Amazing French Cuisine in Vienna

31 May 2016

On the top floor of the Grand Hotel Wien, there are two restaurants. One of them is called Le Ciel. From their website it says that the food combines elements of classic French cuisine with Austrian accents.

The first feature I noticed about the restaurant was the stunning dining room. Simply magnificent! I was also staying in the hotel at the time of this dinner and you can read the review of the Grand Hotel Wien in a separate article. The restaurant is very elegant. A Bright atmosphere with amazing accents throughout. I must say that this is one of my favorite styles!

The flavors of the food were not typical. This might shock some people, but in reality, it was absolutely superb. This was definitely a meal to remember. We started with a few different appetizers. These were not all on the menu but tasty and interesting nonetheless. My favorite of these would be a small portion of tuna which was super flavorful and presented beautifully.

There was also something to note from the beginning of the meal, this was the bread. Often times, bread is overlooked but not at Le Ciel. There was one that was flaky like a croissant and it was out of this world.

I will pause for a moment and step back and talk about the service. It’s important to note, that the dining room was completely full. Even with so many people, the staff did a wonderful job of always making sure that our glasses were full and that we were happy. Bravo.

It was asparagus season and every Austrian restaurant that I went to made this known. Therefore, it was only right that the next dish be an asparagus dish. It was very flavorful and combined a variety I was not accustomed to but really enjoyed!

The main course finally arrived. I went with a veal that came accompanied with asparagus and morel mushrooms and other odds and ends. Let’s first start by saying that the presentation was perfection. This dish just looks great. Although the presentation and the taste were quite nice, the meat was a little bit on the tougher side. That being said, I still really enjoyed it along with the combination of asparagus and mushrooms. It felt like I was eating the forest and I loved it.

The meal was going very well and I was happy with everything that came to the table. This was including the wine, we sampled many different types. After all of these courses, it was time for the dessert and I must say this is where it got extra exciting. For example, the first was beet based. It was quite exquisite and combined many interesting flavors. How many times of you had a dessert with beets in it? There were three others, all fantastic.

When the meal was over, I was incredibly happy and satisfied. So much creativity and all of if it worked out perfectly. It was like watching a masterpiece unfold in front of our eyes. I must say that this was definitely a meal for the record books, it was simply lovely and I would highly recommend you to visit Le Ciel when you are in Vienna!

Grand Hotel Wien Review (Vienna, Austria)

27 May 2016

As you all surely know by now, Pierre is a huge fan of Vienna, especially of the hotels. On my latest trip to this fine city, I visited the Grand Hotel Wien. During this visit, Vienna was also the location for my recent video and photo shoot. You will definitely have to stay tuned!

I must say that walking into the Grand Hotel Wien gives you a super luxurious feeling. It’s very elegant and classic with a beautiful bar to your right and the reception to your left. The hotel was relatively full during my stay but I was able to secure a room on the third floor.

Just as the styling of the lobby is classic and elegant, so are the rooms. This is really a personal preference, but I absolutely love patterns of the classic variety. These can be found throughout the room on the headboard, the furniture, the drapes and so on.

Moving into the bathroom we continue this beautiful styling. However, what I really liked in the bathroom were the gold fixtures. Everything is accented with beautiful gold. Lately, I’ve been working really hard to get super ripped so I spent a fair share of my time in the Grand Hotel’s gym. They have a wide range of workout equipment which was just perfect for getting my swell on. Brand-new treadmills with built-in TVs were definitely a huge plus. The gym and spa area also have a sauna and steam room. At this hotel, you really need to be careful about the time of use because they are not open all day and this was a minor setback.

In a very luxurious hotel such as this I always get extra excited for breakfast. Breakfast includes both à la carte and buffet items. They have all of your favorite hot dishes. What’s great about breakfast is their buffet has a very wide range of international dishes and I mean extra-wide. They pay extra close attention to their Japanese and Middle Eastern guests with items like hummus, miso soup and a variety of other dishes from wide-ranging regions.

When it was all said and done, the stay was quite nice. You’ll definitely have to read about the Le Ciel restaurant on the hotel’s top floor, which serves some fantastic food in my separate article. There were a few bumps along the road but solid overall. The food was quite nice as well as the service. I truly enjoyed their luxury style and the Grand Hotel Wien is definitely one to consider on your next trip to Vienna!

Best Dinner in Ljubljana

26 May 2016

Sometimes, you find a diamond in the rough when you weren’t even looking for one. This is what happened in Ljubljana, Slovenia. While visiting the Grand Hotel Union I was invited to one of their restaurants. It was their Smrekarjev Hram restaurant and that is where I fell in love! In my lifetime, there have only been a handful of meals that have been complete perfection! I must say that this meal in Ljubljana definitely made the list.

First, we can talk about the location. The restaurant is located about 100 meters from the center of the city. You can’t get much more convenient than that folks. Walking in the front door, you enter into a very warm and welcoming space. The staff were unbelievably good at what they do. The restaurant offered food that was not only tasty but also offered flavors I had not experienced before.

We started with a breaded and fried egg with Slovenian prosciutto. What a phenomenal beginning! This was accompanied with a Slovenian brut called Bjana.

I must say that all of the wines, which were locally sourced from several regions in Slovenia, were all out of this world. Each offered flavors that were refreshing and new!

It’s quite admirable that they were pushing the limits of the culinary arts, combining items that are not normally combined. For example, one of the dishes was a granola mixed with foie gras.

After a few more fantastic dishes, it was time dessert. The dessert that stuck in my mind was one that had rocks that were actually filled with chocolate. Tasty!

At the end of the meal, I was very impressed with everything that I consumed. If you’re looking for an all-around fantastic meal I would highly recommend you visit Smrekarjev Hram in Ljubljana, Slovenia! Go, seriously.

Grand Hotel Union Review (Ljubljana, Slovenia)

25 May 2016

As you know, I was recently in Zagreb, Croatia. After spending a couple weeks there, enjoying myself and catching up on work, I moved on to Ljubljana, Slovenia. It’s really not that far away and if you’re in the area, a must visit. I only stayed for three nights but was able to experience so much!

Grand Hotel Union Review (Ljubljana, Slovenia) Blog Europe Hotels Slovenia

The city is not large so it’s very easy to explore. While in Ljubljana, I stayed at the Grand Hotel Union. As you all probably guessed, it’s located right in the center of the city. I almost always stay right in the center of every city I visit, to make it super convenient to explore. The center of Ljubljana is absolutely gorgeous. There is a river with tons of bridges, beautiful shops and trees so plenty of green throughout. There’s also a castle perched up on a hill looking over the entire city which gives it a fairy tale feel. All of these features make Ljubljana a very quaint city!

Moving into the hotel, I got a very nice room on the executive end of the Grand Hotel Union. They have two wings in this particular hotel, one is a more modern updated look and the other is a more classic and elegant look. Both are quite beautiful but I really enjoyed my time on the executive side. Quite fitting of my lifestyle if you ask me. Wink.

Grand Hotel Union Review (Ljubljana, Slovenia) Blog Europe Hotels Slovenia

I entered my large room to find a bottle of merlot and a plate of fruit waiting for me. As per usual, a wonderful touch. The room had very high ceilings which gave a quite luxurious feel. The bathroom was very bright and clean. All I had to do was look out of my window and I could see the town square approximately 100 meters away.

One thing that was very consistent about the hotel was the excellent service throughout my stay. Not only a few, but all of the employees treated me with kindness and were very professional. Without them, I would not have been able to see so much of Slovenia. With their help, we were able to arrange a beautiful tour of Lake Bled and a food tour in the center of Ljubljana with Roundabout Tours. Both were incredible experiences and I would highly recommend them!

Pierre needs to eat, as do most living things. I was very happy to arrive at breakfast and see a plethora of options. I really loved the sausages at this breakfast!

The hotel stay went smoothly and they have some nice facilities, including an indoor pool. I was slightly disappointed with the fact that the gym only had one treadmill, but was informed by the staff that they have plans to expand the gym within the year. Pierre will be greatly looking forward to that time. They do however, have 3 saunas in their spa area. This was definitely a nice touch and I was able to sweat it out when the time was right.

While staying at the hotel, I also had a chance to visit one of the most phenomenal restaurants in Ljubljana. This restaurant is named Smrekarjev Hram and is actually part of the hotel! You will definitely have to read about it in a separate article. It was one of those meals that will stick with me until the day that I die.

Given these points, I’m sure you can see that I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Grand Hotel Union in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Ultimately, they offer a very strong package and really didn’t miss a beat on all fronts. If Slovenia has not made it to your bucket list, I strongly advise you to add it. When you visit, you definitely should stay at the Grand Hotel Union in Ljubljana!

Slon 1552 Restaurant Review (Ljubljana, Slovenia)

25 May 2016

While staying in Ljubljana, I took some time to visit a restaurant called Slon 1552. It’s at the Best Western hotel in the city center. Walking past the restaurant a few days prior, I was intrigued by the styling of the interior. Congratulations to whoever designed the restaurant! It’s magnificent and super easy to find because it’s just next to the town square.

The chef was obviously working very hard to create something different and unique. You can tell that presentation of the food came very high in their priorities because all of the dishes were quite beautiful.

Starting the meal off was a glass of Sinefinis Rosé Brut. Shortly after, it was onto the first course which was a single scallop. I really enjoyed the presentation of this dish but the scallop itself was not overly exciting.

Moving forward into the meal and a few more glasses of wine later, I would like to discuss the most unique dish of the menu. This was one which had shrimp, raspberries and bacon. I have never had this combination before. It may sound strange, but it actually tastes quite amazing and refreshing. Good to keep the mouth guessing.

For dessert, we went with a white chocolate and strawberry cake which really hit the spot. Accompanying the cake was a Slovenian dessert wine which paired effortlessly. How tasty!

The restaurant was a delight to visit. The staff was good throughout the evening and I love the design of the dining room. The food had it’s high points and then some midpoints. That being said, the meal was good overall. Yes, some of the dishes could use a little improvement but left Pierre satisfied, especially when considering the restaurant as a whole. At the end of the day, I did enjoy my evening at Slon 1552.

OMB Larder Restaurant Review (Belgrade, Serbia)

20 May 2016

While staying at the Radisson Blu Old Mill Belgrade hotel I was very curious to try their OMB Larder restaurant. As you know from reading the hotel review, the location is just outside the city center. Once you arrive, you can really appreciate the beautiful design of the hotel, including the restaurant. They have many items to choose from. However, to get the full experience, we went with the two tasting menu options. The first was a five course meal, the second was a 10 course meal. They brought some additions so I think we were looking at closer to a 12 course meal. A food marathon.

To start off, I gave the bartender free reign to make me something special. He went with a classic Manhattan cocktail. I have to say I’m already a fan of Manhattans so it did the trick. Cheers.

Moving into the food, we were given several starters. The one that really stood out, had to be the tuna tartare. It looked just beautiful and it had a great taste too. It was more than just looks folks! They serve it on a bed of ice which was crackling and popping as it arrived, giving it a unique presentation.

It was then on to some meat! Everywhere I went in Belgrade, they told me how big Serbians are into eating meat. The first serving of pork did have a nice flavor. The salad that accompanied it could have been improved but I liked the idea.

The next very memorable item was their burger. It was served open-faced with some traditional Serbian sauce on the side. I have to say that I loved it!

Putting all of the food aside and just focusing on dessert, I was absolutely blown away. At the end of the meal, a man came out of the kitchen and made us ice cream from scratch. He used liquid nitrogen and as he was making it, he said that it would be “the best ice cream you’ve ever had.” I listened, but to myself, I was thinking “no way in hell.”

A few moments later, they brought out a tray of chocolate and other items to add to your ice cream. I loaded it up with all types of extras. Oh my freaking God! He was not lying. This was the absolute best ice cream that I have ever had, hands down. It was so smooth and creamy and the flavor was super rich. Perfect. Honestly you could just go to the restaurant for dessert, it’s that good!

OMB Larder Restaurant Review (Belgrade, Serbia) Blog Europe Food Serbia

I really like what the OMB Larder restaurant in Belgrade, Serbia was going for. They told me all about how they source their ingredients locally, the design is absolutely beautiful and they really try to focus on quality over quantity. With that said, the food was good but there were a few dishes that could’ve used a little improvement. Hands-down they made up for any shortcomings with the best ice cream I’ve ever had. I know there’s room to improve but as is, I would still recommend you go there even if it’s just for the ice cream! Enjoy.

Fine Dining in Belgrade

17 May 2016

I had visited Eastern Europe last year, for my first time, but missed many countries. This time however, I got to explore places that I had never seen before. While in Eastern Europe, I visited Belgrade, Serbia. I got to experience many different foods and this was quite exciting! Pierre likes! One of the restaurants I tried was The Square. Walking into the restaurant, I was quite amazed by its beauty. It’s very stylish and modern. Much more luxurious than any other hotels I had visited while in Belgrade.

The waitstaff came and made their introductions and were very pleasant. They brought out the first starter which was compliments of the chef. There were a few interesting items in the dish. One was a pork tail popsicle. This wasn’t just any pork popsicle folks, this was something extraordinary. The flavor was just bursting out of it!

Up next, were a couple different types of foie gras. I must say that the grilled version was my favorite and quite tasty with the spinach. I believe every single course of this meal came with a different alcohol. The majority of it was wine, but we started with the traditional rakia which can be found throughout the Balkans. My first introduction to rakia was in Bulgaria and I have since enjoyed it several times. It’s not the easiest beverage to drink, but if you can handle it, I respect you.

At some point during this eating extravaganza we were served prawn tartare and a beef carpaccio. I specifically mentioned these dishes because they were quite phenomenal. Exquisite flavors and the carpaccio had the perfect amount of salt. Heaven.

It was then onto the main courses. We were served an octopus dish as well as a pork foot. Even though I love pork I have to say that the octopus took the cake so to speak.

Radisson Collection Old Mill: First Design Hotel in Belgrade

16 May 2016

When you think of Serbia, what comes to mind? You probably don’t think of luxury hotels and great food. For some reason, I’m drawn to places that I don’t know much about. I have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised when I visited Belgrade this spring!

Click HERE to check out the Radisson Collection!

It all started with an hour-long flight from Bucharest, Romania. I arrived in Belgrade, went through customs and found my driver waiting for me with a Mr. Blake sign.

We hopped into their very slick shuttle that is equipped with Wi-Fi and set off to the Radisson Collection Hotel. A fairly short drive later and we arrived!

Radisson Collection Old Mill: First Design Hotel in Belgrade Blog Europe Hotels Serbia

Walking into the hotel was simply stunning! This is definitely the most creative and beautiful Radisson that I’ve ever visited. It’s won all types of design awards and you’ll be able to see why, once you look at the photos. The building was originally an old mill and it was then converted into a hotel.

I was given a tour of the premises and explained about all of the features of the design. It’s really nice to have a tour to understand why something was done and to appreciate all of the small details in this hotel. Whether it’s the waves in the lobby to represent the rivers in Serbia or it’s the beautiful sculpture in the front that represents a perfect collision, it all looks great.

I love new hotels! This hotel is only about a year old and it shows. Walking into my beautiful room on the third floor, I was simply delighted. Fresh wooden floors throughout and a very cohesive design. I absolutely love the bedding. Very soft and comfortable with a lot of pillows.

The bathroom is connected to the room but with a few sliding doors that can give a privacy if it’s needed. All of the lighting, the exposed brick and the smooth feel give this room a really nice vibe.

This was the first Radisson that I’ve ever visited that also had an executive lounge. I am obsessed with these damn lounges. One of the great things about the lounge in Belgrade, was that you could access all types of beverages and food throughout the day! Amazing! No limits.

One of my favorite parts of brand-new hotels would be the gyms. The Radisson Collection Belgrade really did a great job with their gym and relaxation area. They have a perfectly designed sauna and steam room, which you know Pierre loves. Sometimes the steam rooms in other hotels aren’t quite hot enough but this one was nice and hot how I like it!

I love the dining room of this hotel too. It’s known as their OMB Larder restaurant which I also ate dinner at. You’ll be able to read about that in a separate article. Wink. The breakfast was solid. What I really liked was the local Serbian food. Pierre is a huge fan of meat, so he was delighted when he saw Serbian sausages for breakfast. They have both a buffet and a la carte options to choose from.

I stayed at the Radisson Collection in Belgrade for three great nights. It is a magical hotel. Overall, the hotel was quite nice but my only qualm with it, was the location. It’s a shame that such a beautiful hotel isn’t centrally located. For me it definitely was possible to walk to the city center but a bit farther than most would prefer. Everything else about this hotel was right on the money. The design is truly impressive, the service was great and I really enjoyed features like the executive lounge and steam room. If you’re looking for a beautifully designed hotel while in Belgrade, then I would check out the Radisson Collection.

15 May 2016

Looking to live the boss life? While staying at the beautiful Intercontinental hotel in Bucharest, Romania, I decided to try their Sunday brunch.

It was a rainy day, but I didn’t mind because I was staying in, drinking champagne and eating food all day long! The dining room is beautiful. It has lots of windows which let in a great amount of light. It was the Easter holiday and you could easily tell because there were so many people. It’s a very large dining room and is partitioned off with glass dividers which give a sense of privacy but you can still people watch easily. Don’t worry you creepers.

The first thing that caught my eye was the plethora of desserts. There was a pyramid of macarons! Of course they had a giant chocolate fountain as well. Intercontinental does a really great job at food presentation as you can tell by this spread. Look at these photos!

The next thing I noticed, were all of the small tasting dishes. There were loads of different types including seafood, egg, salad and the list goes on. I loaded up a few plates and retreated to the consumption area a.k.a. the table.

Once I plowed through all of the delicious food in the first round, I made my way back to the buffet line to find the fresh seafood. A nice woman offered to cook me some lobster with cheese, it was a pure delight.

Throughout the entire brunch, there was free-flowing champagne. I was drinking the stuff like I was in the desert for weeks and hadn’t had any nourishment. I was just throwing glasses of champagne back like nothing. This is the perfect recipe for Pierre’s heaven. Perfect life.

The food was great, but it was time to get to those beautiful desserts. A majority of them tasted as good as they looked. My favorite was the tiramisu. I accompanied this with an espresso which really hit the spot!

After the incredible brunch, I made my way up to the 22nd floor to spend some time running it all off. I ran 10 kilometers in an hour and basically erased the meal, which was perfect. Boss life.

Italian Food in Bucharest

15 May 2016

The last night in Bucharest, Romania was a tough one. Much like everywhere I go, the last night always seems to be the best. I was still at the Intercontinental Bucharest and I decided to try their Italian restaurant. The hotel is fantastic and you must read about it in this article. I was told that the chef at the Modigliani restaurant has been around food preparation his entire life because his parents own a restaurant in Italy. This got me extra excited!

For this meal, I got to experience my first Romanian wine. We went with a 2012 Hyperciun Feteasca Neagra DOC Dealu Mare. As with trying most foreign wines for the first time, I was able to notice flavors I have never tasted before. As the wine decanted, the flavor greatly improved.

After taking a few sips of wine, I had a look around the dining room. It was stunning. I loved the light fixture in the middle of the room along with the paintings. About halfway through our meal, a pianist joined and started playing some wonderful music.

For starters, we went with fried calamari and an amazing salad which was basically a plate of meat and cheese. Let’s just say that this was all I needed. Both were absolutely fantastic. The calamari was especially good with both of the dipping sauces.

We then moved on to our entrées, which were a steak that had a hat made of foi gras and black truffle as well as a seafood risotto. The risotto definitely took the gold. The seafood in the risotto was cooked to perfection in and very juicy. I liked eating the steak when I got a little piece of everything. The asparagus was amazing. Overall, the steak had good flavor but could have been a little bit juicier.

They have a really good way of presenting their desserts. Instead of picking items off of the menu, they bring out a tray of desserts. This way you get to see before you buy. We went with the tiramisu and the panna cotta. I really loved the flavor and texture of the panna cotta!

This was a great way to end my time in Bucharest, Romania. The meal was overall, quite good. The service was also wonderful. We were taken care of by a few different people and all were very kind. Most of the food was delicious. Rating the restaurant as a whole, I would say that it was a solid choice for Italian food in Bucharest, Romania!
