The Most Beautiful Food in Bucharest?

27 Apr 2016

After spending a short time in Bucharest, Romania, I realized that there are many different areas which offer a variety of different atmospheres. One of the days during my Bucharest exploration, I decided to visit the Joseph restaurant. The restaurant is located on the north end of the city which is the more luxurious area of Bucharest!

It was a beautiful summer day with great weather, so we sat outside. Outdoor seating on the patio is quite magical, really. It was the weekend so there were many people there. I really couldn’t have asked for a better atmosphere than the quaint patio!

To start, I went with a caipirinha which is a cocktail originating in Brazil. I thought it would be nice to have a refreshing drink on a beautiful summer day. Shortly after the welcome drink, we ordered our appetizers. We went with the tuna tartare with avocado and a spinach ravioli with duck prosciutto. Let’s stop for a moment and take a look at how beautiful the presentation is. They clearly look like works of art and the taste was phenomenal. The ravioli melted in my mouth and the prosciutto help give it this amazing richness.

They set the bar quite high with the appetizers and drinks. To keep the ball rolling, I ordered a mojito which was very tasty and then put in the order for the entrees. For the these we went with a lobster risotto as well as a rack of lamb. Recently in Bulgaria, I had the best lamb of my life so my bar was also set quite high. The lobster risotto ended up being one of the best I’ve had. There is nothing better than getting a perfectly creamy risotto. The lobster was a little overcooked but still tasty nevertheless.

For dessert we got a little wild. There was a chocolate forest on the menu which was very intriguing and I had to order it. There was also a chocolate mint ball dessert that I was curious about. First and foremost, the presentation was perfect. Both were little masterpieces. This was a situation though where they tasted good but not out of this world. I still can’t get over how pretty they were though.

At the end of the day, the meal at Joseph Restaurant was great. Throughout the meal we had very friendly service. I seriously commend the kitchen for producing such beautiful dishes. Honestly, it’s worth a visit just to enjoy eating pieces of art. On a majority of the dishes the taste was very good as well. I would highly recommend you to visit Joseph Restaurant in Bucharest, Romania the next time you have a chance!

JW Marriott Hotel Review (Bucharest, Romania)

27 Apr 2016

After our time in Sofia, Bulgaria it was onto Bucharest, Romania! When I look at the map it didn’t look like a very far journey so I didn’t bother to book a flight. However, when push came to shove, it ended up taking about six hours with a combination bus and a taxi. It sounds a little extreme but surprisingly it was fairly smooth and straightforward.

We arrived at the JW Marriott Bucharest around 5:30pm. We had a dinner the same evening at the JW Steakhouse which you will be able to read in a separate article. The hotel is right in the city center and near some very popular buildings for tourists.

The lobby of the hotel is quite glamorous. This hotel is an iconic hotel in Bucharest and has many things going on inside. There are many shops, including many luxury brands for all you big spenders.

I was just recently in the Grosvenor House JW Marriott in London. You definitely must read about that experience here. The styling in Bucharest was clearly recently updated much like London. I like that JW Marriott has high standards for the styling of its properties. It’s very elegant and also has a very clean look. In the bathroom, it is also very nice and they use Bvlgari products.

Of course, I received upgraded executive lounge access. Boss life. The lounge is absolutely stunning! They have some fantastic snacks offered throughout the day, along with the typical coffee and other soft drinks. In the evening they have happy hour which is heaven. The food in the lounge is definitely quite an extensive offering.

We had breakfast in the lounge the next day which was perfect. I was able to get some beautiful photos because the food looked so good! It also tasted great! I had many different teas to choose from and lots of food options as well. Heaven.

Looking through their website, I was very excited to check out their gym and pool area. It turns out that the gym is actually a public gym. This means that both the gym and pool area were absolutely full of people. Public gyms tend to be a bit busy and hotel gyms are usually nice and relaxed. I prefer the latter.

The hotel is huge. There are many different facets of the property I feel like I’ve gotten a good feel for the hotel. It’s all very fresh and feels very new. The rooms are updated and clean. The food was great in the lounge and at breakfast. Not my favorite gym scenario but it gets the job done. At the end of the day, my time at the JW Marriott Bucharest was a great experience!

Bistro GUXT Review (Bucharest, Romania)

27 Apr 2016

Before coming to Bucharest, Pierre did some research to find some great restaurants to try. Bistro Guxt kept coming up in the top rankings during my research, so I decided to arrange a dinner there.

Bistro GUXT Review (Bucharest, Romania) Blog Europe Food Romania

This is my first time to Romania and I was really curious about the cuisine. Bistro Guxt is an establishment that focuses mostly on the food paired with beer or wine. For example, each item on the menu has recommendations for beer and wine to pair. The matches were great!

To start, we went with an octopus salad, a caramelized onion and cheese tart and a chicken and duck liver mousse with truffle. All were quite great! One item was actually quite a surprise for me. Normally, I’m not the biggest fan of liver but for some reason I absolutely loved this!

I almost forgot that to start I ordered a Ground Zero “Imperial Fuck” beer. It was amazing! It’s  full of flavor. All of the beers that I had that evening were quite fantastic and honestly made me feel like I was back in America, where we have so many craft breweries. For the entrée, we went with a beautiful steak accompanied with grilled vegetables. Make sure you specify how you would like your meat cooked when ordering, just to make sure you get it how you love it. The seasoned butter was amazing!

During our meal, we were actually waited on by the owner of the restaurant. Radu is the man and you can tell he really loves what he’s doing!

Not long after, it was time to wind down and have dessert. For this, we went with a Tarta Tatin and a chocolate and amaretti di saronno cake. I must say that the chocolate cake takes the cake so to speak. Wink. All in all if you want some good quality food Bistro Guxt is definitely worth checking out while in Bucharest, Romania. The service was fantastic and the food was very tasty!

Perfect Bulgarian Food in Sofia

24 Apr 2016

Dear Lord! Have you ever had a meal that knocks your socks right off? Have you ever been introduced to a new cuisine and every bite tasted perfect? This doesn’t happen often but it happened in Sofia, Bulgaria at the Hadjidraganov’s Houses restaurant. The restaurant is located on the north side of the city. It is styled like a traditional Bulgarian home. It looks like someone moved the house right out of the countryside and plopped it right down in the middle of the city.

We started our meal with a traditional Bulgarian shopska salad. It was basically a small amount of vegetables layered in a large amount of cheese. Daddy likes. The cheese was amazing and it reminded me of feta because it was salty. It was a ginormous portion which we were told was normal for Bulgaria. I tried to pace myself but it tasted so good I couldn’t stop eating!

Perfect Bulgarian Food in Sofia Blog Bulgaria Europe Food

I guess the alcohol was getting to my head because I forgot to mention we started with some Bulgarian cognac which is called Rakia. It was very strong and not for the faint of heart. Right after the Rakia we jumped into some Bulgarian wine which possessed a flavor I have never tasted before.

Perfect Bulgarian Food in Sofia Blog Bulgaria Europe Food

What better way to try a new cuisine then order a bunch of traditional meat? For this we went with a wide assortment. We basically killed an entire ecosystem and put it on our table. We were highly recommended the lamb because it was super fresh. Butchered 10 minutes earlier. I’m joking. We also got a sword of various meats. The sword was on a wooden platter of more salad and fries. Fries!

Every bit of meat simply melted in our mouths. All of it was seasoned perfectly and I must admit that I fell in love. As you can see from the photos, it was a ton of food.

We gorged ourselves on this perfect food. When it was time to have more we quickly went for the opportunity. No it wasn’t another entrée, it was time for dessert. For this we went with a very sweet orange cake and an order of goat yogurt with berries. Pro tip: eat a bite of both desserts to have the experience of a lifetime!

As I said, this is not a common occurrence. Normally, when I’m introduced to a new cuisine there are things I don’t like. However, with this meal, I loved every single item that we ordered. Bacaromi Restaurant Review (Venice, Italy)

22 Apr 2016

When it came to the last night in Venice, I knew exactly what I wanted. I wanted great Italian food without anything too over-the-top. This is exactly what I got at the Bacaromi restaurant at the Hilton in Venice!

Dreams really do come true folks! First, we started off with some Prosecco, to warm up. Shortly after, we were brought over a tray of deliciousness, which was so huge it easily could have been a meal for two. It had everything you could possibly want from octopus to meatballs to salmon to salami to peppers to oh my God! If you want to get Pierre excited, feed him this!

For the second starter, we went with tortellini which had meat and mushroom sauce. It was perfection. This is exactly what I had in mind for my last meal in Venice. We also accompanied this amazing food with a bottle of red wine which was a Fumanelli Valpolicella Classico Superiore. They matched wonderfully.

For the mains, we went with pork cheek and pasta with duck sauce. Both were great and very heart warming dishes, however nothing too wild. The tortellini was actually my favorite dish of the entire meal.

Ca Maria Adele Hotel Review (Venice, Italy)

21 Apr 2016

Only two nights were spent in Venice, Italy but the whole trip was absolutely magical! Walking around Venice, I felt that I was on a movie set. The whole scene is so picturesque, it’s unbelievable. The Ca Maria Adele hotel also encompasses this beauty. It’s located in the middle of Venice, not far from San Marco. It’s actually right across from the Basilica di Santa Maria della salute. If you’re familiar with Venice, this is a very easy area to get to and truly one of the best points to start your explorations of Venice!

The view from the room was very impressive. There was an outdoor seating area which puts you right in the middle of the action of Venice but in my case it was a very relaxed part of the city. They have a few locations where you can enjoy your breakfast. The night before they dropped off a breakfast menu where you can select your order and then they will deliver it to the location of your choosing. Pierre is a boss, so he obviously went for the room service option.

Dopolavoro Restaurant Review (Venice, Italy)

21 Apr 2016

I was actually more excited about this dinner then I was about visiting Venice itself. I know I am a bit insane but that’s the life of Pierre. Dopolavoro opened last year and received a Michelin star six months later in December 2015.

Dopolavoro Restaurant Review (Venice, Italy) Blog Europe Food Italy

First let’s talk about the journey that it takes to get to the JW Marriott in Venice. The hotel sits on an island of its own. The only way to get there is to take the shuttle boat. This alone will take you 20 minutes so plan ahead. We were recommended to take the boat about 30 minutes before the reservation to get there on time. It ended up working out just perfectly. Once you arrive on the island, you need to walk over to the restaurant, which is another five minute walk away from the dock. It was in the evening and there was a beautiful sunset!

Dopolavoro Restaurant Review (Venice, Italy) Blog Europe Food Italy

Dopolavoro Restaurant Review (Venice, Italy) Blog Europe Food Italy

We got to the restaurant and inside the design was beautiful. The dining room was off to the right after you enter and it is very elegant. No white tablecloths but definitely fine dining. We were seated in the middle of the room which actually had some great lighting.

We were brought out the menu and introduced to our options. On the left-hand side of the menu was a five course menu. Below the 5 course was a 4 course vegetarian menu and then on the other side a 10 course option. I was interested in both the five and the 10 courses. We finally went with both of them! Personally, I ordered the 10 course option because I wanted to really experience what the restaurant had to offer. There were however some additions to the 10 course menu that were offered compliments of the chef. In total I think I had about a 15 to 20 course meal. Yowza!

Dopolavoro Restaurant Review (Venice, Italy) Blog Europe Food Italy

Some of the memorable moments of the meal occurred early. The first one that I can remember was the non-alcoholic drink balls serve in the beginning. Basically it’s a fruit cocktail inside of a ball that explodes in your mouth. Something very unique and a refreshing way to start the meal.

Dopolavoro Restaurant Review (Venice, Italy) Blog Europe Food Italy

My welcome drink was a traditional Italian Negroni. I’ve heard about these before and was very excited to try one. Caution: I would suggest that you drink these slowly at first because they’re quite potent. Just one of these for my welcome drink and I was feeling it. Alone it wouldn’t be bad but when you consider that there were about six more glasses of wine to follow it became a big deal.

Dopolavoro Restaurant Review (Venice, Italy) Blog Europe Food Italy

Actually, the first official course on the menu was a spaghetti salad with spider crab and coffee. This isn’t something you hear every day, definitely something unique and I appreciate the fact that they’re pushing the limits of the culinary arts.

Dopolavoro Restaurant Review (Venice, Italy) Blog Europe Food Italy

As you know Pierre is a huge sucker for risotto so when the smoked herring risotto, bailey floral and roasted corn came I was very happy.

Dopolavoro Restaurant Review (Venice, Italy) Blog Europe Food Italy

Another fantastically magical dish was the grilled octopus, rolled with lard and horseradish mayonnaise. There is never a time when pork fat doesn’t make something taste great. In my experience this is always the case.

Dopolavoro Restaurant Review (Venice, Italy) Blog Europe Food Italy

Dopolavoro Restaurant Review (Venice, Italy) Blog Europe Food Italy

There were many more dishes but those were all of my favorites. I could’ve stopped eating many times because I was full, but I pressed on just for you. It was time for dessert. My favorite of the bunch actually came from the five course set menu which was the goat cheese, raspberry and rose sorbet. This was absolutely phenomenal. It basically taste like cheesecake and was so smooth! With the raspberry and rose flavors it was like eating heaven. They brought many others and another memorable masterpiece was the strawberry and rhubarb tart “inversa.”

Dopolavoro Restaurant Review (Venice, Italy) Blog Europe Food Italy

With so many dishes I commend the kitchen for putting in so much effort into such an extensive meal. The flavors, overall, were very intriguing and unique. I think it would be nearly impossible for me to love everything but I truly enjoyed the vast majority of! I truly respect this clear passion for the culinary arts by the Dopolavoro staff. There is a lot of hype behind this restaurant and when all things are considered, I think it’s worth it. It does come with a hefty price tag but it’s not something you’ll be eating everyday because you will become a whale. I do think you should give this place a shot and see what all the commotion is about! Bon appétit.

Mio Bar Review (Milan, Italy)

20 Apr 2016

Milan was short but sweet! What a beautiful city! During my stay at the Park Hyatt Milan I gave their Mio bar a shot. The hotel design is really nice and equally nice is the dining room and bar.

Mio Bar Review (Milan, Italy) Bars Blog Europe Food Italy

Going in for dinner at Mio bar I really had no idea what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised by the dining room. Unlike the name suggest, the bar actually is a complete restaurant. There are both indoor and outdoor seating areas. We opted for the indoor seating because it was a little chilly out.

For the main, I was really torn because I haven’t had a burger in a while and they had one that sounded incredible. However, I was in Milan, and I don’t know when I’ll be back next, so I went with something local. My choice ended up being a veal cutlet that was deep-fried Milanese style. I’m sure the burger would’ve been good but this was amazing!

I had just left Morocco and it was time to explore Italy! I am very excited to be back and visit some cities that I haven’t been to yet. The plan for this trip was Milan, Venice and Bologna. The Park Hyatt Milan had a really nice coffee machine with a great selection of tea and coffee. They also even had basic office supplies in case you needed to get some serious paperwork done. Also the room came equipped with a nice seating are if you’re interested in lounging around.

The bathroom was on another level of beauty. Very nice Italian marble throughout. A huge bathtub accompanied by a shower and two separate sinks. Of course there are plenty of mirrors to check yourself out and make sure that you look sharp.

A key feature to this Park Hyatt hotel would have to be the gym and locker room facilities. In the men’s locker room, there was two very impressive features to take note of. The first and my favorite would have to be the steam room. The steam was constantly running and the temperature was just right. Pierre likes it hot and sweaty, so he spent a lot of time there during his stay. The other feature of the locker room that he really liked was the shower. There was only one shower but it was a shower of epic proportions. It had many different settings so you could get sprayed from every direction imaginable.

After exploring Milan for the evening, it was time to get some sleep and get up for breakfast at the hotel. The breakfast takes place in the main lobby and I must say I really like the design. There is a ceiling of windows in which you can look out to see the beautiful architecture of the building. They offer both à la carte and buffet breakfast options. Being a boss that Pierre is, he went for both.

The buffet was very outstanding. The fruit was so fresh and ripe, it was perfect. They also had a magnificent selection of cheese and meat which I would expect in Italy. The whole process of ordering on the other hand left a little bit more to be desired. The first day the food took a little bit too long to arrive but the second day it was faster. Perhaps, the first morning was just an off day. Let’s hope. Overall, I did enjoy the food. Connected to the lobby is the Mio bar which I decided to have a dinner at during the second night. You’ll be able to read about it in a separate article.

Going back down to the spa area we can talk about the gym. It was very extensive and offered exactly what Pierre needed to stay fit and ripped. Seriously, I must say that I really enjoyed the gym. In the common area of the spa they offered a hot tub if you really want to loosen up those joints!

This hotel is truly a masterpiece. I love the styling in the rooms and common areas of the hotel. The spa and workout facilities were also on point. The only room for improvement would be to speed up the service during the breakfast. All in all, I would recommend for you to stay at the Park Hyatt in Milan the next time you visit!

Cafe M Review (Casablanca, Morocco)

17 Apr 2016

Proper send offs are a major key to a great life. Luckily my last meal in Casablanca was at the Hyatt Regency’s Cafe M. It’s a French restaurant located on the ground floor.

Firstly I want to say that I really enjoyed the styling of the Cafe M. Very sleek and also had a professional vibe. Pierre likes. We started with some bread and butter. Extra tasty but probably due to the fact that I hadn’t eaten in about 7 hours. Chuckles.

Anyways, we had a chance to speak with our waiter, who was very professional. He actually recommended a Moroccan wine that I’ve already had at the hotel’s Moroccan restaurant. It’s called Eclipse and I went with it again because I enjoyed it so much the first time! To get the meal started, we went for the tuna tartare. This tuna tartare we exceptionally good. I’m a salt fanatic so I may have added a touch for a stronger bite. Pro tip: make sure you eat the tuna tartare with bread. Magical.

I was in the mood for meat that night so I went with a giant steak. Lord have mercy! It was perfectly cooked! I’m not sure if it’s all the French in my blood, but every time I eat at a French restaurant, I really enjoy myself. This was no exception to the rule!

We also went with a mushroom risotto. Risotto is probably one of my most favorite foods. The taste was great and it was super creamy. It could have been cooked just a touch longer but was still great! A few glasses of wine into the meal and I was feeling pretty swell. I tried to stop eating the steak several times because it was so big, but I couldn’t help myself! I practically finished it! Feeling stuffed but very satisfied.

For dessert we went with something that I had never tried before. It was basically the French version of apple pie, it’s called clafouti. It was great! Super tasty when you combine with the ice cream!

Overall, this meal was completely on point! It was super busy that night, but we still had great service! The atmosphere was lovely and the food was perfect. Probably the best send off that I could’ve had! If you’re in Casablanca and want some great French cuisine, then I would highly recommend you visit Cafe M in the Hyatt Regency hotel!
