back to the city. You could take the chairlift down, walk or take a luge! I went for the luge. Something simple but exciting I must say. You’re able to control the speed with a break but my goal was to go as fast as possible. The course was actually fairly long and extremely fun. Before I knew it, we were at the bottom. At this point it was back to the car with my green bean ice cream, which I was very curious about trying. The driver prepared some cold beverages at the car as well, talk about service.

The tour was super smooth the entire day. From start to finish, it was effortless. It was such an easy and efficient way to seeing The Great Wall of China. Seriously. The service was great, informative, fun and easy. My Odyssey Tours definitely has my highest recommendation and I’m sure you will have a great time like I did on your next tour!

The Opposite House Review: Beijing’s Most Beautiful Design Hotel

04 Oct 2016

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I love high-end luxury hotels. However, there is always a large place in my heart for a beautiful design hotel. Recently, I was lucky enough to stay at a design hotel that offers high-end luxury service and amenities! This was during my first trip to China where I had the pleasure of visiting The Opposite House hotel in Beijing.

The property is located in the Sanlitun area of Beijing which is known for shopping, embassies and nightlife. It’s really hard to get an idea of what the rooms will be like when you walk into the lobby. There is a giant sheet hanging from the ceiling. There is a lot of open space with artwork all over the place. It feels more like an art gallery than a hotel.

The Opposite House Review: Beijing's Most Beautiful Design Hotel Asia Beijing Blog China Hotels

After checking in, I headed up to the fifth floor to see my room! On the way there, I noticed the extensive use of wood in the hallways accompanied with glass and metal accents. This gave a more industrial feel than what you typically see in most hotels.

When you enter the room, the feeling is warmer. It literally feels like you’re walking into that stereotypical image of heaven. Most things you see are white and fluffy. They do use a lot of wood, but everything is very light in color. Lots of straight edges and lines which make the room feel very large. Long story short, I fell in love when I walked in. The sink and the bathtub are just amazingly beautiful. I felt like everything in the room was a piece of art!

They have an iPad on the desk which you can use for ordering room service. I was able to use this several times throughout my stay to order some magnificent dishes off the room service menu and I would recommend you to do the same. One of these amazing meals was their HU burger. When I order cheeseburgers in Asia, I usually don’t get my hopes up, but this burger rivaled many burgers I’ve had around the world. Cheers Opposite House.

While we are on the topic of food, lets go ahead and discuss breakfast. For the first morning, I went with the village BIG brekky. I’m a fan of Western breakfast and I wanted to see what kind of skills they had in the kitchen. When it comes to Western breakfast, the biggest way to screw it up is usually with the meat. However, at The Opposite House, they provided both amazing sausages and bacon. I had the pleasure of sitting outside surrounded by greenery.

Seriously, this place is a masterpiece, check out the pool and gym area! The pool looks like it’s on fire, literally. Don’t worry, it’s not, but it is on fire in the sense that it’s gorgeous. In the typical fashion, the gym is overlooking the pool. The gym and locker room aren’t the most impressive in size but they do offer quite a punch. There is a steam room in the locker room but no dry sauna.

Looking at this property as a whole, I was greatly impressed by the design and all that it has to offer. Every time I think I’ve seen the best design hotel, I visit another that beats the last! The Opposite House is now at the top of my list. Not only is it beautiful but it has great service to match. If you want a glorious and unique experience while in Beijing, I highly recommend you to visit The Opposite House hotel in Sanlitun.

Jing Yaa Tang Restaurant Review (Beijing, China)

02 Oct 2016

While staying at the Opposite House hotel in Beijing, China, I definitely wanted to eat at their Chinese restaurant. The name is Jing Yaa Tang and it’s located on the lower ground floor. When you walk into the restaurant, you feel like you’re on the set of a movie. The dining room is very stylish and although large, feels quite private at the tables. Our table was in the center of the action but it felt like we were alone.

To get the party started, we ordered a couple glasses of the pinot noir from New Zealand. At the same time the spicy Szechuan chicken arrived. Both were fantastic and I was getting excited for what else was coming!

I’ve had eggplant many a times but usually only when it was prepared Italian style. This was the first time I’ve ordered Chinese style eggplant and it was very memorable. Although oily, there was so much flavor! It was both sour and spicy along with a little sweet. It really enticed the senses.

Of course, when in Beijing at a Chinese restaurant, you’ll have to order the Beijing duck. For this, I had to put in the order in advance before arriving at the restaurant to assure we would have it on time. We went for the full duck! Go big or go home! The taste really comes down to how you prepare your duck tacos. If you’re not familiar, they bring you crepes and side dishes including cucumber, sweet sauce, garlic and in this case cantaloupe. You’re able to put this all together to make a duck taco of your liking. Pierre’s professional advice would be to add extra sauce!

I loved this meal because I love trying new things. I’ve had both Beijing duck and the Szechuan chicken before. However, this was my first time for the eggplant of this style. The restaurant was super busy which shows its popularity. If you haven’t, make sure you read my Opposite House hotel article. Everything considered, I had a great evening at the Jing Yaa Tang restaurant inside of the Opposite House hotel and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend you to check it out for yourself.

Rosewood Hotel Review: Stylish Luxury in Beijing

01 Oct 2016

During my recent trip to Beijing, I was able to stay in some of the finest hotels that the city has to offer. One of these fine hotels was the Rosewood. This is a high-end luxury hotel located not far from the center of the city in the Central Business District. It’s in the center of the action, surrounded by many high-rises. The design of the hotel is quite stylish. It’s very welcoming and feels comfortable. Starting with the lobby, you’ll notice lots of beautiful furniture. The staff was pleasant and quickly checked me in.

One of my favorite parts of the whole Rosewood property would have to be the spa, pool and gym area. Walking into the spa brings you to another world of relaxation. You’ll walk down the corridor of mood lighting and then across a small bridge into the reception area of the spa. I was able to visit the area three times during my stay and greatly enjoyed myself there. The changing room was simply flawless with all of the products you need to look your best and feel great. I can’t forget to mention I also went for a massage there, you’ll have to read about it in a separate article.

Another fantastic feature of the hotel is there Manner Club on the seventh floor. In most hotels, this would be called the executive lounge. However, the Manner Club is a bit more grand than most executive lounges. Not only is it incredibly large, it offers three different areas according to your preference. When you walk in, it’s the typical lounge feeling, when you move to the next room, you’ll enter a bright area filled daylight. Finally, in the last and final area, there is a dark and mysterious area like a low-lit bar. It’s really quite gorgeous.

The lounge offers breakfast, afternoon tea and an evening cocktail hour. During my stay, I was able to eat at both breakfast locations as well as having dinner at their Red Bowl restaurant which is a Chinese hot pot restaurant. The quality of the food is very high and they always had a great selection for all meals.

It was a bit sad when the stay was over. The property felt like home and I really enjoyed my time there. I’d be happy to return on my next trip to Beijing! What really stands out for the property would have to be the food and beverage. There isn’t much to do to improve this hotel, it’s great. If you’re looking for a place to stay that is warm and welcoming with everything you need to live the boss life, then I would recommend you to stay at the Rosewood hotel in Beijing!

Sense Spa at Rosewood Hotel Beijing

30 Sep 2016

The Rosewood hotel in Beijing has a beautiful spa. As soon as you step out of the elevator, you step into a world of relaxation and harmony. I arrived about 45 minutes before my appointment time to ensure I had a moment to use the relaxation rooms including the steam room and sauna. Everything fits together like a glove. It’s definitely a wonderful place to relax!

Upon arrival they serve you your choice of green tea or date tea. I went with the date tea because it’s not so common for me and I like to explore!

After beginning my relaxation in the sauna, it was time for the massage. I went with their signature treatment for 60 minutes and my masseuse was fantastic. She really focused on my troubled areas which tend to be my tight shoulders. A little painful, but in a good way because afterwards, I walked out of there feeling light as a cloud.
