InterContinental Hotel Review: Bangkok’s Best Club Lounge

30 Aug 2017

The InterContinental hotel in Bangkok is located just in front of the Chit Lom BTS station. The property is surrounded by high-end shopping malls. From the moment I walked in, I immediately noticed the extravagant lobby. Once my room was ready it was up to the 25th floor to check out my room.

The room layout was practically the same as the InterContinental on Park Lane in London. InterContinental rooms are consistently high quality, something I’ve come to truly appreciate. With more of a business feel, the room fit my personal style. The bathroom featured both the bathtub and a large gorgeous marble shower. The room had a kettle but no coffee machine.

The part of this property that got me the most excited would have to be their InterContinental Club Lounge on the 37th floor. While most hotels in Bangkok have lovely lounges, this was a step above. The lounge overlooks the Royal Bangkok Sports Club which has a horse track and golf course. During afternoon tea I was able to watch a horse race! The lounge not only had this fantastic view but a lovely breakfast, afternoon tea and evening cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. It was all great!

The à la carte breakfast in the lounge was incredible. I went with the steak cooked medium rare both days and I simply fell in love. I don’t think I’ve ever had that good of a steak at breakfast. Incredible.

The afternoon tea was also something above and beyond. They offer a full-service afternoon tea which is included with your lounge access. Obviously I was impressed at the amazing value.

Just up a few stairs from the InterContinental Club Lounge is the rooftop pool. Having a pool up so high was amazing. You can practically see all of the city center from there.

The gym is down one floor from the lounge and offers the same panoramic views of the city below. There is tons of equipment which keeps the gym never feeling busy. After my morning run, I checked out the changing room to find a hot tub, steam room and sauna.

This hotel definitely has a fantastic location. It’s within walking distance of Lumphini Park which is one of my favorite parks in the city. The views from this property are simply stunning. I’ve always been a fan of the InterContinental style and the extravagance of the Bangkok property really impressed me. My stay was amazing and therefore I would easily be able to recommend the InterContinental hotel in Bangkok! Go go go!

Chatrium Riverside Hotel Review (Bangkok, Thailand)

29 Aug 2017

My stay in Bangkok was finally winding down and one of the last properties that I visited was the Chatrium Riverside hotel. The property is located quite near the Saphan Taksin BTS station. From the station, you can easily go downstairs to the pier to catch the free hotel shuttle boat. Just a few minutes on the boat and you will arrive at this Chatrium.

Upon a quick and friendly check in process, I headed up to the 33rd floor to have a look at my massive suite. If you’re familiar, the building is actually circular and my suite had both a south and west facing view. The living room was very comfortable. Connected to the living room was the biggest hotel balcony I think I’ve ever had. In case you wanted to cook there is also a full-sized kitchen! The bathroom was located between the living room and bedroom. One last feature I wanted to point out is that my room offered 2 pieces of laundry per day which made my incredibly happy. It’s the little things folks.

The bedroom was my favorite part of the suite. Very comfortable bedding with beautiful pillows. A nice light along the top edge of the bed created a lovely ambiance in the evening. From the bedroom’s desk, I enjoyed watching the boats go by as I got to my work.

I was sure to head up to the executive club lounge on the 36th floor. At the lounge you’ll be able to enjoy afternoon tea time as well as evening cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. They also have non-alcoholic drinks throughout the day but the lounge does not offer breakfast.

The breakfast buffet on the ground floor was enormous. They really filled up all of the space available with a very wide selection of items. No matter what part of the world you’re from, you’ll find something you will enjoy. Even though it was quite busy everyday, the service was impressively good.

Revisiting the River Barge restaurant for dinner time was even more impressive than breakfast. The buffet selection only got wider and the quality of food was quite good. I was extremely excited for the fish tacos! They even had live music to enjoy while you ate. Overall, I definitely enjoyed this restaurant.

To work off all of those calories you’re going to want to hit the gym. Luckily they have a fantastic gym which was practically empty my whole stay. Lots of great equipment and just a very pleasant overall atmosphere. In the changing room you’ll find a nice sauna as well.

Silver Waves Restaurant Review: Bangkok’s Amazing Chinese Food

28 Aug 2017

Every once in a while I get completely surprised by a meal. The most magical meal I’ve had recently was at the Silver Waves restaurant at the top of the Chatrium Riverside hotel. I stayed at the properties so you can read about the hotel in a separate article. The restaurant is located on 36th floor, the same floor as the hotel’s club lounge. Riva Arun Review Bangkok: Luxury Boutique Hotel with a View

24 Aug 2017

As you very well know, Pierre enjoys his big-name hotels just as much as he enjoys his boutique hotels. On my most recent trip to Bangkok, Thailand I fancied staying along the river and one of the properties I chose to experience was the Riva Arun hotel located across from Wat Arun. Here you’ll be within walking distance to basically all of the major tourist attractions in Bangkok. This property really does give you a very special experience. I’ve also stayed at the brand’s sister property called Riva Surya.

A major selling point of this property would have to be there rooftop restaurant and bar called Above Riva. You can read about this restaurant in a separate article. It’s really a great place to have a meal and enjoy this splendid view. At Above Riva you can also have the hotel breakfast. The food is mostly à la carte but there are few buffet items as well. I liked how everything was cooked nice and crispy for my Western-style breakfast.

My stay at the Riva Arun hotel was short but sweet! Unfortunately this property does not have a fitness center or spa but does feature in-room spa treatments. Above Riva Restaurant Review: Best View of Wat Arun

23 Aug 2017

Wat Arun is one of the most notorious temples in all of Thailand. Just this year, they finished a temple renovation and it is now looking more beautiful than ever. After living in Bangkok for year’s and visiting several times, I’ve discovered the best place to enjoy the temple’s glory was during my meal at the Above Riva restaurant. The restaurant is located on the rooftop of the Riva Arun hotel which you can read about in a separate article. This property offers splendid views of this beautiful temple at all times.

Shangri-La Hotel Review (Bangkok, Thailand)

23 Aug 2017

At this point, I’ve visited almost all of the top hotels in Bangkok. There were a few left on my list that I was working my way through, and now it was time for the Shangri-La Bangkok.

Shangri-La Hotel Review (Bangkok, Thailand) Asia Bangkok Blog Hotels Thailand

The Shangri-La hotel in Bangkok is located very near the Saphan Taksin BTS station and pier. This where you can catch riverboats to go all over Bangkok. The property has been here for some time and they have chosen to keep it very traditional. There are two wings of the property, one is the larger main Shangri-La wing and the other is a quieter more peaceful Krungthep wing.

After checking in, I headed up to the 19th floor to see what my deluxe room had to offer. This was indeed very old school Thai style luxury. A giant Thai mural painted headboard was the primary focus of the design. Near the window was a sofa and then in the bathroom there was a shower stall and bath tub. The only thing missing was a coffee machine.

After getting a good night’s sleep, I headed down to the gym on the third floor which looks out over the river, the pool and their Salathip restaurant. The gym is quite massive, ensuring you will have no problem finding available equipment to use. In the changing room, you will find a large hot tub, a steam room and a sauna. Very high quality facilities all around. A great place to start the day!

After my workout, I cleaned myself up and went to breakfast. They have breakfast on the ground floor and in the Horizon club lounge on the 24th floor. I enjoyed my breakfast with an amazing view of the Chao Phraya River. The Horizon club lounge offers a wide assortment of breakfast items from all over the globe. You can order a few options à la carte and then choose from their buffet as well. This lounge was really quite impressive in both its design, river view and offering. In additional to breakfast, you can expect the usual afternoon tea and evening food and drinks as well.

The property also features several food and beverage outlets. One that I was able to sample was Salathip restaurant which I mentioned earlier. The restaurant is located right on the river which provides a great ambiance. During dinner they offer a traditional Thai dance show which can be interesting if you haven’t seen it before.

Shangri-La Hotel Review (Bangkok, Thailand) Asia Bangkok Blog Hotels Thailand

The hotels located along the river generally feel more like resorts, especially the Shangri-La. This feeling is achieved with the fact that the hotel is so massive and features a very large outdoor pool. Everyday I would look down to see it packed with people (except when I captured the photo right after the rain.)

At the end of the day, I did end up enjoying my stay at the Shangri-La in Bangkok, Thailand. My stay started rocky but got better over time. Lucky for you, a normal hotel guest will not have to deal with the same unpleasant marketing staff I did. Therefore, if you’re looking for a large, classic and luxurious hotel along the river, then I’m quite certain you will enjoy your time at the Shangri-La hotel in Bangkok!

Penthouse Bar and Grill Review (Bangkok, Thailand)

23 Aug 2017

On the top of the Park Hyatt in Bangkok, there is the Penthouse bar and grill. When steak and alcohol are involved, I am usual quite excited!

Penthouse Bar and Grill Review (Bangkok, Thailand) Asia Bangkok Blog Food Thailand

My evening started at their gorgeously designed bar and moved to the dining room. I started with an old-fashioned to get the ball rolling. It contained the perfect amounts of all ingredients and left me excited to continue the evening.

For dinner, we went with a shrimp cocktail, onion soup, bone marrow, macaroni and cheese and of course a steak. Lots of people have different preference when it comes to steak but I personally believe that Japanese meat is the best. This is why I decided to go with the 180g Matsunaga A3 Wagyu striploin. This was definitely a fantastic choice and came accompanied with French fries and béarnaise sauce. I paired the steak with a 2015 The Hedonist Shiraz. By far, my favorite part of the meal was the steak!

Finishing off the evening was an Irish coffee dessert. A great way to finish the meal but little did I know the evening was not over!

We then moved to a somewhat secret whiskey room on the same floor. The whiskey room is very low-key and provides a very intimate space to enjoy a nice night cap before slipping off to dreamland. I really enjoyed my glass of 12 Year Glengoyne single malt scotch whiskey.

I must say that Pierre is most happy with a nice steak and a glass of red wine. I was not disappointed in the slightest with my evening. Actually quite the contrary, I enjoyed myself immensely. Considering all parts of the restaurant and bar, I would recommend you to visit the Penthouse Bar and Grill at the top of the Park Hyatt in Bangkok, Thailand.

Bangkok’s Newest High-End Luxury Hotel: Park Hyatt Review

21 Aug 2017

The Park Hyatt in Bangkok has been one of the most highly anticipated hotels in Asia. On my recent trip to Thailand, I was incredibly excited that I was going to stay for two nights at the Park Hyatt. The property is on top of the Central Embassy luxury shopping mall. For those of you that know Bangkok, you know that this is an incredibly convenient location. The hotel is even connected by footbridge to the Phloen Chit BTS station. Perfect!

The hotel lobby is located on the 10th floor of the building. The feeling reminded me of the Andaz hotel in Tokyo. A very modern look, full of high-quality. Once my check-in process was complete, a friendly receptionist took me up to the 14th floor to explore my room.

Just like the lobby, the room was incredibly gorgeous with contemporary artwork. Above the bedside tables were Thai style art which helped remind me where I was. There is a large walk-in closet, electronic curtains and one of the most gorgeous and comfortable beds I’ve slept in recently. There is also a lovely station for making tea and coffee.

The property features 4 food and beverage outlets. They even have a sort of hidden whiskey bar with an intimate and private setting which I am now a huge fan of. You can read all about their Penthouse Bar and Grill in a separate article.

At the Living Room and Embassy Room you can enjoy a breakfast buffet as well as an à la carte menu. All of the items I tried were very tasty. I love that they had three types of mustard, well done.

Marriott Sukhumvit Hotel Review (Bangkok, Thailand)

16 Aug 2017

On my most recent stay in Bangkok, Thailand I stayed at the Marriott on Sukhumvit road near Thong Lo BTS station. This is actually my old neighborhood, I spent about 2 1/2 years living just around the corner from this property.

After check-in I went up to the 27th floor to check out my room. The room was not massive but had a quality interior with a sofa and a nice desk. Separating the bedroom and the bathroom is a large sliding door. Inside the bathroom you will find a fairly sizable bathtub located right next to the shower.

The view from my room was a nice and aimed me towards the center of the city.

A very notable feature of this property would have to be the rooftop bar. It’s called Octave and offers a glorious view of the city. I used to frequent this bar and now I’m back as a hotel guest.

The hotel also features a rooftop pool and fitness area on the seventh floor. The gym is on the medium to small side and offers several cardio machines as well as free weights and weight machines.

My favorite part about the stay at the Marriott on Sukhumvit was the breakfast! The breakfast takes place on the ground floor and is quite extensive. Most notable for me was the Indian food. They had a few Indian dishes that I absolutely loved. Tasty!

Pimalai Resort Review: Krabi’s Best Getaway

16 Aug 2017

My journey to Krabi, Thailand began with a flight from Bangkok. The flight only takes about an hour and 15 minutes. Once at the Krabi airport, I was picked up by the friendly Pimalai resort staff in their private car. After an hour drive we switched to a boat which takes about 30 minutes before again switching back to car to arrive at the resort.

As soon as you step into the lobby and start to see the property, I’m sure you’ll be blown away much like I was. The resort is made up of villas along the hillside as well as closer to the beach, all looking over the ocean. The main lobby is located in the middle of the property and is also where you can find a large pool. After checking in and drinking a welcome drink, I was instructed to hop in the buggy and then we climbed the hill. A few minutes drive up the steep hill and we arrived at villa 808, which would be my home for the next four nights.

When I opened the front gate to the villa, I immediately noticed the infinity pool. There were two parts of the villa, on the left you have the living room and on the right the bedroom. I first walked into the bedroom to see a gorgeous bed with a canopy above. My view from the bed looked out over the water which was simply splendid!

About the same size of the bedroom would be the large bathroom and closet. There was a bathtub also with the same gorgeous view, a shower stall and a large walk-in closet. It had all the amenities I needed.

After checking out the room, I stepped back outside and walked over to the living room. The layout is similar but inside you’ll find a full-sized kitchen, a living room to relax, an additional bathroom with shower and another TV. The whole villa has lots of indoor and outdoor seating with a daybed in the middle, between the sections. This was a great place to enjoy a meal of room service!

The villa ultimately blew me away and I enjoyed every moment spent there. The pool was quite refreshing and the comfortable lounge chairs were great place to sunbathe. Be sure to not underestimate the very strong sun like I did!

The property features several food and beverage outlets for your convenience. First let’s talk about the extensive room service menu! All of the food I ate was quite good but I would highly recommend you to focus on the Thai and Western dishes. The speedy delivery time made me very happy.

The good food didn’t stop at the room service! The first building I mentioned that contains the lobby also offers breakfast at their Seven Seas restaurant which offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. The breakfast buffet consists of a variety of dishes, including both Western and Asian dishes. Everyone will be able to find something they like and all that I ate was lovely. Don’t forget to enjoy the amazing fresh fruit. I still don’t know how Thailand produces such amazingly sweet fruit.

The hotel features other facilities such as gym, tennis courts, beach access, spa, and more. The gym during my visit was temporary because it’s being renovated, but still offered a large amount of equipment, including what I needed which was cardio machines and free weights. During my workout I also noticed a boxing ring which would be good for those interested in Muay Thai.

Just before leaving, I headed to the spa for a foot massage. I would definitely recommend you to enjoy a treatment at their lovely spa in the jungle.

This island getaway at Pimalai resort was extraordinary. It was rainy season when I visited, but I was lucky enough to get lots of sunshine to enjoy. The staff at the property treated me with kindness and respect and I greatly appreciated it. The property was managed wonderfully and had lots to offer to get the relaxation time we all need. Although it takes some time to get to the property, it seemed to fly by and wasn’t much of a hassle at all. Therefore, for the next getaway, when you’re seeking a little relaxation time in nature, I would highly recommend you to visit the Pimalai resort in Krabi, Thailand.
