The competition for luxury hotels in Shanghai is very fierce. Many claim to be the best and I’ve heard tons of conflicting opinions. Lately, I’ve read a lot about The Puli hotel and decided to give them a shot on my most recent trip. The hotel is located fantastically, just next to the Jing’an Temple metro station. This is not the center of the city, but there is lots going on, including great shopping and wonderful restaurants!

Entering the hotel feels a lot like observing a fine piece of art. There are sculptures and artwork everywhere along with comfortable sofas. They have a counter that runs the entire length of the lobby, which is used as a bar and check in counter. The hotel offers club room benefits in addition to its normal rooms. This is basically everything you’d expect at a normal executive lounge but it takes place in the lobby. I was very happy with this style.
The club benefits include soft drinks, tea and coffee throughout the day, afternoon tea, an à la cart menu for dinner and of course happy hour. It was nice to take a break from the normal buffet style executive lounges that most five-star hotels offer their club guests. Not too many hotels offer the all-inclusive afternoon tea sets with their club access, but The Puli does!
It took some time to get acquainted with the room because there were so many small details to notice. The minibar was completely complementary! We were off to a great start. Moving deeper into the room, is a beautiful table and chairs where I got my work done. There was also a splendid bathtub and very comfortable bed.
The gym is not large in size, but has fantastic equipment that really does the job. Also, there’s a beautiful view of the park below. Once you finish your workout, you must check out the changing rooms. They have a beautiful hot tub, sauna, steam room as well as rain shower! There are many self-care products on site to make sure you look your best.
The pool is something special. It’s quite long and great for swimming laps. The design is somewhat unique and creates a very calm and relaxing atmosphere. Stunning!
The breakfast is in their Phenix restaurant. When you walk in, you’ll see line after line of buffet options. Of course, they also have a fantastic a la carte menu to choose from as well. Not all items are created equal. I would recommend the bakery items for the buffet and the eggs benedict on the a la carte menu. Overall, the food could use a little bit of improvement.
I really loved the majority of what The Puli has to offer! It could use a little improvement in the food and beverage department, but everything else was on point. The service was fast fantastic for the entirety of my stay. Little things like how they delivered all my laundry in separate bags was a nice touch. The surrounding area is great to explore and the design is super beautiful. Overall, I would be happy to recommend The Puli hotel in Shanghai, China!
